The Newark Recreation and Community Services Department is looking for Pool Service Technician for our fantastic swim lesson and aquatic programs, to work at the Silliman Activity & Family Aquatic Center. We are looking for someone to perform a wide variety of duties related to maintaining the City’s Aquatics facilities, pools, water slides and property. Swimming experience is desired. Those that are successful in the application review will be invited to attend an interview either in person, or via ZOOM. Please note that this position requires you to work in an indoor aquatic environment subject to warm/humid temperatures.

• Applicants should be able to work at least 12-20 hours per week, year-round, including weekends and holidays, with mandatory trainings. 
• Please note that shift preference is not guaranteed and is based on the program's staffing needs and can change at any time. Please keep this in mind when/if you plan to attend school.

THE POSITION:

To be responsible for the care, maintenance, and cleaning of assigned buildings and related facilities; and to do related work as required. Closing and cleaning restrooms in the evenings.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required

knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities

would be:

• Six months of experience in janitorial work is desired.
• Equivalent to completion of the eighth grade.
• Successfully pass required background checks.

DUTIES:

Knowledge of:

Methods, materials, and equipment used in custodial work.

Safe work practices.

Ability to:

Clean and care for assigned areas and equipment.

Use a variety of custodial equipment and materials.

Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Work independently in the absence of supervision.

Work a schedule of evenings and/or weekends

The City of San Mateo Parks and Recreation Department is looking responsible, enthusiastic,

and energetic individuals to join our Aquatics Section!

Qualifications:

Must be at least 15 years old and have the ability to obtain a work permit, if under the age of 18.  Applicants must have completed and passed the Lifeguard Training class that includes CPR, FPR, and AED by June 1, 2024. WSI (water safety instructor) is highly recommended.

Lifeguard Job Responsibilities:

• The primary responsibility of a lifeguard is to protect lives by using their skills to prevent injury among patrons.  This duty does not only include rescuing drowning victims or administering CPR and first aid.  Being alert and proactive also helps to prevent dangerous situations from ever occurring in the first place.
• Enforcing the rules fairly and consistently is a close second major duty and could even be considered to be a part of patron surveillance.  Help the patrons to keep themselves safe by monitoring and putting an end to dangerous behaviors. 
• Maintenance and cleaning tasks are also part of the lifeguard’s duties.  These can include monitoring chemical levels in the pool, picking up trash and organizing equipment, or inspecting the facility for unsafe conditions.

Swim Instructor Job Responsibilities:

• The swim instructor is responsible for instructing swim lesson participants in a variety of swim levels.
• This position is also responsible for the safety of the participants in their own class.
• Work hours as scheduled which includes beginning and ending class on time; remaining after class to answer participant and/or parent questions as needed and clean up supplies.
• Instructs and evaluates students participating in swim lessons.
• Submits completed report cards, skills sheets, and attendance information on time.

What You’ll Do

• Receive on-the-job training, learn, and perform work in the following police records functions:
• Meet and assist the public at the Police Department reception counter and provide information according to City policy and Government Code requirements.
• Answer non-emergency heavy volume, incoming telephone calls.
• Operate machines and technology including but not limited to a computer, facsimile, copier/scanner/printer, calculator, desk-top computer, and a telecommunication terminal accessing County, State and National law enforcement automated information systems.
• Type, process, scan, and file a wide variety of police reports, warrants, subpoenas, citations, registrant files and court ordered record sealings utilizing various types of technology.
• Verify computer entries, process validations and assist with state and federal audits.
• Maintain logs for state and federal computer entries and updates.
• Retrieve and review daily crime reports for accuracy prior to submission to the District Attorney.
• Operate and organize a Department Records Management System to retrieve information such as searches for names, incidents, reports, and calls for service.
• Disseminate records information to department staff, outside law enforcement agencies, the public and other employees according to established laws and guidelines.
• Keep current on continuous changes and additions in report release requirements.
• Handle citizen complaints at the reception counter and on the telephone.
• Assist in training new and other assigned personnel.
• Perform record checks for authorized agencies in strict accordance with the law.
• Process vehicle release forms and collect fees.
• Process mail and order supplies.
• Purge department and citywide files as required.
• Assist in developing procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

If assigned to the Property Unit, duties may include but not limited to:

• Receive and maintain the chain of custody and integrity of, and safely store evidence, found property, and property held for safekeeping.
• Advise staff on proper packaging and submission procedures.
• Conduct inventories and audits of property and evidence.
• Release property to the public or the legally authorized persons in accordance with disposition forms, court orders, or stipulations.
• Check out items needed for court, investigations, and forensic testing; share evidence needed for investigation or review; transport items to and from laboratory and maintain strict records of chain of custody.
• Testify in court to verify chain of custody records of evidence.
• Make arrangements for auction of unclaimed property.

The Position

The Police Public Service Assistant (PSA) III is assigned to the Police Department’s Crime Lab and provides support to the Forensic Specialists and Crime Scene Investigators during operations in the Crime Lab. The Police Public Service Assistant III position requires excellent customer service and communication skills.

Examples of job duties include:

• Ordering and purchasing supplies.
• Re-supply evidence packaging area and appropriate lab areas.
• Clerical tasks, to include typing, running stats, electronic filing tasks, etc.
• Pick up and return evidence as needed.
• Pick up and deliver equipment and supplies.
• Arrange logistical operations within the lab and evidence packaging area including but not limited to arranging chemical waste and sharps removal, filter replacement, etc.
• Minor maintenance on office or lab equipment as required.
• Assist in assembling print kits for evidence collection.
• Identify and communicate with police, and outside vendors to complete job duties.
• Escorts outside vendors while they conduct business on the police campus.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Position

The Public Service Assistant (PSA) II is assigned to the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. Under direct supervision of the Traffic Enforcement Project Specialist, the Public Service Assistant II will perform administrative tasks in support of the Police Department’s Red-Light Camera Unit. This position is a temporary/part-time appointment and may work up to 20 hours a week.

Examples of job duties include:

• Order and prepare court packets of red-light violation from Red Flex for review by court commissioner and defendants.
• Research and understand several sections of the vehicle, government and evidence code as it pertains to red light violations.
• Prepare trial by written declaration packets.
• Research and print out DMV information, including photos and convictions for case files.
• Assist with conducting enforcement sign and equipment verifications.
• Assist with verifying yellow light timing with city Traffic Engineers.
• Assist with review and maintenance of court evidence binders.
• Uploading case file evidence.
• Research statistical studies and assist in report preparation.
• Order office supplies and maintain a functional and organized workspace.
• Retrieve, sort and distribute incoming mail.
• Answer phone and return phone and email messages.
• Other duties as assigned

The Silliman Family Aquatic Center Lifeguard Academy is for those seeking employment with the City of Newark. This program is a beginner-level course that covers Lifeguard Training, Water Park Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, Administering Emergency Oxygen, Swim Lesson Instruction, and center-specific training. Please note that this position requires you to work in an indoor aquatic environment subject to warm/humid temperatures.

**No certifications or previous experience is required! Candidates must be comfortable in the water. Once you successfully pass your lifeguard certification, you’ll get a $1.00 raise to make $19/hour as a lifeguard.**
