Located in many remote areas of the Santa Cruz and Diablo Mountain ranges in the beautiful Santa Clara Valley, this unique opportunity as a new Valley Water Hydrographer I employee offers work assignment variability non-typical of other standard Hydrographer positions and long-term job fulfillment in a fun, relaxed atmosphere while offering a competitive salary/benefit package. The new position supports the allocated $2 million Hydrologic Data Measurement and Management Project within the Hydrology, Hydraulics, and Geomorphology Unit which provides basic modeling calibration Surface Water data for Valley Water’s Flood Control and Groundwater Recharge programs, and many other internal/external customers. This entry level Hydrographer I position is required to support continuing expansion of the current 210 location surface water monitoring network including new gages for SB88 water rights reporting, and Water Supply Operations requirements.

Valley Water is a public agency with an operating and capital budget of $964 million, and over 900 employees. With headquarters in San José, Valley Water provides water supply, enhances streams and watersheds through creek restoration and habitat protection, provides flood protection for homes, schools, businesses and roadways, and partners with other agencies to provide trails and open space for the community.

 

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Operating and maintaining stream/reservoir/precipitation/water temperature stations including installation, calibrating, operating, troubleshooting, and repairing electronic dataloggers/sensors and radio telemetry.
• Performing stream flow measurements in all ranges of flow to create, update, and maintain stream flow rating curves.
• Obtain, process, compute, analyze, interpret, and evaluate hydrologic data while operating and maintaining a specialized hydrologic database and completing an annual station record.
• Respond to requests for information from internal/external customers including engineers, consultants, other public agencies, and the general public.
• Performing surveying at stream gaging stations utilizing differential leveling.
• Provide support in emergency preparedness functions; participate in emergency drills, earthquake response testing and other emergency operations.  Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the hydrologic data field.

Ideal Experience:

• One (1) year of experience in gathering and analyzing hydrologic data.
• Hydrographer experience utilizing USGS policy/procedures.
• Learning in operation/maintenance of stream gages, stream gaging in all flow ranges, and compiling an annual stream gage record.  
• Proven track record of working independently and in a team environment.

Ideal Skills and Abilities:

• Learn to operate and maintain field equipment for gathering and analyzing hydrologic data.
• Learn methods and techniques involved in gathering and analyzing data related to surface water use.
• Learn to operate and maintain a specialized application interfacing a hydrologic database. for inputting and analyzing hydrologic data.
• Aware of applicable federal, state, and local policies, laws, and regulations.
• Read and interpret maps, charts, graphs, plans, drawings, schematics, and diagrams.
• Respond to information from Valley Water employees and outside customers.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Ideal Knowledge:

• Some knowledge of basic principles and theories of hydrology, geology, and meteorology
• Some knowledge of scientific data collection and proper field notes .
• An introduction to operational characteristics of mechanical current meters and/or acoustic flow measurement devices, telemetering equipment, and other mechanical and electronic devices.
• Principles of sciences/mathematics including algebra and trigonometry.
• Principles of analytical report preparation.
• State Senate Bill 88 (measuring and reporting the diversion of water).

Training and Education:

Equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, geology, hydrology, hydraulics, sciences, or a related field.

Hydrology, Hydraulics and Geomorphology Unit (Position Code 281)

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. Employment with Valley Water requires employees to live within 150 miles of their primary physical work location located in San Jose, California by their start date.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule, typically working 40% remote and 60% onsite. 

DEFINITION
Develop content for a variety of materials and media to enhance the Town’s transparent, accurate, and responsive communication with Danville residents, businesses, and customers. Specialist will write articles, press releases and social media content to provide the community with timely and accurate information in matters of public interest and to provide a positive organizational image. Working within the communications and economic development division, this role will also support community events, and requires an understanding of government roles and obligations to the public.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under direct supervision of the Communications & Economic Development Manager. 

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Essential duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Write and disseminate Town press releases.
• Develop and implement content strategy for social media, including campaign development, scheduling, and engagement monitoring.
• Compose and edit Town’s printed quarterly newsletter and monthly email newsletters, working cross-departmentally to gather information.
• Manage production schedules for publications, including the printed quarterly newsletter, monthly email newsletters, and activity guide.
• Work collaboratively with project and program leads to gather information to convey key initiatives accurately and effectively to the community. 
• Develop content for and monitor the Town’s website at danville.ca.gov to ensure information is relevant and timely.
• Maintain the Town’s public engagement website at DanvilleTownTalks.org
• Photograph Town programs, events and projects and attend public meetings, as needed; serve on Town-wide committees and ad hoc project assignments.
• Edit photos and videos for use across Town platforms.
• Provide logistical and operational support for Town-sponsored events, including vendor coordination, permits, and on-site setup/breakdown.
• Attend and provide on-site assistance at Town events, working flexible hours as needed.
• Help manage small-scale business programs and data collection.
• Perform duties within OSHA standards and other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:

• Correct English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation. Knowledge of Associated Press Style strongly preferred.
• Social media campaigns and best practices across multiple platforms.
• Modern office methods, procedures, organization and equipment including Office 365, Meta Business Suite, Canva, and website CMS.
• Photography, videography, and content production and editing techniques.

Ability to:

• Work independently, creatively, collaboratively, and efficiently with minimal supervision.
• Communicate effectively in both verbal and written form.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public.
• Develop project work plans and schedules; determine priorities to meet assigned deadlines.
• Capture action-oriented photos and videos of programs and projects.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years of professional communications, public relations, community engagement, project management, or marketing work. Compensation within the salary range is dependent on experience, and candidates should expect to start within the lower half of the range.

Education:
A Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, journalism, public administration, or a closely related field.

LICENSE(S) AND CERTIFICATION(S)
Possession of a valid California State Driver's License, or license in another state with the ability to obtain a California license within 30 days of hire.

The City of Berkeley invites applications for the position Camp Manager! In this role, you will plan, organize and administer a City Recreational Summer Camp including program operations, administration, facilities, and recreational programs for campers.

The Camp Manager works at the campsite while the Camp is open and is provided with room and board while at the camp. During non-camping season the Camp Manager performs planning, marketing, and staffing functions for the camp.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills for this position is:

Equivalent to graduation from a college or university with major course work in recreation, physical education, business or public administration or a closely related field; and either:

1. Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience in recreation or camp programs, which has included at least two (2) years at a supervisory level. Additional recreation or camp experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for up to two (2) years of the education requirement. OR
2. One year experience (or equivalent summer sessions) in a residence recreational summer camp at a level equivalent to the City’s Camp Staff Supervisor.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to travel to various locations within the City of Berkeley and to the camps to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. When driving on City business, the incumbent is required to maintain a valid California driver's license as well as a satisfactory driving record.

CPR and first aid certification required at start of the summer season. Ability to get class 1 or 2 water treatment and sewage treatment certifications may be required.

The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure providing quality, cost-effective, and timely services for the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. This also includes support of other City Departments providing services to the community.  DPW support includes managing more than 750 fleet assets essential in delivering quality public safety, power, water, sewer, parks, and streets maintenance services to the City.

The Position: 

This classification is the entry level of the City's Automotive Technician series and reports to the Public Works Supervisor, Automotive Technician II/III, or higher-level classification as assigned.  Incumbents in this classification perform routine safety and preventative maintenance inspections of motorized vehicles and equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements:

Minimum Experience Requirements:

One (1) year of automotive or heavy equipment (truck or construction equipment) servicing work.

 

Acceptable Substitution: 

Course completion from an accredited institution or an appropriate trade school, or technical coursework from an accredited institution, in diesel or gasoline-powered mechanics leading to an Associate degree or journey level certification may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Desirable Qualification: 

Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license with Air Brake Test is highly desirable.

License/Certifications: 

• Possession of an appropriate, valid California class C driver's license is required at time of appointment.
• Possession and maintenance of the following State of California Licenses and Certificates is required prior to completion of the probationary period:

                               Class A California driver's license with air brake test
                               ASE Certifications-A, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and A9 or L1 or L3

• Incumbents shall be required to obtain and maintain any other license(s) and/or certificate(s) that may be required by future regulation for the performance of listed typical tasks.

Other Requirements:  

• Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
