Description

This position is temporary / part-time and is limited to a maximum of 130 hours per month AND 960 hours per fiscal year. Typical work schedule will be three 8-hour shifts per week, excluding weekends and evenings.


THE POSITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work involving the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City's traffic signs and markings.  The purpose of this recruitment is to fill a current temporary/part-time vacancy in our Public Works Department. Candidates who do not currently meet the minimum qualifications for the Signs and Markings Technician I position may be considered for an Intern position instead.


IDEAL CANDIDATE
The Ideal Candidate will have experience with equipment, materials and methods utilized in general construction, maintenance, and repair of traffic signs and markings. This individual will be able to work independently with limited supervision, and make sound decisions.  It is important that this person can follow directions properly, be flexible, communicate clearly and have a positive, professional attitude.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Paint, install, and maintain city street signs, striping and reflective markers. Design and manufacture street name signs, City facility signs, and regulatory signs. Interpret and apply relevant codes, rules, and regulations as specified in the Traffic Control Handbook, Caltrans Specifications and California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Provide general information to the public, other city departments, and vendors pertaining to area of assignment; investigate and respond to citizen inquiries and complaints regarding area of assignment. Comply with the policies and procedures in the Department Illness and Injury Prevention Program; utilize proper safety precautions and set a positive example for others. Regular, predictable, consistent and timely attendance is an essential function of the position. Employee must be present to work on facilities and equipment impacting the public’s health and safety.


OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Assist in the planning and layout of traffic control devices including safe work zones. Be aware of the Underground Service Alerts (USA) guidelines.  Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on assigned equipment such as compressors, paint sprayers, thermal applicators and stencils. Install new or modified signing and/or striping as directed by Senior Signs and Marking Technician. Requisition and purchase materials and supplies; assist in maintaining expenditure records for materials and services; maintain records and prepare reports regarding work performed. Prepare detailed designs for installation of traffic control devices. Assist in the training of assigned crew members. Work cooperatively with others. Drive vehicles and equipment as required. Perform related duties as assigned. Meet stand-by requirements and serve in a stand-by status after working hours. Respond to emergency callouts as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS
Signs and Markings Technician I

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Specialized coursework in signs and markings or related field is desired.

Experience: One (1) year of experience performing duties in general construction or maintenance work related to signs and markings. 

License or Certificates: Must acquire and be able to retain a valid Class B California Driver's License with Tank and Air Brake Endorsement, Signs and Markings Specialist I and Work Zone Safety certifications from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA), First Aid, CPR, ICS 100 and NIMS 700 certifications prior to permanent appointment.

$17.00 - $21.00 per hour

 

BENEFITS
All of these positions are temporary part-time.  Temporary employees work no more than 130 hours per month AND no more than 960 hours in a Fiscal Year. 

The pay cycle is bi-weekly. With the exception of worker's compensation coverage and sick leave accrual, no other benefits compensations are provided. Employees must contribute 1.45% of salary to Medicare and 7.5% to a retirement plan in accordance with Federal Law.
