The City of Lafayette is seeking a well-seasoned, Senior Civil Engineer to play a key role in our Engineering and Public Works Department. The ideal candidate for this role is comfortable with designing, managing and inspecting capital improvement projects; presenting and explaining projects to members of the public, elected officials and appointed officials; and balancing office work with hands-on field work. Currently, this position directly reports to the Engineering Services Manager. In the future, the Senior Civil Engineer may supervise junior department members. Ideal Candidate

What You’ll Do

  • Plans, designs, and inspects complex civil engineering construction projects.
  • Reviews construction plans to verify compliance with City, State, Federal, and/or industry standards and requirements for public works infrastructure.
  • Performs development review.
  • Reviews and inspects work to preserve public safety and ensure conformance with plans and specifications.
  • Reviews engineering calculations and participates in pre-design, construction, and utility coordination meetings.
  • Provides construction administration, public relations, management, and inspection of construction projects.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints.
  • Hosts public meetings for City Council-approved capital improvement projects.
  • Writes staff reports and presents to commissions, committees and the City Council.
  • Attends County Clean Water Program meetings and assists in the development of required reports and documents to ensure the City’s compliance with the stormwater regional discharge permit.
  • May provide supervisory oversight to the Public Works Inspector positions.
  • May assist in the management of the Code Enforcement Department.

What You Bring

  • Registration as a Professional Civil Engineer with 8+ years’ of experience designing, managing and inspecting capital improvement projects.
  • Ability to perform required engineering design work in AutoCad.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering design standards and principles including ADA compliance.
  • Comfortable working outside on construction sites as well as in the office.
  • High level of comfort with Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new systems quickly and independently.
  • A collaborative solution-oriented approach to problem solving.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to learn new skills independently.

Compensation & Schedule

  • This is an exempt, salaried position with a hiring salary range of $132,574-$192,330 annually DOE and not eligible for overtime.
  • This position typically works 8AM-5PM, Monday through Friday. However, shifts in schedule may be accommodated per supervisor’s approval. This position may be required to work more than 8 hours and may have occasional weekend or evening/night work (i.e. city council meetings, road pavement projects, etc.).
  • Hybrid work schedule may be possible during specific work seasons per supervisor’s approval.
