The Novato Sanitary District is seeking a highly motivated, and goal-driven individual to join our Collection System team as a Collection System Worker (CSW). The District will hire at the level of CSW I or CSW II depending on skills, certifications and licenses held by candidates in the pool of qualified applicants. 

The CSW performs a wide variety of tasks associated with the maintenance of wastewater collection and reclamation systems, including inspection, cleaning, maintenance, and repairs on lines, pump stations, and treatment facilities. The successful CSW I candidate will possess experience in general maintenance tasks, including the safe and effective operation of a variety of hand and power tools and equipment. Possession of a commercial driver's license is highly desirable. Experience working with sewer cleaning trucks and equipment is also a plus. The successful CSW II candidate will have three or more years of experience in collection system maintenance. Experience in pump station maintenance is highly desirable.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

A Collection System Worker will have any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the job.

  • A Collection System Worker I will have a high school diploma or equivalent, as well as some basic work experience in general maintenance operations.
  • Collection System Worker II will have a high school diploma or equivalent, experience in general maintenance operations, and at least one year of experience doing work similar to that of a Collection Systems Worker I at the Novato Sanitary District.

Other Qualifications

A Collection System Worker must also:

  • Live within a thirty-minute driving radius from the Treatment Plant for responding to after hours call-outs, if required.
  • Possess, or obtain within the first six months of employment, a Class B driver's license (requires passing an initial and random drug testing).
  • Be eligible to work in the United States under appropriate federal regulations.
  • Successfully complete a work capacity test and medical examination administered by a licensed medical doctor, selected and paid by the District, to determine physical fitness for the job.

License and Certifications

Please note that license/certificate requirements will vary according to a position’s assignments.  A position’s assignments are used to determine applicable requirements.

Applicants must possess a valid California motor vehicle driver's license and a good driving record consistent with requirements established by the District.

Employee must obtain a Class B license with air brake and tank endorsement within the first 6 months of employment. Failure to obtain a Class B License and maintain an acceptable driving record shall be cause for discipline, up to and including dismissal. Class A license within first six months may be required for some positions.

Employee must obtain First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate within six months of employment.

Possession of a Grade I Wastewater Collection System Certificate issued by the California Water Environment Association or the American Water Works Association is highly desirable.

The Novato Sanitary District provides wastewater collection, treatment, recycling, reclamation, and disposal to 60,000 residents and businesses in City of Novato and surrounding areas of Marin County. It also administers solid waste services and has partnered with Recology for garbage and recycling collection. The District covers approximately 34 square miles and owns approximately 250 miles of sewers, 40 pump stations, a state-of-the-art and award-winning wastewater treatment plant, and an approximately 800-acre reclamation facility.

Leave Benefits

  • District provides paid vacation, accrued at 6.67 hours per month for the first three years, increasing thereafter in accordance with the District's Personnel Rules and Regulations,
    • Note: vacation leave may not be used until completion of at least six months of continuous service with the District
  • Paid Sick Leave—96 hours per year, accrued monthly
  • 11 paid holidays per year, plus 2 floating holidays after a year of service
  • Compensatory Time Off—Employees may elect up to 80 hours of compensatory time off per year as compensation for overtime.

  • CalPERS membership:
    • “Classic” (Pre-2013)—2% @ 60, 36-month formula
    • New or “PEPRA” (1/1/2013 and after)—2% @ 62, 36-month formula
  • Retirement Health Savings Account—District contributes 1.5% of base salary
  • 457(b) and Roth 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plans
