Performs a variety of unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance work, and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance and replacement of Town water, sewer, street and storm drainage facilities and systems.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Typical duties include but are not limited to:
•    Perform required labor involved in construction and maintenance projects as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling.
•    Perform routine cleaning, inspection and preventive maintenance of equipment and refers defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
•    Performs all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards.
•    Maintains Corporation Yard and other Town facilities.
•    Responds to residents' requests for service.
•    Maintains a variety of records relating to maintenance activity.
•    Assists in determining the locations of water, storm drain and sewer lines from the appropriate sources prior to excavation.
•    Drives trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading of equipment and supplies.
•    Work in adverse weather conditions.

Possible 40 or more hours per week (Subject to change) up to total 960 hours of temporary employment.

FACILITY REPAIR WORKER II/III

Level II:  $6,052 - $7,356 per month

Level III:  $6,513 - $7,916

THE DEPARTMENT AND POSITION

The Department of Public Works is recruiting for a Facilities Repair Worker I/II/III to perform carpentry, plumbing, interior remodeling, painting, and a variety of other work in the maintenance and repair of City buildings, structures, and facilities.

• Performs framing, rough and finish carpentry to erect small structures, partition interior spaces, frame and trim doors and windows, apply siding, build roofs, build stairs, build indoor and outdoor benches, tables, signs, decks, fences, gates, and related items.
• Builds interior cabinetry such as counters, cupboards, and shelves.
• Operates power nail drivers, drills, saws, drill presses, joiners, and related hand and power carpentry tools to make and install custom pieces.
• Installs, repairs, and maintains domestic water supply, drainage plumbing and related fixtures using copper, galvanized and PVC pipe techniques.
• Hangs, tapes, and textures interior wallboard, patch plaster, and apply paneling to finished interiors.
• Masks, sandblasts, brushes and chemically prepares surfaces for painting.
• Operates spray equipment and uses manual tools to paint interior and exterior surfaces, equipment and facilities.
• Repairs metal equipment, recreational fixtures and furniture; fabricates frames and racks using acetylene and arc welding and brazing equipment.
• Prepares forms, sets rebar, pours and finishes concrete to repair or construct equipment and small building slabs, foundations, retaining walls, patios, repairs brick and masonry.
• Installs and repairs shake, asphalt shingle, and tar seal roofing.
• Removes and replaces window glass.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Facility Repair Worker II:

• Equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Three years of responsible experience in building repair and maintenance with at least one year of experience in one of the trades.

Facility Repair Worker III:

• Equivalent to graduation from high school.
• Five years of responsible experience in building repair and maintenance equivalent to the Facility Repair Worker II classification at the City of San Rafael.
• Knowledge of building codes and necessary permits related to building maintenance tasks.
• Possess strong computer skills with programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel and Office.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.

Maintenance Worker III: This is the senior level class in the maintenance series. This position maintains, repairs, inspects, plans, modifies, designs, installs and calibrates instrumentation, electrical, and SCADA control systems for wastewater treatment facilities; maintains a spare parts inventory; and trains operations staff in the understanding of instrumentation and control systems related to the process operation.

The Public Works Maintenance Superintendent (Streets) is a management-level role within the Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment, street and sidewalk repairs, street drainage system maintenance, and graffiti abatement.

Key duties for this role include:

• Overseeing the operation of construction and maintenance equipment.

• Managing street and sidewalk repairs.

• Maintaining street drainage systems.

• Leading graffiti abatement efforts.

THE POSITION

The City is currently seeking General Maintenance Workers. This temporary position works with the City’s maintenance staff to perform: unskilled labor in the parks and landscape medians, street and sidewalk maintenance, street sign maintenance, and fleet building maintenance. Duties include, but are not limited to: raking, emptying trash cans and litter removal, irrigation repair, weeding, edging, street sign maintenance and graffiti removal. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. 

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES

• Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in landscaping, street and sidewalk maintenance, and building maintenance, as well as safety practices and precautions to be used in work.
• Skill in operating hand and power tool equipment such as rakes, pick and shovel, etc.
• Ability to work outdoors in all weather and to follow oral and written instructions. Intermittently, sit while studying or listening to training; bend, squat, climb, kneel and twist when performing maintenance, repair, or installation tasks; perform simple and power grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation; and lift or carry heavy weights up to 90 lbs.; work in conditions of various outdoor exposure.
• Capable of working independently.

• Driving a city truck is required for the position and the applicant must have an acceptable driving record, subject to California DMV pull records.
• Ability to work Saturday and/or Sunday shifts.  Hours are 7AM-4:30PM and may fluctuate due to operational needs.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III

($25.51- $32.66 per hour)

PURPOSE: Under general supervision, assists in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant on an assigned shift.  Performs related responsibilities as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

In addition to being a full, advanced journey-level position, incumbents are expected to provide lead supervision over wastewater treatment plant maintenance staff.  Employees assigned to this class coordinate and perform the full range of skilled duties to operate, maintain, repair and modify the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the wastewater collection system.  

This position reports to the Utility Systems Supervisor and assists in determining equipment, personnel and material needs.  This position may act as the WWTP Supervisor (or as the Utility Systems Supervisor, if qualified) during periods when the appointed Utility Systems Supervisor is on vacation or absent from work for other reasons.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists in the operation of valves and other related controls to distribute flow through unit process and application of chlorine and chemicals to the wastewater.

2. Monitors control equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, blowers, sludge collectors, heat exchangers, sludge thickeners and other related process equipment.

3. Reads meters, gauges and other instrumentation.

4. Maintains a daily record of facility operation, samples collected and corrections to unit processes.

5. Adjusts or alters chemical treatment of the plant as necessary.

6. Collects samples for observation and analysis from unit processes.

7. Performs daily and weekly laboratory analysis as needed for process adjustments and performance indicators.

8. Performs preventative maintenance to equipment, such as routine service, lubrication and cleaning of process equipment and machinery.

9. Operated a wide variety of tools and equipment used in minor mechanical repair and operation of process equipment.

10. Assists in minor repairs to all process equipment as needed.

11. Performs building and ground maintenance, which may involve weed control, gardening and janitorial services.

12. Performs related duties as required.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I

($22.13– 28.33 per hour)

The City of Chowchilla is seeking a Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I for the operation and maintenance of the City’s Wastewater Treatment Plant. The Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator I is a journey-level class in the Wastewater Treatment Plant series, which normally works under general supervision, performing a group of related duties according to established procedures.  This position reports to the Utility Systems or Wastewater System Supervisor and does not supervise.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Leads and performs tasks related to the maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, plumbing, electrical, and exercise and lubricate machinery within the plant; records and maintains accurate maintenance records in a daily logbook;
• Orders supplies and materials; orders inventory of frequently used parts, oil, and filters for equipment used in the plant;
• Completes monthly work orders and enters information regarding maintenance tasks into the system; records SCADA; records hours on equipment and meters; makes entries into the end of the month report and prints work order summary;
• Generates new maintenance work orders for each month; prioritizes tasks to be performed on Water Pollution Control Plant equipment;
• Leads and performs cleanup of the plant, removing trash, washing down decks, and clearing leaves and branches from storm drains; cleans tools and makes sure equipment is in proper locations and power tools are in safe working condition;
• Changes oil and filters on various pumps and compressors in the plant; maintains safety inspections of fire extinguishers, eye wash stations, and ladders in the plant;
• Removes and replaces packing from various pumps in the plant; installs new rings of packing with new lantern rings if damaged; applies grease to the new set of packing for proper lubrication; removes corrosion or debris from packing gland before reinstalling;
• Evaluates pump performance and flow rate to determine if pump has excessive buildup of rags that is affecting its performance and efficiency; shuts down pumps to remove rags from impeller and clears any obstructions;
• Replaces damaged parts/fittings on leaking chemical feed pumps; makes alterations to existing supply tubing or fittings, replacing clamps or O-rings, or removing  debris caught in the check valves; inspects, tests, calibrates, adjusts, cleans, and paints equipment in the water pollution control  plant; and
• Performs related duties as assigned.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: Principles, practices, and techniques of the installation, maintenance, and repair of water treatment plan systems; operation of various hand and power tools; proper procedures to safely perform maintenance on machinery and equipment in the plant;  principles and techniques of lead direction, work coordination, and training; maintenance for MP2 program; recording and updating repair history on water pollution control plant equipment; how to create new work orders and close out completed work orders; forklift operations and scissor lift; replacing, repairing, and installing piping, fittings, and valves on water pollution control equipment; data entry of important, vital information regarding maintenance repairs; performance and evaluation on future preventative maintenance in the WPCP MP2 program; proper protective equipment.

Ability to: Drive and operate vehicles and equipment safely; keep inventory, order, and stock  necessary parts and supplies for the maintenance shop; provide effective lead direction, work coordination, and training; ensures safe work practices are observed; establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of the work; adhere to prescribed policies, procedures, routines, and practices; carry out assignments with minimal instructions; read and understand written instructions, maps, equipment operation manuals, and other written documents associated with the work; effectively schedule work; effectively keep written records. 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED). Technical training in a water treatment plant system or related field is desirable. 

Experience: Four (4) year of full-time experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of pollution control plant and sewage pumping facilities with at least one (1) year of equivalent experience to a Treatment Plant Maintenance Worker II.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. CWEA Certification as a Grade II Mechanical Technologist. Grade II Electrical/Instrumentation Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Respond to work at any hour of the day or night, within designated timeframe, as required during afterhours, weekend service, and/or emergency situations; carry communication equipment in order to respond after work hours.  Vision, hearing, and physical ability adequate to obtain and maintain a California Class B Driver’s License; speak clearly and understandably. Requires moderate and sometimes strenuous exertion including bending, stooping, crouching, crawling, climbing, lifting, twisting, digging, carrying, and/or handling material weighing up to one hundred (100) pounds.  Work in confined spaces and wear protective equipment. May work in conditions that require exposure to noise, odors, chemical and biological agents, gases, and contact with sanitary wastewater; work at heights up to 20 feet; work in varying temperatures of cold and heat, and in inclement weather for extended periods of time; work in conditions that may contain dust, mold, and various chemicals. 

The City of Menlo Park is seeking applicants for temporary positions in the Public Works Maintenance Division.  Depending on their experience, individuals may be assigned to work in Trees, Streets, Facilities, Parks, or Water.  Temporary employees will operate and maintain a variety of maintenance equipment, including dump trucks, stump grinders, brush chippers, aerial lifts, forklifts, lawn mowers, backpack blowers, backhoes, jack hammers, lawn edger’s, hedge trimmers, concrete saws, chain saws and hand tools.  Temporary employees will foster positive and effective working relationships and must be able understand and follow instructions.
