Job Description
The City of San Carlos is offering one part-time, 20-hour per week, non-benefited, in-person summer internship in the City Manager’s Office. The position begins in May-June 2026 and ends in August-September 2026 (depending on school schedule of selected candidate). This position is entirely in-person and will take place on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Video Production Internship
The City of San Carlos City Manager’s Office is seeking a creative and motivated Video Production Intern who is passionate about digital storytelling and public service. This role offers hands-on experience producing engaging video content that helps inform and connect the community.
Assignments may include creating social media shorts, YouTube videos, staff and community interviews, event and promotional videos, educational content, and other video-related projects. The intern will also support citywide communications efforts, including content creation and social media, conduct research on a variety of topics, and assist with special projects. The position will serve as a temporary staff member and will receive overall work direction from the Management Analyst in the City Manager’s Office with general oversight from the Assistant City Manager.
The primary goal of the City’s Internship Program is to provide a college student, recent college graduate, graduate student, or recent graduate school graduate an opportunity to apply their academic training to, and learn more about, the various functions of municipal government. This paid internship offers hands-on experience in the City Manager’s Office, where the intern will develop professional skills, collaborate with City departments and community partners, and create content that makes a visible impact across the City’s communication channels.
Ideal Candidate
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years study in film, media studies, communications, public relations, public administration, political science, public policy, or related field;
- Knowledge of, or interest in learning, principles and practices of a City organization;
- Experience in video creation and editing with iPhone, CapCut, Canva, Adobe Premier, and/or YouTube;
- Familiarity with content creation on social media channels;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Detail-oriented;
- Effective interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and the public;
- Self-motivated;
- Reliable and punctual;
- Ability to lift and move up to 40 pounds.
Ideal Candidate
This is an entry-level intern position for a current undergraduate/graduate college student or very recent college/graduate school graduate (six months post-grad) looking for a future career in the public sector. The candidate must have excellent communication skills (oral and written), strong organizational skills, and the ability to work independently with little supervision. Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of Microsoft software, including Word and Excel, are necessary. General video production, graphic design, and digital communications skills highly preferred.
