Applications are being accepted for the position of Public Works Maintenance Worker with the City of South San Francisco. This is a non-benefited, part-time/hourly position.

Hourly Rate: $35.88- $43.61 per hour

The Department 

The Public Works department is comprised of the Maintenance, Engineering and WQCP (Water Quality Control Plant) divisions. The Maintenance Division is responsible for all of the asphalt and concrete streets within the City as well as all of the associated signalized intersections, streetlights, road signs and traffic markings.  The division also maintains the sanitary sewer/storm system which includes all of the sanitary sewer lines, all of the storm lines and catch basins, several storm water pump stations, as well as various large storm water trash capture devices throughout the City.

THE POSITION

Under close to general supervision, this hourly position is responsible for cleaning and maintaining the downtown corridor, including the removal of litter, debris, and illegal dumping. Duties are primarily driven by SeeClickFix service requests and may include other related maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.
 

IDEAL CANDIDATE 

The ideal candidate will have experience with outdoor maintenance work and be familiar with basic tools, equipment, and safety practices related to cleaning and debris removal in public spaces. They will take pride in keeping high-visibility areas clean and welcoming, respond promptly to service requests (such as those submitted through SeeClickFix), and interact professionally with the public and City staff. The ideal candidate will be reliable, self-motivated, and able to work independently or as part of a team, using sound judgment while following established safety procedures.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Conduct daily cleaning and maintenance of the City’s downtown corridor, ensuring all public areas are free of litter and debris.
• Efficiently empty, clean and service all City owned trash receptacles, adhering to waste disposal and sanitation standards.
• Respond to requests for service in real time via smart device.
• Uses a variety of hand and power tools in connection with the above duties; operates light, motorized equipment, such as pick-ups, flatbeds, and dump trucks.
• Identify and report maintenance issues, safety hazards or vandalism during routine duties to appropriate City personnel.
• Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Experience: One year of experience in general construction or maintenance work.

Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school.

Class Characteristics

Engineering Assistant is a classification of employee that provides technical support and assistance in production, reviewing, and processing of various civil engineering plans, permits, specifications and technical reports; that generates design drawings using CAD and GIS programs; and that performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Example of Duties: (Illustrative Only)

• Learns to and prepares basic designs, specifications, plans, estimates and reports for the development and modification of City infrastructure, including streets, curbs, gutters, underground lines, and various facilities and appurtenances.
• Reviews private development plans submitted by developers, land owners and engineers for adequacy of application and conformance to City standard plans and specifications.
• Participates in the advertising and bid processes for capital projects.
• Provides contract administration support for various public works projects; ensures contractor compliance with contract documents, time and budget estimates.
• Performs precise work and prepares accurate reports of moderate complexity.
• Assists developers, consultants, contractors and the public by providing engineering information and assisting, interpreting and complying with City policy and construction requirements; participates in conferences with engineers, developers and the general public on engineering problems, inquiries or complaints.
• May assist with State and Federal drinking water, sanitary and storm water permit compliance.
• Participates in meetings with other public, regulatory and private organizations
• Prepares a variety of written correspondence, reports, grant applications, procedures and other written materials.
• Maintains a variety of public works department and engineering division program and project files and records.

The Department  

The Department of Economic and Community Development includes four divisions that support the physical and economic well-being of South San Francisco:

• Planning – Long-range planning, development review, and zoning administration.
• Building – Enforces building codes and conducts construction inspections.
• Housing – Manages affordable housing programs and housing policy.
• Economic Development – Supports small businesses and promotes economic growth.

THE POSITION

• This position will work specifically in the Economic Development Division.
• Approximately 15 hours per week, with flexibility depending on outside commitments.
• Availability to support some upcoming events scheduled during occasional weekday late afternoons or evenings.
• The duration of this position is for six months from the date of hire, with the ability to extend based on performance.

TYPICAL DUTIES (may include but are not limited to the following):

• Assists the Division with promotions, and marketing programs that support local businesses.
• Assists the Division with City communications, including email campaigns, social media, and flyer distribution.
• Supports the Division with upcoming events hosted by the City and its economic development partners. Upcoming events include, but are not limited to, the Biotech and Beyond Speaker Series, business workshops both in-person and virtual, community events, and night markets. Support may include event planning, outreach, logistics, and day of planning and support, as needed.
• Assists the Division with implementation of some of Skyline College’s Accelerate Fellowship Program past projects that support downtown revitalization, and business support initiatives.
• Assists the Division with planning event logistics including budgets, timelines, and staffing plans. This also includes onsite coordination of events, including set-up, and clean-up.
• The Economic Development Intern may also support occasional follow up reports needed to show performance metrics from events implemented by the Division.
• General administrative support, as needed.
• This position may occasionally work at either City Hall (400 Grand Avenue) or the Economic Advancement Center (366 Grand Avenue) both in South San Francisco. Events and meetings coordinated by the Division take place all within the City of South San Francisco.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Position Summary
Fitness Instructors/Personal Trainers play a key role in supporting clients’ health and fitness goals by:

• Leading group strength and conditioning classes and personal training sessions.

• Creating a motivating, positive environment for participants.
• Delivering excellent customer service and addressing fitness-related inquiries.
• Ensuring the fitness facility is safe, clean, and fully operational.

Minimum Qualifications

• Graduation from high school or GED equivalent.
• Current certification in personal training or group fitness instruction (e.g., ACE, NASM, or other recognized certification).
• At least one year of experience in fitness instruction, personal training, or related field preferred.
• Experience in strength and conditioning, group instruction, and one-on-one training is highly desirable.

Knowledge and Skills

• Knowledge of strength and conditioning techniques, fitness principles, and wellness practices.
• Ability to motivate and instruct individuals and groups effectively.
• Strong communication skills for clear instruction and positive feedback.
• Skill in assessing client needs and designing individualized programs.
• Ability to safely operate and maintain fitness equipment.

Special Requirements: 

• Current certification in First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). 

• Fitness certifications (e.g., Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor) from a nationally recognized organization.
