 THE POSITION  

The Community Development and Transportation Department (CDT) is seeking a value-driven team player to fill the position of Planning Intern. This internship provides an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic college level student seeking broad experience within a dynamic City Planning Division. The Planning Division of the Community Development and Transportation Department administers City Council policies contained in the General Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and other plans and ordinances. In addition, the Division establishes new and amended rules governing land use and urban design for adoption by City Council from the platform of the General Plan. The Division provides staff, professional service, and administrative support relating to the development, improvement, and preservation of affordable housing opportunities.

The Planning Intern will assist with a number of projects and efforts throughout the Division, which may include:

• Shadowing and assisting Planning staff during counter hours
• Maintaining a database of Planning permit records and files to serve an online permit viewing tool;
• Conducting research for various strategic planning studies that could include: Central Redwood City Master Plan, an Accessory Dwelling Unit Showcase, and Historic Preservation Ordinance;
• Investigating opportunities for increasing public involvement in Planning Division activities;
• Investigating opportunities for new methods of communicating with the public using social media, videos, and newsletters
• Preparing updates to documents, forms, handouts and other materials;
• Other appropriate tasks as needed.

About the Position: The Planning Department is seeking two interns who are interested in learning about open space conservation and planning for ecologically sensitive recreation. Their responsibilities may include researching and compiling project information, supporting with community and stakeholder engagement, assisting with environmental review and documentation, researching new programs and initiatives, conducting field surveys and data collection, and using computer-based systems such as GIS, Microsoft Excel and Adobe Illustrator for analysis of data and preparation of documents regarding Midpen lands and facilities. The interns will work as a team and individually on assignments, including opportunities for field work to gain experience in data collection techniques and tools and on-the-job training in planning research, analysis, and written communication.  The expected start date for the interns is on or after July 8, 2024. We have limited flexibility to change the start date.

Basic Requirements: Internships are open to applications from current students or recent graduates (within the last 12 months). Successful candidates will have a background in the natural sciences, park/open space management, land use/environmental planning, GIS/geography, biology, ecology, or another related field; and experience with field data collection techniques. This internship requires strong organizational and analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently and with a team. Experience with MS Outlook, MS Word and Excel, ArcGIS software, GPS equipment, Microsoft Excel, and Apple iPads is desired, and familiarity with Midpen preserves/trails as well as local flora, fauna, and natural history are a plus.   Possession of or ability to obtain a valid California driver’s license is required. Must possess the ability to lift, carry, push and pull materials and objects weighing up to 25 pounds.

Working Conditions: This position will report to the Planning Department at the Administrative Office in Los Altos, California.  Midpen offers a hybrid office/telecommute work environment for this position, which will be divided between onsite work, field visits, and limited home office work.  Fieldwork is conducted in rural or mountainous Midpen open space areas, which may involve working alone or with another intern in wildland areas, traversing rough difficult terrain sometimes with poison oak and dense vegetation, and carrying equipment weighing up to 25 pounds. This is a temporary position working 20 – 40 hours per week, which will extend up to a total of 950 hours over a 6-9 month period. This is a non-benefited position.

THE POSITION:  The City of San Mateo’s Community Development Department has an opportunity for an intern to work on a number of projects. The Department, which has about 55 full time employees, includes the Building, Housing, Planning, Code Enforcement, & Business/Admin Divisions. The Management Analyst Intern will primarily support the Housing and Business/Admin Divisions and receive primary supervision from the Department’s Business Manager and Housing Manager, and project specific direction from the supervisor/manager primarily responsible for each specific project. The duration and start date of the internship are flexible, though summer interns typically start between mid-May and Mid-June. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  
•    BA/BS or Masters Candidate 
•    Strong analytical, writing and verbal skills; effective written and oral communication

DUTIES: The primary projects will most likely include the following: 
•    Market Research / Data Analysis. Support the research and help prepare findings report on fee schedules across multiple jurisdictions to help the Business Manager prepare for the 2025 comprehensive fee study. 
•    Contracts / Grant Administration. Support the Housing Division Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Permanent Local Housing Allocation (PLHA) administration of contracts and grant funds for nonprofit recipients.
•    Housing Element Compliance / Certification. Support the Housing Division with implementation of Housing Element policies and programs.
•    Community Relations Commission Support. Support the Community Relations Commission, under the direction of the commission liaison, in coordinating commission meeting, preparing documents for commission review, and preparing commission documents for approval and filing with the City Clerk.

In addition, the intern may work on a variety of other projects to support Community Development Department special projects and operations, depending upon need, availability and interest.

The City of Lincoln is accepting applications for a Seasonal Maintenance Worker I in the Solid Waste Division of the Public Works Department.

This position is limited to 999 hours per fiscal year and is unbenefited. This position may become a regular/full-time position, dependent upon the future needs of the department.

Under general supervision, the incumbent learns to, and performs the full array of duties assigned to classes in the Maintenance Worker series including maintenance, construction and equipment operation work and performs other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Maintenance Worker I is the entry level class responsible for a wide variety of maintenance and construction tasks.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED

The Maintenance Worker I receives general supervision from a Public Works Supervisor or designee. Incumbents of this class do not routinely exercise supervision.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Include but are not limited to the following:

• Solid Waste: Operates a variety of collection vehicles and equipment including front, rear and side loaders in the collection and transportation of residential and commercial refuse; drives to landfill site when vehicle is full and unloads material; evaluates and updates assigned routes; cleans, maintains and inspects assigned vehicles; maintains daily logs.
• Performs maintenance, repair, construction, and  equipment operation, and refuse collection. 
• Demonstrates a full understanding of applicable policies, procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; responds to questions and concerns from the general public; provides information as is appropriate and resolves public service complaints.

• Establishes positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, state/local agencies, City management and staff, and the public.

KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES/SKILLS

PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties. The position also requires both near and far vision when inspecting work and operating assigned equipment. The need to lift, carry and push tools, equipment and supplies weighing 25 pounds or more is also required. Additionally, the incumbent in this outdoor position works in all weather conditions including wet, hot and cold. The incumbent may use cleaning and lubricating chemicals, pesticides or herbicides which may expose the employee to fumes, dust and air contaminants. The nature of the work also requires the incumbent to climb ladders, use power and noise producing tools and equipment, operate hydraulic aerial devices, drive motorized vehicles and heavy equipment, work in heavy vehicle traffic conditions and often work with constant interruptions.

Under general supervision, a Police Officer is responsible for the performance of law enforcement duties to protect life and property in accordance with applicable laws, to carry out special assignments as necessary, and other related duties as assigned. A wide variety of assignments are available which include Patrol, Traffic, Narcotics, Detectives, Off-Road and Surface Street Motorcycle Patrol, Bike Patrol, Special Weapons Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Canine, Background Investigations, School Liaison, Gang Suppression, Special Enforcement Section and Intelligence.

This position participates in a 4/10 work schedule. Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements:

Candidates must have completed a California P.O.S.T. Certified Police Academy. Must be 21 years of age as of the appointment date, high school graduate or G.E.D., (as recognized by the U.S. Department of Education), and U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien who is eligible and has applied for citizenship.

Out-of-State Candidates:

The California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) will conduct an evaluation of all out-of-state training. POST is the sole authority on applicable training and determines whether the candidate must attend an abbreviated academy, or a regular police academy. If an academy is required, the candidate will be hired as a Police Officer Trainee. Upon completion of the academy, promotion will be made to Police Officer.

Selection Process:

All qualified applicants will be invited to appear before an Oral Appraisal Board. Applicants passing the Oral Board examination will be placed on the eligibility list based on their Oral Appraisal Board rankings. Prospective employees will be required to pass a physical agility examination and undergo a thorough background investigation including a medical, psychological, polygraph and drug/alcohol screening.
