Join San Bruno Public Works, as a part-time, temporary Maintenance Assistant!
The San Bruno Public Works Department is committed to delivering responsive, professional, and efficient services that maintain and enhance the City’s infrastructure. With responsibility over streets, storm drains, wastewater collection, water distribution, public facilities, and engineering, the department is committed to providing responsive, high-quality service, and plays a vital role in keeping the city safe, clean, and functional.
Under immediate supervision, part-time maintenance assistants perform a range of unskilled and semiskilled tasks that support the day-to-day upkeep of the City’s infrastructure. This is a part-time, temporary position with the Public Works Department (18-20 hours per week) to support the City’s “Cleanup San Bruno” initiative.
Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:
- Cleans and removes debris and litter from parking lots, streets, gutters, storm drains, catch basins, and sidewalks, by shoveling, raking, sweeping, and picking up debris.
- Removal and loading of illegal dumping such as tires, mattresses, and furniture.
- Assists in loading, transporting, and unloading equipment, materials, debris, and other heavy objects related to maintenance.
- Operates a City vehicle and power tools necessary to complete maintenance for the above assigned areas.
- Assists with fire hydrant flushing program.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education, experience, and training that would provide the best qualified candidates. Applicants should have the ability to read, write and carry out oral and written directions. Applicants should also have the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Ideal candidates will have knowledge of proper use and care of common hand tools, skills performing manual work, and lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds. Must be able to pass a pre-employment physical and drug test.
Special Requirements:
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license with good driving record (DMV printout required).
In addition, the ideal candidate possesses a positive attitude and maintain a successful track record the following:
- Experience working in a maintenance field with knowledge of tools.
- Conveying information and ideas clearly and concisely that helps the understanding and retaining of the message; listening actively to others.
- Working cooperatively with others to help a team or work group achieve its goals.
- Assimilating and applying new job-related information in a timely manner.
- Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job; accurately checking processes and tasks; being watchful over a period of time.

What happens next?
