If so, come join the Town of Los Altos Hills Public Works Department as our next Engineering Technician! In this role, you’ll support engineers and Town staff in delivering vital infrastructure projects and services that directly impact the community.
As an Engineering Technician, you will provide a variety of technical and paraprofessional support to the Public Works Department. Your work will span research, drafting, inspections, site investigations, mapping, permit processing, and data management. You’ll be an essential part of the team that delivers public infrastructure projects and services to the residents of Los Altos Hills.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform technical and paraprofessional engineering work related to land development review, encroachment permits, capital improvements, infrastructure design, environmental/regulatory compliance, and field inspection services
Assist in preparing designs, plans, and specifications for public works projects such as streets, storm drains, sanitary sewer lines, and other projects, which may involve data collection and analysis, field surveys, performing related calculations, drafting, and cost estimates.
Perform limited project and construction management services for various projects.
Update and maintain Public Works design and construction standards.
Investigate and resolve work orders, field problems, and complaints from property owners, contractors, and utility providers; and recommend and implement corrective actions.
Review and process encroachment permits; and provide customer service at the public counter, by phone, email, and virtual platforms.
Provide courteous and professional assistance at the public counter, by phone, email, and virtual platforms, and answer questions about building permits and the permit process.
Regularly update the Public Works website as directed.
Prepare CAD drawings and update GIS mapping databases.
Prepare technical reports, presentations, and visual materials.
Inspect public works construction and permit-related activities; prepare field notes; and maintain accurate field inspection reports.
Conduct plan checks for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable codes, Town standards, and best practices
Respond to service requests and coordinate with team members to ensure timely and efficient project delivery.
Record documents with the County and maintain project and permit database.
Participate in training related to job duties and professional development.
Perform other related duties as assigned
Ideal Candidate
The Town is seeking a motivated, team-oriented professional who can balance technical expertise with strong communication and customer service skills. The ideal candidate will:
Possess a high school diploma or equivalent (required).
Bring at least two years of experience in civil engineering, drafting, public works inspection, or a related field. Completion of college-level coursework in civil engineering or a related field is highly desirable and may substitute for required experience on a year-for-year basis.
Be comfortable using AutoCAD, GIS, and related software to prepare plans, update mapping databases, and support project delivery.
Have a solid knowledge of civil engineering principles, surveying practices, construction methods, and applicable federal, state, and local codes and regulations related to public works.
Understand drafting practices, plan reading, and construction standards, and apply mathematical and engineering principles to solve technical problems.
Be capable of working both independently and collaboratively in a small team environment, with the ability to learn from and take direction from engineering staff.
Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills, the ability to prepare cost estimates and reports, and the capacity to explain technical information clearly to residents, contractors, and staff.
Communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing, and provide professional, courteous customer service at the counter, by phone, and through virtual platforms.
Build and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, contractors, utility providers, and the public.
Hold a valid California Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record.

- CalPERS Retirement
- New employees with no prior CalPERS service or have a break in CalPERS service of 6 months or more: 2% @ 62. Employees are required by law to pay 50% of the normal cost, or 6.5%.
- New employees who are classic CalPERS member and did not have a break in service for more than 6 months: 2% @ 60. Employees are responsible for CalPERS member contribution, currenlty set at 7.0%.
- Health Insurance – Town provides a generous flexible spending allowance to employees at a rate that currently covers up to the Kaiser premium cost.
