What You’ll Do

The Senior Engineer supervises and participates in the conduct of complicated engineering planning, design, and investigation activities.

Some duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Supervise and participate in the development of designs, plans, specifications, and estimates for the construction of public works projects related to the WWTP.
• Coordinate with contractors, construction managers, construction inspectors, and the design engineers to resolve issues during construction.
• Coordinate with the staff at the WWTP especially the Plant Manager, Operations Superintendent, and Maintenance Superintendent to make sure the WWTP operations and maintenance needs are incorporated into the projects as well as the impacts to ongoing operations during construction are considered and addressed.
• Inspect project sites to assist in solution of difficult problems; interpret specifications and City policy and make change orders.
• Review plans for construction prepared by private engineers.
• Check computations and specified materials for accuracy and compliance with regulations.
• Upgrade City standard plans and specifications; review subdivision and parcel maps.
• Serve as staff to a variety of City commissions, boards, and committees on public works engineering matters.
• Prepare periodic project status reports.
• Prepare various applications for state and federal grants.
• Review and make recommendations on technical reports and studies.
• Assist in the preparation of the capital improvement plan and budget.
• Participate in the selection and supervision of private professional engineers for the development of plans, specifications, studies, and reports.
• Coordinate engineering-related activities with other City departments, divisions, and sections and with outside agencies.
• Confer with staff regarding project priorities and programs.
• Assist in preparing and administering the operating budget.
• Supervise, train, and evaluate professional and technical subordinates.

The Senior Engineer receives general direction from the Engineering Manager or higher level personnel and exercises direct and indirect supervision over professional and technical engineering personnel.

Who You Are

• You possess knowledge of principles and practices of engineering; modern methods and techniques used in the design and construction of a wide variety of public works engineering projects; modern developments, current literature, and sources of information regarding the assigned areas of assignment; applicable laws and regulatory codes relevant to design and construction in the area of assignment; and principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluation.

What You Bring

• After receiving professional engineer's license, four years’ experience in professional engineering work in areas of assignment.
• Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major work in civil engineering or a closely related field.

License or Certificate:

• Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil engineer in the State of California.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.

The Position 

The Senior Transportation Planner under general direction, organizes, reviews, and participates in transportation planning work; supervises the work of professional and technical transportation planning personnel, projects, and other activities; and performs other related work as required 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 

• Supervises professional and technical staff, including prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, training staff, and supporting hiring decisions in consultation with the Engineering Manager, Deputy Director, and Department Head.

About the Position

The City is seeking a motivated and community-oriented Intern to support the Economic and Community Vitality Division. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in public service, economic development, and community engagement while contributing to meaningful City initiatives.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills who is interested in public sector work and making a positive impact in diverse communities.

Under supervision, you may assist with:

• Supporting economic development and community service initiatives, including research, planning, and implementation

• Conducting research and analysis on programs, policies, and community needs

• Collecting, tracking, and analyzing data to support projects and inform decision making

• Assisting in the preparation of reports, presentations, and recommendations

• Supporting grant related work, including research, tracking, and basic administration

• Participating in community engagement and outreach efforts with diverse stakeholders

• Attending departmental and community meetings, taking notes, and preparing summaries

Minimum Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Education & Experience

• Previous internship, volunteer, academic, or part-time work experience is desirable but not required

• Interest or exposure to economic development, community services, public policy, or local government is a plus

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Opportunity

The County of San Mateo’s Sustainability Department seeks a dynamic and experienced leader for the position of Assistant Director of Sustainability. This role supports the County’s vision to build sustainable communities that meet the needs of both present and future generations.

The Assistant Director will partner closely with the Director to manage a $40M dollar budget and a high-performing team of approximately 35 professionals to lead efforts to combat and adapt to climate change, ensure access to clean energy, water, and air, and conserve natural resources.

You will manage a team dedicated to streamlining our permit processes and ensure that every project--from a backyard deck to a new restaurant--meets our standards for excellence in customer service and adherence to our adopted standards and codes. Key responsibilities include: leadership and supervision, strategic coordination, problem-solving and quality control, customer service excellence and community relations. To be successful in this role, you must possess a unique blend of technical expertise and leadership in customer service.
