The City of Thousand Oaks is pleased to announce an excellent career opportunity within the Community Development Department for the position of Community Development Technician I/II in the Planning Division.
We are seeking a highly motivated, customer-focused professional who demonstrates confidence, sound judgment, and a high level of professionalism in addressing a variety of planning-related inquiries and tasks.
The Community Development Technician I/II will be responsible for assisting customers both virtually and in-person, responding to phone and email inquiries, processing basic entitlements and permits for residential and non-residential projects, facilitating the virtual processing of Planning Entitlement submissions, and providing accurate information regarding City codes, policies, standards, and procedures.
The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication skills, a commitment to delivering superior customer service, use sound judgment, and the ability to remain focused in a dynamic work environment. A professional demeanor and the ability to represent the City effectively in all interactions with the public and internal teams are essential for success in this role.
Primary responsibilities:
- Respond to inquiries in person at the public counter and electronically related to planning processes
- Process a variety of residential and nonresidential entitlements and permit types
- Assist customers in navigating and utilizing the City’s online permitting systems
- Review building applications, plans, and related materials required for permit issuance or plan check submittal
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate should possess:
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interface with the public and colleagues
- Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task
- Basic knowledge of the permitting process for construction
- Knowledge of land use planning and practices
- Basic ability to interpret architectural plans
- Attentiveness to detail and accuracy
- Experience with Microsoft Programs and permit systems.
- Works well in a team environment
- Collaborates with others to improve processes and procedures while maintaining consistency
- Involves other divisions and outside agencies for overall process improvement
- A minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent, a college degree is preferred
- CD Tech I: One year of technical experience
- CD Tech II: Two years of responsible paraprofessional experience
- A valid Class C California driver’s license
