LIFEGUARD I ($16.54 hourly)

SUMMARY

Under immediate supervision, monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; learns, explains, and enforces safe swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; and performs related work as required.  Lifeguards may be asked to perform office or front desk duties in the aquatic office only.  

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives immediate supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry-level classification in the Lifeguard series.  Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn to perform essential lifeguard duties.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied; close supervision and frequent review of work is reduced as an incumbent demonstrates the skills necessary to perform the work independently. 

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Provides aquatics safety and supervision for patrons; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of District aquatic facilities to prevent accidents, and to ensure the safety and well-being of patrons.
2. Implements and monitors District policies and procedures; enforces aquatics regulations; cautions patrons regarding unsafe activities.
3. Performs all required lifeguard-training skills as needed.
4. Assists and aids in swim lesson programs under the direction of assigned Swim Instructor.
5. Provides high quality customer service in a safe and timely manner.
6. Inspects and maintains swimming and pool equipment for functionality, ensures proper placement and availability in the pool area, and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.
7. Maintains pool and restroom areas in a safe and clean condition.
8. Maintains logs and records of activities.
9. Participates in required training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures.
10. Assists with District special events as needed.
11. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience:

• Prior experience participating in aquatics programs or performing lifeguard duties is desirable.

 

Knowledge of:

• Principles and techniques of lifeguarding, including lifesaving methods and procedures.
• Operational characteristics of water rescue safety equipment and devices.
• Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service.
• Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and applications.

 

Ability to:

• Learn and understand the organization and operation of the District’s aquatics facilities.
• Learn, monitor, and enforce District regulations, policies, and procedures.
• React to and handle swimmer rescue and medical emergencies in a safe and effective manner.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed within a public swimming pool environment, where stamina is needed to perform moderate to heavy lifting of pool equipment and furniture or children and adults who may require removal from the pool, and to stay in the pool for prolonged periods.  Must possess the mobility to stand, stoop, kneel, reach, bend, climb, push and pull materials and equipment, and swim while wearing an appropriate uniform with protective equipment.  Vision and hearing must be sufficient to see and hear adults and children in crowded and noisy conditions and/or situations.  Must also possess:  the mobility to work in an office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person or by using a telephone and radio.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or to operate safety equipment.  Must possess the ability to swim distances and dive to pool depths, as determined by testing/certification authorities, and to lift 150 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

 

ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS

Incumbents work outdoors in a pool environment with wet and slippery conditions, and are exposed to variable weather conditions; may be exposed to chlorine, acids, and other chemicals at aquatics facilities, as well as blood and body fluids while rendering first aid and CPR.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.

LIFEGUARD II ($19.20 hourly)
 

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, opens, closes, and secures the pool facility; monitors activities in the water, pool decks, and ancillary areas of aquatics facilities to ensure the safety of patrons; explains and enforces swimming programs and pool policies, regulations, and rules.  Performs rescues and administers first aid, CPR, and AED as needed; prepares facilities and sets up equipment for special activities and events; and performs related work as required.

 

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises no supervision over staff.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Lifeguard series responsible for performing the full range of lifeguard duties, including patron safety and opening/closing an assigned pool facility.  Incumbents at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the aquatics operating procedures and policies.  This classification is distinguished from the Aquatics Lead in that the latter is an advanced journey-level classification which provides technical and functional direction over assigned lifeguard staff.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

5. Performs all required lifeguard-training skills as needed.
6. Assists and aids in swim lesson programs under the direction of assigned Swim Instructor.

Under general supervision, lead, perform lifeguard duties in enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct; perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. To provide instruction in all levels of American Red Cross swimming certification and other aquatics programs.

 

The City of Union City's Community and Recreation Services is seeking staff for the following roles:

• Lifeguard (Recreation Leader) - $17.14 - $20.84/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, Senior Lifeguard or Pool Manager, the Lifeguard performs swim instructor duties in teaching swimming and water safety courses, enforcing City public swimming pool rules and monitoring pool patron conduct.  Lifeguards must have knowledge and be physically able to perform emergency rescue and lifesaving techniques. Must be able to provide instruction in all levels of American Red Cross swimming certification and other aquatics programs.

 

• Senior Lifeguard (Senior Recreation Leader) - $18.24 - $22.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision from the Recreation Coordinator or Pool Manager, must be able to perform all duties as a Lifeguard and know operational rules and protocols of Dan Oden Swim Complex. Must have basic customer service practices and knowledge of all current safety standards and information related to aquatics. Must assist in teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding.

 

• Pool Manager (CRS Program Manager) - $19.93 -$24.22/hourly
  • Under general supervision of the Recreation Coordinator, able to perform all duties and responsibilities of a Lifeguard and Senior Lifeguard, assist in staff meetings and lifeguard trainings, direct contact for participants to explain pool rules, policies, and procedures. Pool Manager assists in implementing and scheduling staff, program, and services.

This is the entry-level classification in the Recreation Leader series responsible for providing operational assistance and support to an assigned program area.  Positions at this level are not expected to function with the same amount of knowledge or skill level as positions allocated to the Recreation Leader II level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.  Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern.  Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.  As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.  This classification is distinguished from the Recreation Leader II in that the latter classification is responsible for performing the full range of duties with respect to providing recreation programs, activities, and classes and providing instruction to participants within an assigned program.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• High School Diploma or GED is desirable.
• No prior experience is required.

SUMMARY

Under general supervision, performs support work related to recreational programs, events, and activities; provides instruction and conducts classes/activities for program participants under the guidance and direction of higher-level staff; prepares buildings, fields, and facilities for scheduled activities or events; and provides routine administrative support. May assist with the development, promotion, and implementation of programs which meet the needs of a diverse community; ensures program facilities are properly maintained; and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from higher-level supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff. Exercises direction over lower-level staff and volunteers. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS This is the advanced journey-level and lead class in the Recreation Leader series responsible for leading and directing the activities of subordinate staff within an assigned program area, but may also be assigned to perform difficult and complex support work within a program area. Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative. This classification is distinguished from Recreation Coordinator in that the latter is responsible for all operational activities within an assigned program area, including serving in an ongoing lead capacity over program staff.

• High School Diploma or GED is required; some college level coursework is desired;

• Two years of relevant part-time recreation program experience, or related work experience.

• Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work in the maintenance and repair of beach facilities, including dumping trash cans, picking up debris along waterline, cleaning rest rooms, driving 4-wheel drive trucks on beach, performing minor plumbing and building maintenance, removing graffiti, painting, hand-picking litter and other related duties as assigned.

The Community Outreach team is seeking a summer intern for a 10–12-week assignment.  The goal of the internship is to gain valuable experience managing high school aged volunteers that will support a variety of summer camps and programs throughout the district.

• Be primary point of contact for Summer Youth Volunteers. 

• Assist with volunteer orientation and ongoing training sessions throughout the summer. 

• Oversee volunteer schedule. 

• Track volunteer hours logging. 

• Create program completion documents. 

• Assist with planning end of summer recognition event. 

 

Key deliverables will be: 

• Maintain volunteer hour tracking and create end of summer recap report. 

• Complete summer training and check-in reports. 

• Create and distribute volunteer completion certification with hours totals for all summer volunteers.

The Community Services team is seeking a summer intern for a 7-10-week assignment.  The goal of the internship is to allow a student to gain hands-on experience working alongside experienced youth development and recreation staff and assisting in promoting a safe, healthy environment within the camp setting by providing emotional support to the participants. 

 

Key duties

• Provides guidance, support, and assistance to staff throughout the week, which includes managing camper behavior issues, stress, and personal care needs
• Process critical incidents with supervisory staff.
• Participate in the intern group project.
• Provide support and be a role model to all participants.

 

Key deliverables will be:

• A training plan for camp staff to better understand best practices in working with children with special needs.
• Protocols to be followed when a situation arises with a child and what steps to take

• Unlock and lock buildings for renters and programs.
• Be present and assist renters during events.
• Set up and breakdown tables and chairs for rentals and program classes.
