Position Duties

The Fleet Management Division in Public Works Department is responsible for the management of the City’s fleet including comprehensive inspection, maintenance, repair, acquisition, and disposal. The City’s vehicle and equipment fleet currently consists of over 2,700 assets.

The Department of Public Works Fleet Management Division is recruiting to fill one (1) Equipment Mechanic Assistant I/II (EMA I/II) position. The EMA I/II is responsible for performing inspections, communicating with other staff and customers, servicing, installation of electronic electrical equipment, ordering parts, entering data in the fleet management system, road testing and diagnosing problems to make various repairs and adjustments on automotive, heavy truck and/or heavy equipment. While working under general supervision, the EMA I/II will be expected to perform safely and follow all rules required by the City of San Jose. These positions, depending on facility assignments, will require working various shift hours and overtime.

The City of Redwood City invites you to apply for the position of Water Resources Specialist.  There is one current opening in the Public Works Services Department, Water Utilities Division. Incumbents report to the Utilities Field Supervisor and performs field, office and technical work.  Responsibilities for this position include the ability to perform the most complex and skilled functions of the Water Resources Section, including duties related to the Water Conservation, Recycled Water and Cross-Connection Control programs and the functional and technical supervision of Water Resource Technicians.

The City is seeking a Cross-Connection Control Specialist to perform a range of technical and specialized duties supporting the City’s water system, including the development, implementation, and maintenance of cross-connection control and backflow prevention programs. This role ensures compliance with safe drinking water standards as well as federal, state, and local regulations. Responsibilities include conducting field investigations, surveys, tests, and audits of work performed by third‑party vendors or contract staff; preparing reports; maintaining records and files; and performing related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
Any combination equivalent to experience and education that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities. A typical way would be:

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by specialized training in backflow prevention, cross-connection control, water distribution, or a related field.

Experience: Three (3) years of increasingly responsible field and/or office experience related to water distribution and cross-connection control, including inspections, data collection, public contact, and the
interpretation and application of policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.

Licenses and Certifications

• Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a satisfactory driving record to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester Certificate issued by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) or Northern California Backflow Prevention Association (NCBPA), to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Cross-Connection Control Specialist Certificate issued by the NCBPA, to be maintained throughout employment.
• Possession of a valid Grade II (D-2) Water Distribution Operator Certificate issued by the State of California Water Resource Control Board, to be maintained throughout employment.

Selection Process
Applications will be reviewed for relevant education, experience, training and other job related qualifications. Based upon a review of employment applications received, a limited number of the qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the examination process.

The process will consist of an Oral Panel Interview (weighted 60%) and a practical exercise (weighted 40%). An eligibility list will be established from those who pass the examination process with a score of 70% or higher. Current and future vacancies may be filled from this list. The list will remain in effect for at least one year unless exhausted sooner. 

The department will invite the most qualified candidates from the eligibility list to a final department interview. The Public Works department will make the hiring decision.

What You'll Do

Key Responsibilities

• Inspect public works and capital projects – including streets, storm drains, sidewalks, grading, and related infrastructure – for compliance with plans, specifications, codes, and safety standards
• Review construction plans, specifications, and permit applications
• Administer encroachment and transportation permits from issuance through closeout
• Prepare daily inspection reports and maintain project documentation, including support for payments and change orders
• Guide contractors on proper construction methods, materials, and standards
• Oversee field testing for soils, asphalt, and concrete
• Perform survey work and assist with traffic engineering studies
• Investigate resident concerns and coordinate solutions with contractors and City staff
• Serve as a liaison among the City, contractors, utilities, businesses, and property owners
• Support interns and assist with training related to permit processing
• Perform light maintenance tasks such as traffic signal timing adjustments
