As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Minimum Requirements:
• Minimum age 18 at time of application; and
• One (1) year of full-time paid or volunteer work experience involving considerable contact with the general public

Desirable Qualifications:
• Paid or volunteer work experience within a law enforcement agency, the U.S. Armed Forces, or a related agency

• Will be required to work special events
• Will be required to work odd and unusual hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
• Will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting

Public Safety Dispatcher-In-Training is the entry and trainee level in the public safety dispatcher series. The Police Officer - Lateral position is a sworn position in the Police Department. • POST Academy Graduation Certificate
• First Aid Card & CPR Certificate 

Additional Requirements:

• Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for, and who has applied for, citizenship at least one year prior to application for employment. Application for citizenship shall not have been denied.
• Pre-employment: ability to pass drug and alcohol test; candidates must not have been convicted by any state or by the federal government of a crime, the punishment for which could have been imprisonment in a federal penitentiary or a state prison.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION AND POLYGRAPH TEST
An intensive background investigation will be conducted on each final candidate in accordance with the Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission Peace Officer Background Investigations Guidelines. Candidates will also be required to successfully pass a polygraph test administered by a licensed polygrapher, a psychological exam given by a City-selected psychologist and a medical exam by a City physician (to include a stress test EKG and general physical examination). The results of the psychological exam are valid for one year. The City of Campbell's Police Department is seeking qualified candidates for Public Safety Dispatcher!

Under general supervision, to receive and transmit routine and emergency telephone, radio and computer messages; to keep a variety of police records; and to do related work as required.

Typical Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Answers all telephone calls promptly and courteously;
• Makes rapid and accurate determination of the nature of each call and the degree, severity, and location of any emergency;
• Refers non-emergency callers to the appropriate agency or other resource;
• Questions emergency callers to elicit complete and accurate information necessary for emergency response and enters information in the computer-aided dispatch system;
• Gather information using multiple audio and visual resources;
• Selects emergency response units in exact accordance with established user agency policies and procedures;

• Closely monitors any situation presenting a potential danger to the life or safety of field personnel and takes immediate action to dispatch assistance as required;

• Participates in training and evaluation activities to establish and maintain a high level of proficiency;

Hours of Work: Public Safety Dispatchers typically work 12 hours shifts, with 4 work days one week and 3 work days the following week.  Shifts available area a day and night shift, or variation, that can rotate every six months.  Dispatchers may have to work weekends, holidays and overtime. 

Special Conditions: Incumbents must have the ability to work, as assigned, on schedules that may include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and non-traditional work hours; and a willingness to work overtime as required.

Other Requirements: Must be able to perform all the essential functions of the job assignment.  All candidates will be required to pass a City background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and may include polygraph and/or psychological testing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience:

• Graduation from an accredited high school (GED may be substituted for a high school diploma); plus
• One year of successful full-time responsible experience performing work where the essential functions of the job involved public contact, computer usage or heavy telephone traffic.

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR APPLICATION:

LATERAL APPLICANTS:
Lateral applicants that are currently employed as a Public Safety Dispatcher (non-probationary) do not need to submit proof of test scores, however a California POST Dispatcher Academy Certificate is required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS 

The position of Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is the training level classification for general police and fire work for those incumbents not affiliated with an agency and currently enrolled in a police academy. Incumbents are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until successful completion of the police academy. Assignment to this classification is temporary. If incumbents do not successfully complete a police academy, they will be terminated.  Incumbents hired after the graduation from the California POST Basic Academy are not sworn personnel and are generally in this classification until they are promoted to Public Safety Officer I.

Public Safety Officer Academy Attendee/Graduate is distinguished from the higher-level Public Safety Officer I in that the latter is a sworn position where incumbents continue training for both police and fire duties. Incumbents must successfully complete the police academy prior to being promoted to the classification of Public Safety Officer I.
