The Essentials

 

Minimum Qualifications 

To be considered for the Paralegal position, applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria.  Please note: The required written declaration from a supervising attorney[1] verifying your qualifications is not required at the time of your initial application submission. If you are selected to progress to the reference check stage of the recruitment process, you will be contacted with instructions on how to provide this documentation.

1. A paralegal certificate from an American Bar Association (ABA) approved paralegal program plus at least one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks. 
 

2. A paralegal certificate or degree from a nationally or regionally accredited, or Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education-approved post-secondary institution that requires successful completion of 24 semester (or equivalent) units in law related courses plus at least one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

3. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university plus at least one (1) year of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.

4. An associate’s degree from a community college plus at least two (2) consecutive years of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to perform paralegal tasks.
 

5. A high school diploma or GED, plus at least three (3) consecutive years of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney. The law-related experience must be verified by a written declaration from the supervising attorney confirming the applicant is qualified to preform paralegal tasks. The law-related experience also must have been completed withing the four (4) years immediately prior to applying for the Paralegal position.

 

[1] The supervising and declaring attorney must be an active member of the California bar in good standing for at least the past three (3) years or must have practiced in the federal courts of California for at least the past three (3) years.

 

Highly Desirable Qualification(s):

• Demonstrated proficiency with MS Office Suite and technology tools relevant to legal practice.

What You’ll Do 

• Serve as a vital liaison between the City Attorney’s Office and various City departments, facilitating the accurate and timely flow of information.
• Conduct fact investigations and perform foundational legal research to support casework.
• Draft and prepare legal correspondence, including notices, contracts, resolutions, ordinances, and discovery requests and responses.
• Monitor and maintain tracking systems for subpoenas, legal claims, and lawsuits, ensuring strict adherence to relevant deadlines
• Coordinate and process requests under the California Public Records Act.
• Provide informed guidance to City Staff and members of the public regarding the City’s legal processes and procedures.
• Manage and maintain confidential legal files and records.

 

Work Schedule 

This position is primarily onsite and requires in-office attendance five days per week for the first six months. Following six months of employment and a demonstrated record of exceptional performance, the Paralegal may be considered for a hybrid schedule, which includes the option to work remotely one day per week.

The Government Affairs Specialist I under supervision, performs most of the duties required of the position but is not expected to function at the same skill level required of a level II.   Annual Pay Range: $106,412-$132,925

The Government Affairs Specialist II is expected to perform the full range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising a higher level of judgment and initiative. Receives occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise.  Annual Pay Range:  $117,353-$146,537

Working Environment and Schedule:  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work schedule which will be divided between onsite work, at home remote work, some outdoor work, some local travel, and occasional travel to Sacramento. When government affairs-related events are scheduled, the Government Affairs Specialist may be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Outdoor work could include driving off-road (training provided) and hiking on trails in temperatures ranging from cold and blustery to hot and dry. Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in these types of field conditions as well as driving around the Bay Area. This position is part of the Public Affairs department at Midpen’s administrative office located in Los Altos, California. 

Education and Experience:  Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public relations, communications, business administration, public policy or a closely related field, and:

Government Affairs Specialist I: one (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in  government affairs or strategic partnerships is highly desired. No experience is required.

Government Affairs Specialist II: two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in government affairs or strategic partnerships.

Licenses & Certifications Required:  Possession of a valid California Driver’s License.

The jail provides a necessary link in the criminal justice system. About the Position: Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen) is seeking a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern in the Information Systems and Technology (IST) Department. The GIS Intern will perform GIS mapping and analysis tasks in support of land acquisition, open space planning, capital improvement, and resource management activities. Responsibilities include creating maps for District Board reports and presentations; compiling and synthesizing geographic data; developing attribute data for feature classes; performing basic geoprocessing; maintaining and updating GIS databases as new data are collected; preparing, modifying and updating District site maps and brochures; providing graphic support for other departments including the development of maps, charts, displays, presentations, graphics, brochures, and drawings; and collecting field data. Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Current enrollment in an associate’s, bachelor’s, or master’s degree program, or trade school in a relevant field. Successful candidates will have a background in geography, planning, environmental studies, landscape architecture, or another related field; demonstrated experience with ArcGIS software; and demonstrated expertise/enthusiasm in cartography and map production. This position requires great attention to detail, excellent communication and critical thinking skills, the ability to work well both in a team setting and independently, the desire to learn, and the willingness to occasionally work in rugged, remote settings. Knowledge of web GIS and experience with field data collection are a plus. Working Conditions/Schedule: This position is based primarily in-office at our Administrative Office in Los Altos, CA, as part of the IST department. While the majority of work will be performed in an office setting, there may be occasional instances of field data collection. These field activities are infrequent but may involve travel in a district vehicle and, at times, working independently in varied outdoor conditions, including remote and rugged terrain with numerous biotic and abiotic hazards during inclement weather. This is a temporary position working 24 – 32 hours per week (within regular business days/hours). Regular business is conducted Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Interns may work up to a total of 950 hours over a 7-to-9-month period. This is a non-benefited position.

REPORTING RESPONSIBILITIES
Receives general supervision from and reports directly to the General Manager and his/her
designated representative.

ESSENTIAL AND IMPORTANT DUTIES

• Receives, opens, time stamps, and distributes incoming mail.
• Receives and reviews invoices, identifies appropriate general ledger code, enters information into system, generates checks for payment of invoices, obtains necessary signatures, and mails payment to vendors.
• Answers multi-line telephone, screens callers/customers, responds to questions and provides general information regarding. Refers callers/customers to the proper individual for handling when appropriate.
• Monitors, maintains, and updates information on the Authority’s external website and intranet. Ensures that information is accurate and current and provides feedback and updated information to the webmaster.
• Gathers and compiles data and information for general purposes and/or special reports or projects such as the annual report; contacts other divisions, employees, agencies, and individuals for additional material, as necessary.
• Operates a variety of office equipment, including copiers, scanners, fax machines, computers, and printers.
• Provides administrative support to the General Manager, Finance Officer, Claims Administrator, and other staff, as necessary. Maintains calendars, schedules appointments/conference rooms, screens appointments and/or refers to appropriate sources to organize and coordinate staff appointments.
• Designs and creates a variety of brochures, flyers, newsletters, forms, and/or training materials utilizing graphics/publishing software.
