THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the temporary and part-time position of Lifeguard in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Department. This position is part-time, up to 25 hours per week during the summer with opportunities to work during the school year.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of duties related to supervising the pool, decks and additional areas of an aquatic facility.

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Maintain constant surveillance as assigned to safeguard swimmers from drowning and other accidents.
• Maintain discipline and orderly conduct among patrons and enforce all pertinent City pool rules and regulations.
• Promote and enforce water safety procedures; perform swimming rescues; render first aid and CPR as required.
• Assist in the planning, promoting and organizing of prescribed Red Cross programs and special events.
• Perform pool maintenance functions as required.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Prepare and maintain accurate and up to date records and reports.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of water safety and swimming rescue techniques.

Responsibilities:

The Hydro Technician / Operator installs, maintains, tests, troubleshoots, repairs, services, and operates turbine generator units, auxiliary equipment, and large civil infrastructure associated with hydroelectric power generating stations and facilities.

 

Essential Duties: (other duties may be assigned)

Assemble, disassemble, and reassemble mechanical equipment, replace/repair parts, align, test, and adjust as necessary.

Perform preventative and corrective maintenance to equipment such as large turbines, pumps, diesel generators, and hydraulic systems.

Repair and rebuild air compressors, oil pumps, large valves, governing systems, oil lubrication systems, and complex hydraulic systems.

Repair, modification, inspection, and maintenance of major civil structures, including concrete dams, tunnels, and roads.

Monitor, control, and operate hydroelectric generating stations and associated equipment.

Test, troubleshoot, and repair malfunctions or failures of electrical and/or mechanical equipment.

Observe equipment operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance performance.

Set up and operate machine tools to repair and/or reproduce parts and fittings, working from blueprints and/or reverse engineering.

Utilize a Computerized Maintenance Management System to plan work assignments and document test results and repairs.

Utilize office and specialty computer programs as needed for predictive maintenance tasks. Maintain logs, records, and files. Update drawings, equipment files, sketches, and reports. Inform system dispatchers and supervisors of the status of operating equipment.

Respond to and evaluate plant emergencies and maintain regulatory water flow requirements.

Fabricate, modify, shape, and repair metal equipment parts using a variety of metal working machines and welding methods.

Perform complex rigging and crane operations. Operate snow cats, backhoes, boats, & forklifts.

Perform housekeeping duties to keep work areas clean and safe.

 

Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent.

At least 5 years of mechanical experience, preferably in hydroelectric power generation. Completion of a relevant state-certified apprenticeship (preferred) or equivalent.

Must possess unrestricted CA Drivers’ License and clean driving record.

Ability to complete physically demanding work in rough natural terrain and noisy environments with the presence of safety hazards that must be appropriately managed to ensure safe operations.

Willingness to relocate permanent residence to within 50 miles of Murphys, CA.

Lifeguards observe the activity of swimmers in and around the American Canyon community pool and must have the ability to make appropriate decisions and act quickly, provide lifesaving services as needed.  Lifeguards also teach swim lessons and assist with other pool-related activities. 

 Typical Duties include:

• Monitor swimming and other pool activities to prevent accidents.
• Explain and enforce pool safety rules and regulations to facility users.
• Maintain individual and group discipline in and around the pool areas. 
• Assist in identifying and correction hazardous conditions and unsafe practices.
• Rescue swimmers in distress and administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) techniques when necessary. 
• Keep a daily log of rescues and other emergencies, and prepare written report of the activities.
• Assist in implementing emergency procedures.
• Provide swimming instruction.
• Perform pool and facility maintenance as assigned.

The position can include working shifts that are scheduled during early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays.  This is a position that is considered temporary/part-time and employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours per fiscal year.  The busiest season is summer - June through August - when Lifeguards are most heavily scheduled.

THE CITY

Located in the southern portion of world-famous, wine-growing Napa County, 35 miles northeast of San Francisco, American Canyon first developed following World War II and incorporated in 1992. American Canyon plays an important role in the Napa Valley wine industry with continuous growth in wine logistics, wine making, storage and distribution. 

American Canyon is also home to growing major food production industries, such as Coca Cola, Barry Callebaut Chocolate and Mezzetta.  With a current population of 20,500 in more than 6 square miles, the City plans for a population of 25,000 by 2025.

The City operates its own Water Treatment Plant and Water Reclamation Facility.

THE POSITION

The City of American Canyon is seeking a capable, efficient Plant Maintenance Mechanic I to perform a variety of assignments related to the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair functions on equipment in the water treatment plant, water reclamation facility, and pumping stations. This work will include diagnosing and programming Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), pumps, chemical feed equipment, valves, and other equipment and components used for water or wastewater treatment, storage, and distribution.

The City recently approved a 5-year contract with its represented employees that includes an annual cost-of-living increase. 

Depending on applicant qualifications, the City may hire at either the

• Plant Maintenance Mechanic I level - $36.40/hr. to $44.25/hr. or
• Plant Maintenance Mechanic II level - $40.18/hr. to $48.85/hr.

This position is not designated for retired annuitants.

There is currently one part-time position available in the Recreation, Parks and Marina Department. However, the list established by this recruitment can be used to fill other part-time positions throughout the City as they occur.

 

Community

Suisun City is located midway between San Francisco and Sacramento in south central Solano County.  The City, which was among the first to incorporate in California, developed around a waterfront that has direct access to San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.  Although the City is largely developed, several large parcels exist, and a large annexation is on the horizon that signals ongoing development activity will continue to be in the City’s future. 

 

The Position

The primary job responsibility of the Maintenance Worker I is to join our team of field employees who work daily to maintain, repair, and construct the physical systems of that serve the community, including parks, recreation equipment, streets, traffic signals, landscaped areas, sewer & storm drain collection systems, and other public facilities. We’re looking for creative problem-solvers to perform high-quality skilled work with a variety of tools and equipment types under the direction and guidance of more experienced lead workers and managers in both individual and team projects.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

• Performs a variety of maintenance and repair work on various City facilities and structures including streets, landscaped areas, recreation facilities, sewer, storm drains, traffic signals, and other public facilities.
• Operates construction and maintenance equipment and power tools such as a dump truck, front-end loader, backhoe, tractor, overlay machine, jetter, compressor, jackhammer, paint sprayer, and concrete saw; maintains hand tools and assigned equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
• Conducts traffic control when working in high traffic areas of the City; installs street barricades and cones prior to the performance of maintenance or repair activities; directs and controls traffic around work sites.
• Performs various street maintenance functions; identifies and repairs pothole areas; repairs or replaces cracked, raised, sunken, or otherwise damaged sidewalks, curbs and gutters; removes any roadway hazards; identifies all areas needing striping and/or painting; maintain, clean, and repair collection systems.
• Maintains, installs, and repairs traffic signal systems; maintain and repair street lighting systems, program controllers.
• Prepares, installs, repairs, and replaces City signposts and signs; cleans and maintains existing signs; trims vegetation that presents safety hazards, clears walkways of trash and debris; removes graffiti.
• Maintains assessment districts and landscaped areas including parkways, open space areas, and medians; performs weed abatement and pesticide applications; installs and maintains irrigation systems to ensure proper operating efficiency; maintains, trims, and removes trees.
• Utilizes proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
• Clears, maintains, and disposes of trash in public areas; oversees the work of contract staff; performs special projects as required.

AQUATICS FACILITIES MAINTENANCE WORKER

While the current vacancy is for a 1500 hour position, this recruitment may be used to fill 1000 hour positions in the future. The work schedule is 5 days a week and can include weekends and evenings.

DEFINITION

To perform a wide variety of duties related to maintaining the City’s Aquatics facilities, pools, splash pads and property.

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform duties related to the preventative and daily operation of pool systems, equipment and features.
• Test water for chlorine, pH, total alkalinity, hardness, total dissolved solids and cyanuric acid; apply chemicals to ensure safe and healthy water quality consistent with requirements and regulations; maintain required logs.
• Inspect aquatic equipment for leaks, broken or failing equipment, and mechanical repairs.
• Performing cleaning and custodial duties within and surrounding facilities.

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade and completed 12 semester (or equivalent quarter) units which includes 3 units in administration or staff relations and/or 3 units in early childhood education.
