As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties

Duties include but are not limited to the following:
• Under general supervision: patrol designated areas in, by foot, by bicycle, or other means to preserve law and order;
• Direct traffic;
• Enforce parking regulations, issue citations that are in violation of codes;
• Observe, monitor, and control routine and unusual traffic conditions; assist and advise motorists; issue parking  citations and warnings;
• Discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce laws and ordinances; 
• Maintain awareness of and remain alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; 
• Conduct investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or incidents observed to determine what, if any, crime has been committed;
• Respond to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents;
• Investigate complaints and take appropriate action, which may include the use of deadly or non-deadly force;
• Use sound judgment under adverse, stressful conditions;
• Identify, collect, preserve, process, and book evidence;
• Locate and interview victims and witnesses;
• Work in partnership with the Santa Clara Police Department and the District Attorney's Office to follow through on criminal complaints;
• Apprehend and arrest offenders for crimes committed under federal, state, and local laws and codes;
• Control and mitigate people under the influence of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations;
• Establish and preserve good relationships with the general public;
• Answer questions from the public concerning local and state laws, procedures, and activities of the department, apply good public relation principals;
• Participate in continuous training required by POST  to enhance law enforcement skills 
• Attend meetings and trainings;
• Prepare a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, and unusual incidents observed; prepare investigative reports and case information;
• Testify in courts and at hearings; prepare and present case evidence;
• Escort prisoners to county jail, juvenile hall, or Santa Clara Police Department; and
• Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE  

• Currently employed as a Full Time or Part Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Currently working as a Level I Reserve Police Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or

• Retired as a Full Time Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency; or two years experience as a Peace Officer with a California Law Enforcement Agency and possession of a valid Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.  

LICENSES &/OR CERTIFICATES

• Possession of a valid driver's license is required; 

• Proof of a current Basic or higher certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) is required at the time of application and for the duration of employment  (Not required for Reserve Police Officers, see below);

• Must have passed Field Training Program with home agency as required by POST;

• Must have passed Probationary Period with home agency;

• The minimum Peace Officer selection standards are set forth in Government Code (GC) Sections 1029, 1031, and 1031.4.  Every California Peace Officer must be: Free from any disqualifications for employment, including felony convictions (GC 1029). Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law (GC 1031);

• and at least 21 yrs of age for specified peace officers (GC 1031.4).

• Must maintain current CPR and First Aid Certification.

Reserve Police Officers Must Also Provide: Proof of completion of Level 1 Reserve Peace Officer POST Regular Basic Course (Reserve Police Officers Only).

 

PHYSICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Must be at least 20 years of age at time of application filing and 21 years of age at time of job appointment;

• Must meet and maintain required peace officer employment standards as required by POST;

• Per the California Public Employee Retirement System (CalPERS) "Public Safety Retirees on service retirement may not work more than 960 hours in a fiscal year for all CalPERS employers:;

• Retirees who were medically retired (industrial or non-industrial) should confirm with their retirement plan that accepting employment as a Per Diem Police Officer will not jeopardize their pension;

• Must possess the strength and physical ability necessary to perform the essential functions of the position;

• Must possess hearing, speech, and mental capabilities sufficient to perform all of the essential functions of the position; and

• Must be willing to be fingerprinted and pass a departmental interview, psychological, medical, and background investigation prior to appointment.

 

Vision requirements:  

• Must possess vision including color, night, depth, and peripheral vision sufficient to perform all of the essential functions of the position; and

• Must possess visual acuity of not less than 20/80 vision in each eye uncorrected, and corrected to 20/30 in each eye.

 

EXCEPTION:  Applicants with correction afforded by soft contact lenses are exempt from the minimum uncorrected vision standard of 20/80, provided their corrected vision is 20/30 in each eye.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Environment: 

The employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hostile environments; extensive public contact. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but may be very loud due to crowd noise, music, sirens, firearm training, etc. Incumbents are required to work various shifts, including evenings and weekends, and may be required to travel to attend meetings or court appearances.

 

Physical: 

Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting; restrain or subdue individuals; walk, stand, sit, bike or run for prolonged periods of time;

occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; occasionally climb and balance; regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and/or move moderate to heavy weights; occasionally lift and/or move heavy weights; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers;

 

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

• Will be required to work special events.

• Will be required to work odd and unusual hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays.

• Will be required to provide safety equipment (defined as ballistic vest, duty belt, and firearm) approved by the Santa Clara Police Department.

The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the City which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill. The Mechanical Maintenance Position is in the Facilities Division of the Public Works Department.

The Position: 

The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is a journey level technical classification. This classification operates, lubricates, cleans, adjusts, and makes repairs to heating, ventilating, refrigeration, emergency generators, solar systems, and other stationary building equipment, and installs and troubleshoots electrical systems up to 480 volts. The Mechanical Maintenance Worker is distinguished from the Mechanical Maintenance Foreman/Forewoman in that the latter is a supervisory position responsible for supervising Mechanical Maintenance Workers and Utility Workers in the maintenance and repair of the mechanical equipment found in City buildings.

Minimum Experience Requirements: 

Two (2) years of experience in the maintenance, operation, installation and troubleshooting of diesel and gas engines, centralized heating, ventilation, emergency generators and air conditioning units, related mechanical equipment and electrical systems (up to 480 volts) found in heavy duty machinery or large buildings, such as manufacturing plants, office buildings, or public buildings.

License/Certifications: 

• Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.
• California State issued Forklift Certification by the end of the probationary period.
• HVAC/Refrigerant certification required at time of appointment and for the duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

Experience with building management systems, such as Direct Digital Control (DDC), Variable Air Volume (VAV), and other related electrical control systems is desirable.

Overview:

Are you an experienced Vegetation Maintenance professional with five or more years of experience and a valid Class A driver’s license? If so, we encourage you to consider this opportunity with Valley Water.

Maintenance Worker III is an advanced journey-level position responsible for operating a variety of light construction equipment in support of Valley Water’s maintenance and construction projects. This role provides agency-wide support for work on creeks, ponds, reservoirs, and other flood control facilities throughout the county.

Assigned to the Vegetation Field Operations Unit, this position performs a broad range of duties supporting Valley Water’s vegetation management programs. Responsibilities include vegetation control, integrated vegetation management, arboriculture, native plant revegetation, invasive plant management, and biotechnical erosion control on Valley Water properties.

This is primarily an outdoor position requiring work in varying and sometimes challenging environmental conditions, including heat, cold, and rain. Incumbents may also be required to respond to after-hours flood control emergencies, including nighttime callouts.

As a light equipment operator, the Maintenance Worker III must possess a valid Class A driver’s license to operate Valley Water commercial vehicles and to transport light equipment used in vegetation management and flood control projects. Daily equipment operation may include a compactor, water truck, tree truck and chipper, dump truck, and wheel loader. Equipment is used to haul vegetative debris, maintain native plant mitigation sites, support invasive plant management efforts, and assist with Valley Water’s sandbag operations.

This position also ultimately requires a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate (QAC) in Category C (Right-of-Way) and Category F (Aquatics) to mix and apply herbicides and calibrate spray equipment for vegetation control on Valley Water managed properties.

• Prepare soil and install native plant revegetation per established plans; maintain mitigation areas to achieve success criteria and meet monitoring requirements. 
• Install, adjust, and repair irrigation systems, including heads, lines, and controllers.
• Operate a variety of small power tools and light equipment, including spray equipment, mowers, chain saws, weed eaters, pole saw, hydro seeder, small trenchers, loader, compactors, water trucks, forklift, straw mulcher, auger, sandbag machine, and chipper; clean, adjust, and perform minor maintenance on light equipment to ensure proper operating condition. 
• Mix and apply herbicides, and calibration of spray equipment to control the growth of vegetation on and around flood control and water distribution facilities and rights of way. 
• Build or remove browse cages or other devices to keep wildlife from damaging native plant revegetation sites. 
• Build phytosanitary benches, fences, irrigation, etc. in support of native plant holding facility. 
• Participate in Valley Water’s sandbag program as needed. 
• Perform calculations of required work materials; document daily application of chemical use; photo documentation of work, complete work order dailies, best management practices checklists, surveys, forms, and time data entries. Maintain paper and electronic records of work performed.

Ideal Training and Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. 

Must have a satisfactory driving record and possess a valid California Class A driver's license with tanker endorsement at the time of hire.

Possession of a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate or Qualified Applicator License in Category C issued by the State of California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation at the time of hire.

Possession of a Qualified Applicator’s Certificate or Qualified Applicator License in Category F issued by the State of California’s Department of Pesticide Regulation within 6 months of hire.  

This position requires the individual to be onsite and is typically not a teleworking position.

Overview:

Valley Water is seeking an experienced Information Systems Analyst III to lead the deployment, administration, and long-term governance of Valley Water's new Enterprise Electronic Document and Records Management System (EDRMS). This system represents the capstone of Valley Water’s Digital Transformation Strategy and will serve as the authoritative, enterprise-wide repository for all past, present, and future District documents and records.

This journey-level position plays a foundational role in establishing sustainable information governance practices across the organization. Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Lead the deployment, configuration, integration, and ongoing administration of Valley Water’s EDRMS platform.
• Oversee enterprise-wide data and document classification using AI-enabled tools with appropriate human validation to ensure compliance with Valley Water policies and regulatory obligations.
• Administer and enforce Board-approved records retention schedules across all document types and business units.

• Manage removal of data from enterprise systems and analytical/AI platforms once records are destroyed or no longer authorized for use.
• Provide technical leadership in application configuration, integration, database management, and system optimization.
• Develop system documentation, governance standards, and user training materials.
• Serve as project manager for complex system enhancements and cross-functional initiatives.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex application, database, and integration issues.
