This Recreation Leader position will focus on our Millbrae Adventure Summer Camp, in working as a Camp Counselor.  Hours will vary, and applicants are expected to be available to work 8 full camp weeks from June 12 - August 4.  Recreation Leaders are also expected to attend a mandatory, paid training from June 5th through 8th.

 

Definition: Under supervision, to provide leadership to recreation programs, activities or service; organizes and implements program elements and oversees participants; and performs related work as required.  This is a temporary part-time non-benefited position. 

 

Essential Duties:  Depending upon assignment, the duties of a Summer Camp Counselor - Recreation Leader I , II or III may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assists in planning, organizing, and leading summer camp activities.
• Organizes, inventories and maintains necessary facilities and materials.
• Maintains group and individual discipline. 
• Facilitates safe and positive camp experiences
• Follow written curriculum to implement activities including arts and crafts, group games, and sports.  
• Keeps records of attendance, participation.
• Typical duties include: implementation of camp curriculum, record keeping, maintaining supplies, and supervising groups of youth aged 3 to 12.
• Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

 

Special Requirements:   Vision adequate to supervise participants in recreational programs; speak clearly; ability to bend stoop or crouch; physical stamina to supervise groups of youth participating in recreational programs; ability to work off-hours, shifts or events as required; strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 20 pounds; and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather and temperature conditions.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

Knowledge of: 

• Common crafts, sports, games and recreation activities appropriate for all ages.
• Principles and methods used in organizing, conducting and supervising a program of recreational activities.
• Record keeping techniques.
• Basic first aid and safety practices and procedures.

• Conduct daily camp operations including leading groups, activities, field trips, and set-up/break down of activities.

Education & Experience: 

Recreation Leader I:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 15 at time of appointment.  Must possess a work-permit. No previous experience required.

 

Recreation Leader II:  Current enrollment in high school, with minimum age of 16 at time of appointment.  Equivalent to three (3) months of full-time experience (approximately 500 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience in recreation programs or equivalent. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable. 

 

Recreation Leader III:  Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12) grade.  Equivalent to six (6) months full-time experience (approximately 1000 hours) of volunteer or paid work experience equivalent to a Recreation Leader II with the City of Millbrae. Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

  

Certificates:  Must possess a first aid/CPR certification, or be willing to obtain one. 

 

Service Standards:  

Must successfully complete background process.  All candidates will be fingerprinted pursuant to California State Law.  All successful candidates under age 18 must possess a work permit prior to hire.

DEFINITION

To plan, organize, market and coordinate a variety of parks, recreation, library and community services programs as assigned; to oversee day-to-day program and related-facility needs; and to perform a variety of professional and technical level tasks relative to area of assigned responsibility.

 

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the entry level class in the Parks, Recreation & Libraries Coordinator series.  This class is distinguished from the journey level by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within this series.  Employees at this level are not expected to perform with the same independence of direction and judgment on matters allocated to the journey level.  Since this class is typically used as a training class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.   Employees work under general supervision while learning job tasks.

• Participate in the selection of full-time and part-time staff, contract instructors, and volunteers; provide and coordinate training, oversee work activities and performance and make related recommendations.

• Assist with the creation and implementation of marketing plans for assigned programs and services; promote and market a variety of existing and new recreation and library services; foster public awareness of available services and programs.
• Facilitate emergency drills and safety training of facilities; ensure off-site excursions meet City safety and liability requirements.
• Supervise the use and scheduling of facilities; work with other City departments and divisions to ensure proper maintenance and safety of facilities related to assigned program area; oversee City field use including youth sport allocations, joint use agreements, and rentals.
• Prepare financial and statistical reports related to program activities; benchmark programs and services; compile and analyze trends; prepare other reports and administrative materials.
• Participate in budget preparation and administration; prepare cost estimates for assigned programs; submit justifications for part-time and seasonal staff, materials, supplies and services; monitor and control expenditures.
• Answer questions and provide information to the public; investigate complaints and recommend corrective action as necessary to resolve complaints.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.

Experience and Training

 

Experience:

• One year of professional experience in parks, recreation and/or library program development and implementation and/or facility operations is desirable.

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, First Aid and CPR Certifications as issued by the American Red Cross within 6 months of hire.

About the Position

The Fire Prevention Officer position is managed in partnership with the Redwood City Fire Department.

 

The Fire Prevention Officer performs technical inspection and investigative work in enforcing compliance with laws, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to the prevention and control of fires. The Fire Prevention Officer also conducts field inspections, performs moderate level, less complicated fire plan review of buildings, fire protection equipment, and industrial processes to ensure compliance with the requirements of federal, state, and municipal fire protection codes and ordinances.

 

A Fire Prevention Officer is expected to have general working knowledge of fire protection systems and investigative techniques. Employees in this class must regularly exercise technical, professional judgment, and discretion based on their familiarity with a wide variety of fire prevention codes and investigative techniques. They must also have good public relations abilities, negotiating skills and problem solving talents. They must also exhibit excellent customer service skills. This position is expected to have sufficient knowledge of the building industry to perform fire inspections and minor plan checks relating to new and remodeled construction.

 

This position receives supervision from the Fire Marshal.

 

Essential Duties

• Interpret and enforce provisions of fire prevention and fire safety laws, ordinances and other regulations;
• Perform periodic and follow –up inspections of new and existing buildings, structures and installations requiring fire clearances;
• Investigate complaints pertaining to violation of fire prevention laws and give correction orders as necessary, including weed abatement;
• Investigate the origin and cause of fires, collects, prepares, and presents evidence in court when required;
• Performs wildland urban interface inspections, investigates wildland fuel complaints and take enforcement action when necessary;

• Day Camps: Summer Day Camps has four separate camp sites - Camp Play (ages 4-6), Teen Scene (ages 11-14), SPARKS and Camp Roseville (ages 6-12). Each Day Camp will offer a variety of sports, games, dress-up days, arts & crafts, as well as weekly field trips, special events and trips to the pool.

• Specialty Camps: will run weekly and are theme specific camps (examples: Cooking, Dinosaur Camp and more). These camps can be for ages 3-10 and run 9am-12pm and 1pm-4pm daily.

• Adventure Club Camps: Adventure Club is a child care program that offers care for kindergarteners through 5th grade. Staff engage with our children in games, crafts, and other developmentally appropriate activities. We look for caring, patient and fun care givers to support the growth and learning of our children.

• RPAL: Roseville Police Activities League is a 6-8 week program running Tuesday-Thursday during the summer for kids ages 8-12. Activities will include arts, games, teambuilding and field trips.

• Aquatics Concessions: Concessions (snack bar) is open at the Roseville Aquatics Complex and Johnson Pool every day from 1:00pm-5:00pm. Additional evening shifts may be available. Responsibilities include preparing and serving food items, cashiering, and providing exceptional customer service.

DEFINITION:

To perform a variety of duties related to assisting in planning and conducting recreation programs and maintaining recreational facilities.

 

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Assist in support of recreation programs and activities such as games, special events, arts and crafts, drama and social and sports activities.
• Interact with and assist supervision of youth in games and activities and in proper use of playground apparatus.
• Maintain safety and positive behavior of participants.
• Prep food and assist with concessions.
• Promote and enforce safety procedures; render first aid and CPR, if certified, as required.
• Notify appropriate staff of any problems with regard to facility, children and parents.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• Leading and organizing games and activities; techniques and principles of effective interpersonal communication.
• Principles and techniques of first aid and CPR.

 

Ability to:

• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations and observe safety rules; walk long distances; interpret policies and procedures and problem solve issues for the public and with staff; participate with children in games and sports activities that involve running, bending, squatting, jumping and reaching; lean, stoop and bend to set up or break down equipment.
• Intermittently set up booths, hang banners, move tables, chairs and carry supplies; lift or carry weight of 45 pounds or less.
• Understand and carry out written and oral directions.
• Communicate tactfully with customers.
• Work out doors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Respond to emergency situations in a calm and effective manner; administer first aid and CPR, if certified.
• Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

 

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Experience:

• None required. Job Experience Training certification is desirable.

AND

Training:

• Equivalent to the completion of the ninth (9th) grade and fourteen (14) years of age by the beginning of summer programs.

AND

License or Certificate:

• Possession of, or ability to obtain, CPR and First Aid certifications within six (6) months of hire.

SELECTION PROCESS

Applications will be screened by the Human Resources Department for minimum qualifications.  Qualifying applicants may be contacted by the Department to interview. Final appointment is contingent upon a check of past employment references, passing a City-paid fingerprint check and depending on position applied for a pre-employment medical exam and a drug and alcohol screening test.
