Position Duties

 

The Department of Transportation is currently seeking to fill multiple vacancies for the Electrician Supervisor position. If you are interested in employment in these classifications, you should apply to ensure you are considered for additional opportunities that may utilize the applicants from this recruitment.

 

The Department of Transportation is currently recruiting to fill a vacant Electrician Traffic Maintenance Supervisor and a Electrician Streetlight Supervisor position in the Infrastructure Maintenance Division. These positions are responsible for leading one of our three areas in the Electrical projects section. The City of San Jose has 969 signalized intersections and over 65,000 streetlights and the supporting infrastructure assets. 

 

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with demonstrated ability in assimilating and implementing organizational development initiatives. A major priority for this position will be to identify and implement continuous improvement processes and technological advances to meet a customer-focused, results-driven service delivery demand. In addition, the ideal candidate keeps current on new advances in signal technology and implements planned upgrades with a focus on standardization and cost effectiveness.  

 

The Electrician Traffic Signals Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for:

 

• The electrician supervisor for Traffic signals supervises electricians and other maintenance staff 

• Responsible for the in-house on call program 24/7/365 involving electricians, maintenance staff as well as contractors.

• Ensures the work being performed Meets all CSJ standards as well as safety standards for traffic signals.

• Responsible for working with our partners in DOT including Signal Operations, Signal Design and our ITS team to replace, upgrade and modify existing intersections and bring new intersections online.

• Coordinates with other departments for other related work, communication systems, fiber network, speed radar signs, wireless communication systems and other related work to do with the city communication systems.

• Tracks budget and works with analysts to ensure accurate spending records are maintained as well as accurate tracking of contractor costs.

• Maintains the correct inventory of all needed equipment and supplies on hand to ensure all repairs throughout the city can be made in an efficient manner

• Maintains the required response time by staff for trouble calls that come in for signals not operating properly and all other associated trouble calls.

• Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment.

• The Position in this classification will rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned electrical operation/program area.

• Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services.

• Ensure all the performance measures and other reporting categories are maintained accurately and consistently.

 

The Electrician Streetlight Supervisor is responsible for:

 

• Supervises electricians and other maintenance staff in maintenance of over 65,000 streetlights and the supporting infrastructure assets.

• Ensures the work being produced meets CSJ mandated standards and specifications.

• Plans, schedules, and evaluates work performed by assigned staff.

• Tracks maintenance budgets and works with analysts to ensure accurate financial records are kept.

• Coordinates and implements work orders, as well as works with IT to implement updates to programs and applications.

• Incumbents regularly work on tasks that are varied and complex, requiring considerable discretion and independent judgment.

• Positions in this classification rely on experience and judgment to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the assigned electrical operation/program area.

• Assignments are given with general guidelines and incumbents are responsible for establishing objectives, timelines, and methods to deliver services.

• Responsible for ensuring all the performance measures and other reporting categories are maintained accurately and consistently.

• The incumbent must also be comfortable interacting with the general public to provide updates on service requests and update to senior staff.

• This position requires high constructive energy and excellent communication, to ensure that the requests are understood and there are solutions to solve the problem.

• Must be able to direct contractors for needed work for on call, stolen wire installing traffic signal poles as well as streetlighting poles involved in accidents.

• Maintains correct amount of inventory for all supplies related to streetlights.

Minimum Qualifications

 

Education: Completion of an approved apprenticeship program

 

Experience: 2 years of lead electrician experience as a journey level Electrician.

 

Acceptable Substitution: Documented proof of completion of 8,500 hours of both course work and experience in all of the areas covered in the State of California Electrician Apprenticeship Standards may be substituted for completion of a recognized Electrician Apprenticeship program. These areas include residential wiring, commercial and industrial wiring, intercom and signals, controls, underground work, trouble shooting, finishing and fixture hanging, solid state controls, and stock and inventory. Completion of the State of California Electrician Certification exam will be accepted as proof of completion of 8,500 hours of electrical work experience.

Certifications/Licenses: Possession of a valid State of California driver’s license.

 

 

Physical requirement

• Operate, inspect, and repair varied hand and power tools and construction equipment;

• Operate a motor vehicle and visit various City sites;

• Be exposed to unpredictable working conditions including but not limited to loud noise levels, cold and hot temperatures, inclement weather conditions, road hazards, vibration, confining workspace, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, hazardous physical substances, fumes, dust, and air contaminants.

About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern in the Information Systems and Technology (IST) Department. The GIS Intern will perform GIS mapping and analysis tasks in support of land acquisition, open space planning, capital improvement, and resource management activities. Responsibilities include creating maps for District Board reports and presentations; compiling and synthesizing geographic data; developing attribute data for feature classes; performing basic geoprocessing; maintaining and updating GIS databases as new data are collected; preparing, modifying and updating District site maps and brochures; providing graphic support for other departments including the development of maps, charts, displays, presentations, graphics, brochures, and drawings; and collecting field data. Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field. Successful candidates will have a background in geography, planning, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or another related field; demonstrated experience with ArcGIS software; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in cartography and map production. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication and critical thinking skills, the ability to work well both in a team setting and independently, the desire to learn, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings. Knowledge of web GIS and experience with field data collection are a plus. Working Conditions/Schedule: This position is based primarily in-office at our Administrative Office in Los Altos, CA, as part of the IST department. While the majority of work will be performed in an office setting, there may be occasional instances of field data collection. These field activities are infrequent but may involve travel in a district vehicle and, at times, working independently in varied outdoor conditions, including remote and rugged terrain with numerous biotic and abiotic hazards during inclement weather. This is a temporary position working 24 – 32 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 7-to-9-month period. Way, Power & Signal Maintenance is responsible for timely and reliable maintenance, preventive maintenance, inspections, repair and servicing of the light rail right-of-way, rail system power, tracks, signals, station facilities and related equipment. Components of the Way, Power & Signal unit are:

• Station & Wayside Maintenance: Station & Wayside Maintenance maintains and repairs (including graffiti removal) light rail stations, terminal buildings, restrooms, park & ride lots, landscaping, fences, guardrails, and other trackside areas.

• Track Maintenance: Track Maintenance maintains (including right-of-way weed eradication, vegetation control, and graffiti removal), performs preventive maintenance, inspects, services and repairs rail, switches, ties, roadbed, and track systems.

 Minimum Qualifications:Employment Standards
Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and the ability to qualify for and maintain a Class A license.

Training and experience equivalent to a high school diploma and five (5) years of experience in electrical inspections, maintenance, and repair, preferably on high voltage substations. The completion of a recognized apprenticeship program for electricians or equivalent can be included as part of the required years of experience.

Must be available to work weekends, holidays, odd and unusual hours.

• In accordance with Department of Transportation (DOT) requirements, all job applicants selected for appointment to this safety-sensitive position are subject to pre-employment drug testing. A final job applicant will be tested for five prohibited drugs (and their metabolites): Cocaine, PCP, Amphetamines, Marijuana, and Opiates. Services include: bench installation, painting and repair, core drilling for poles at new bus stops, garbage collection, trash receptacle installation and relocation, graffiti abatement, litter removal, pressure washing, red curb painting, signage inspection, route updates, and sweeping services. Typical Tasks

• Inspects, maintains, and repairs rail signaling and safety systems, including approach circuitry, transponders, switch controls, relays, preemptor controls and crossing gates; designs, constructs, and installs temporary interlocks and turnbacks;
• Monitors, maintains, modifies, installs, troubleshoots, repairs, and supports the light rail SCADA system hardware, software and LAN network devices; creates displays and alarms; uses diagnostic tools to identify and resolve network problems;
• Inspects, maintains, repairs, and administers Ticket Vending Machine master controllers, LAN, and network devices;
• Inspects, maintains, and repairs communication systems, including telephone equipment and switches, visual message boards, paging and speaker systems, and other related equipment;
• Maintains electrical equipment and systems, including mobility-impaired lifts, station lighting and electrical systems, and backup generator systems;
• Drives trucks and other vehicles; Uses and maintains tools and equipment in good working condition;
• Prepares and maintains reports and records of work performed;
• Reviews construction plans and specifications, and performs electrical inspections of new construction projects;
• Performs routine electrical construction duties using hand and power tools;
• Performs limited maintenance on light rail station elevators and escalators;
• May provide lead work direction and training to other employees.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Employment Standards
Development of the required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through completion of a two year program at a recognized academic, trade or vocational school or completion of an apprenticeship in the trade; and three years of journey-level experience in the inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electrical, electronic and communications systems.

• Theories, practices, methods, techniques, tools and equipment used in the installation, testing, calibration, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic, supervisory control and communications systems, and devices applicable to a light rail system;

Position Duties:

The Department is recruiting for part-time, unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Lifeguard classification is covered by the Minimum Wage Police and pay starts at $17.95 hourly.

The Instructor Lifeguard classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $29.45 hourly.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 16, 2025 - August 8, 2025. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 9, 2025 - June 13, 2025, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. 

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will offer Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification age requirement is at least 15 years old and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement is at least 16 years old. 

If selected to move forward in the conditional offer process, the Lifeguard certification pre course swimming skills test that consists of the following:

• a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
• a 2-minute tread using legs only
• the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, to the surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. 

Lifeguard:  Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary, according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower-level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard. 

Instructor Lifeguard:  In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT DIRECTOR

Under the direction of the Town Manager, the Community Development
Director plans, organizes, directs, and manages all activities and operations of the Community Development Department, including planning, building, code enforcement, economic development, and related functions.

Typical Tasks
 

• Leads and participates in the work of staff in managing projects, developing and enhancing system applications for an assigned division;
• Establishes and maintains positive relationships, and works extensively with VTA Management, VTA Business Process Owners, and system Super Users in developing and  enhancing information systems solutions;
• Trains customers, staff, and others as needed in a formal setting, in a group, or one-on-one;
• Administers a variety of actions to one or more modules of the Enterprise Resource Planning system (SAP), or Electronic Documents Management System (EDMS), or construction applications (such as Contract Manager, P6, Projectwise, Citicube, etc.) or other VTA applications or Reporting Services;

Minimum Qualifications

 

Employment Standards

Sufficient training, education and experience to demonstrate possession of the required technical and project management knowledge, skills and abilities.

Development of the required knowledge, skills and abilities is typically obtained through a combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with a four-year degree in information systems, computer science or related field and four (4) years of responsible experience developing, designing, and/or maintaining major components of a comprehensive information system including evaluation, analysis and input to the software modules of an Enterprise Resource Planning System or other application system. (Additional applicable experience with applications and systems support, design, and maintenance substitutes for college on a year for year basis.) Incumbents must demonstrate substantial experience in an SAP environment, and/or Electronic Documents Management System, and/or Operations system (such as Trapeze, BDT, ACS) or Construction and CMP solutions.

A VTA employee designated as a "Business Process Owner" and/or "Super User" with four (4) years of experience in that capacity, in addition to performing and leading others in system upgrades and demonstrated technical coursework in SAP or systems used at VTA, meets the minimum qualifications for this classification. Experience with transit/transportation-related applications is desirable.
