The City of Menlo Park seeks per diem librarians to contribute to operations activities, projects and programs in the Library and Community Services Department. Per diem librarians may support a combination of the activities below depending on the needs--location of service may vary. This is an outstanding opportunity to gain experience and grow with a great team of people in a dynamic and interesting work environment.

Schedules vary based on the needs of the library system. Both Menlo Park Library locations are open on Saturdays and Sundays, and until 8pm three nights per week. Regular availability for one weekend day and one evening will be expected. Selected candidates from this applicant pool may be assigned to work at either library location. Per diem librarian positions are scheduled for less than 20 hours per week and may not exceed 980 hours within a twelve (12) month period.

 

Job Duties/Functions

• On a continuous basis, sits at a desk and/or stands at counter for long periods of time. Intermittently bends, twists, kneels or squats while shelving books, opening boxes, or moving equipment; twists and reaches office equipment; writes and uses keyboard to communicate and enters/retrieves data; runs errands; lifts or carries weight of up to 50 pounds. Pushes loaded book carts.
• Assists users in the use of computers and/or other electronic devices
• May provide or support story time sessions (children or adult,) or the willingness to learn how to provide the service
• May host/support/coordinate programs (children, teen, adult,); willingness to learn how to provide that service
• Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Provide assistance to and advise patrons of all age groups in the effective use of the Library’s collection, facilities and services; demonstrate the use of library resources, tools, equipment, and electronic reference sources; assist with digital downloads and respond to difficult or technical questions as they relate to the use of electronic resources. Compile subject bibliographies
• Develop an assigned area of the Library collection; review and analyze collection use; recommend books and materials for purchase based on patron needs and according to the variety of patron ages, abilities, education, interests, cultures, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The Part-Time Golf Service Assistant is responsible for performing customer service and cash handling tasks in accordance with standard procedures and following specific instructions from the supervising staff. Summary Description

Water Distribution Operator I: This is the entry level class in the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator II by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to workers in this series. Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters related to City established procedures and guidelines as are positions allocated to the II level. Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or indirectly related work experience. Employees work under immediate supervision while learning job tasks.

Water Distribution Operator II: This is the full journey level class within the Water Distribution Operator series. This class is distinguished from the Water Distribution Operator I by the assignment of the full range of duties assigned. Distinguishing Characteristics

Associate Engineer - This is the journey level class in the engineering series. Representative Duties

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

1. Perform professional and technical engineering work relative to assigned area of responsibility, such as design, land development, and capital improvements.
2. Design and prepare plans and specifications for public works projects including pumping stations, streets, storm drains, sewer lines, and related projects; research project design requirements; perform calculations and prepare estimates of time and material costs.
3. Answer inquiries from realtors, developers, engineers, and the general public.
4. Develop revised design and construction standards for public works structures and appurtenances.
5. Serve as construction inspector to ensure compliance on City projects, subdivisions, and encroachments.

Associate Civil Engineer:

Other duties may include determining codes, regulations, and requirements; preparing, reviewing and coordinating the development of engineering plans, specifications, agreements, maps, reports; providing project management for municipal public works projects; reviewing construction bids; administering grant applications; responding to public inquiries; assisting in survey work; administering permits for utility, street use, and franchise; and providing engineering support for other City departments.  

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. 

• A minimum of three (3) years of responsible civil engineering experience performing duties comparable to an Assistant Civil Engineer. 

• Possession and maintenance of a valid registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California or possess Professional Engineer Registration in another state with the ability to obtain California registration within six (6) months. 

 

The ideal Associate Engineer candidate will possess the following:    

• Possession of a Master’s degree is desirable. 

• Advanced knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices and methods as applicable to a municipal setting.   

• Municipal or related consultant experience highly desirable.  

 

Senior Civil Engineer: 

The Senior Civil Engineer performs is responsible for managing a wide range of Public Works projects and initiatives, as well as the potential to supervise and oversee professional, journey-level, and technical staff and consultants. The Senior Civil Engineer for will report directly to the Principal Civil Engineer of the Capital Improvement Program (CIP).  The Engineering Team work under the general direction of the City Engineer/Deputy Public Works Director.    

The Senior Civil Engineer for CIP will manage projects in a broad range of disciplines including water, sewer, storm drain, pavement, transportation, and facilities.   The City’s CIP budget for fiscal year 2024-2025totals $142 million and consists of approximately 96 projects, including the replacement of Fire Station 52, the construction of water tanks, water and sewer mains and pump stations, railroad grade separation, and transportation projects.  The community additionally passed a local measure, which provides for enhanced funding for pavement treatment.  The Senior Engineer will be entering into a cohesive, collaborative and supportive Engineering Section team.    

 

The ideal Senior Civil Engineer candidate will possess the following:    

• Possession of a Master’s degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. 

• Possession of Professional Traffic Engineer Registration in the State of California highly desirable.  

• Municipal professional engineering and supervisory experience highly desirable.  

 

Minimum Requirements 

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field. 

• A minimum of four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience performing program management or project coordination; at least two (2) years of this experience must be equivalent to an Associate Civil Engineer or above.  

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment. 

• Possession and maintenance of a valid registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California or possess Professional Engineer Registration in another state with the ability to obtain California registration within six (6) months.

What You'll Do

The Library Assistant I/II performs a wide variety of library support work and technical library tasks related to such activities as acquisition, cataloging, classification, circulation, and assisting patrons; and performs related work as required.  The current vacancy may be filled at either level based on experience.  Depending upon class level and assignment, duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Prepare print and non-print materials for introduction into the library materials collection, including use of an automated system to retrieve cataloging data and produce catalog cards; preparing and affixing identification labels and pockets to materials; pull discarded materials from catalog card files.
• Assign routine tasks and provide technical instruction to part time and other subordinate positions in area of responsibility.
• Assist in the acquisition, processing and maintenance of the periodical, microform, audio visual, business, historical, or other special collection for the library.
• Assist adults and children in locating materials in the library and in placing requests for materials not available.  Refer more difficult or technical questions to appropriate library staff.
• Handle patron complaints for overdue and lost materials; refer delinquent accounts to an agency for collection.
• Maintain statistics of library use; use computer produced and manual data to prepare reports on circulation processing, inquiries received and other activities.
• Assist in ordering and receiving books, records, cassettes, periodicals, and other library materials and preparing associated paperwork for payment.
• Perform routine clerical assignments, including typing, maintaining files, and routing mail.
• Use a microcomputer or the City's mainframe system for word processing, data file management, and statistical record keeping.
• Process incoming and outgoing interlibrary loan requests; receive and send requests via computer as well as by mail; verify requests for accuracy.
• Provide story hours to children and participate in other programs for children and young adults.
• Prepare and maintain displays and exhibits; develop artwork for publicity materials.
• Recruit and keep records of the work of volunteers in the library; screen potential volunteers and direct to appropriate library division for assignment.
• Assist and advise outreach volunteers and serve as library liaison to Peninsula Library System Outreach Service in the City of San Mateo.
• Check out library materials to patrons; check in and prepare materials for return to the circulating collection; register new patrons; collect overdue fines.
• Respond to patron in person and telephone requests for library materials, services, and information.

The Library Assistant I/II receives direction from higher level personnel.  The Library Assistant II may provide technical supervision over lower-level library positions.
