Mechanic I - $74,859.20 - $91,852.80
Mechanic II - $86,091.20 - $105,664
Work Schedule: M – F 7:00 – 3:30 (With occasional overtime)
Introduction
The City of San Bruno seeks a skilled Mechanic I/II to keep our diverse fleet of Police, Public Works, and light-duty fleet ready to serve the community. This flexibly staffed position lets you join at the entry (Mechanic I) or journey (Mechanic II) level and grow your career in a collaborative, service-oriented environment.
About the Department
The Central Garage is part of the Public Works Maintenance & Operations Division. Our three-bay facility maintains more than 260 units—including patrol vehicles, Class 5 and above apparatus, newly integrated electric vehicles, heavy equipment, generators, and small engines to ensure City operations can deliver essential services 24/7.
About the Role
As a Mechanic I/II, you will:
- Planned and carried out preventive maintenance schedules for all city vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose and repair gasoline, diesel, and alternative-fuel engines; hydraulic, electrical, fuel, ignition, exhaust, and brake systems.
- Operate computerized diagnostic instruments plus a full range of hand, air, and electric tools.
- Maintain concise and clear repair records in our repair management software.
- Perform welding, metal fabrication, tire work, and minor body repairs.
- Provide emergency field assistance and respond to critical fleet issues on a 24-hour standby.
- (Mechanic II only) Lead and review the work of assigned staff and manage garage inventory, purchasing, and repair/maintenance planning

Minimum Qualifications & Certifications
- Education - Associate degree (or equivalent coursework) in automotive technology, mechanics, maintenance management, or related field
- Experience
- Mechanic I - 2 years progressively responsible automotive diagnosis & repair
- Mechanic II - 4 years progressively responsible automotive diagnosis & repair
- License - Valid CA Class B driver’s license or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire
- Certifications
- Mechanic I - ASE certifications are preferred; Master Mechanic is highly desirable
- Mechanic II - similar to Mechanic I, plus demonstrated journey-level competency.
