GENERAL INFO
Under general supervision, the Lifeguard/Swim Instructor I/II performs routine public contact and safety work in serving as a pool lifeguard. They also provide essential support to recreation programs and services by performing custodial tasks, event setup and teardown, program support, and minor maintenance duties relating to aquatics. This temporary, parttime position requires working up to 20 hours per week. The role involves ensuring the health and safety of aquatic patrons, facilities are clean, safe, and operational while delivering excellent customer service. Performs other duties as assigned.
UNIVERSAL POSITION DUTIES (Applicable to all roles; Illustrative Purposes Only)
Monitor the swimming pool and enforce safety regulations.
Assist with aquatics programs, special events, and facility upkeep.
Test and maintain pool water chemistry.
Set up and tear down for classes, programs, and events.
Lift and move up to 50 pounds regularly, and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
Work outdoors in sun, rain, or wind as needed.
POSITION-SPECIFIC DUTIES
LIFEGUARD (Illustrative Purposes Only)
Maintain a "rescue-ready" posture and scan assigned zones for drowning emergencies.
Work in a rotation with other lifeguards across indoor and outdoor stations.
Assist with facility operations, special events, and customer service.
Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings.
Perform light cleaning and maintenance tasks to ensure facility safety.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Age: 15
Education: High school diploma or GED not required.
Certifications:
American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification (or ability to obtain).
First Aid & CPR Certification.
SWIM INSTRUCTOR (Illustrative Purposes Only)
Teach American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim lessons following provided lesson plans.
Maintain open communication with parents and participants.
Assist with emergency responses and pool safety as trained.
Attend weekly and monthly safety trainings.
Perform routine cleaning and maintenance to ensure facility upkeep.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Age: 15
Education: High school diploma or GED not required.
Skills: Swimming proficiency at American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim Level 4.
Preferred Certification: Water Safety Instructor.
LIFEGUARD II - POOL MANAGER (Illustrative Purposes Only)
Supervise lifeguards and enforce safety procedures.
Conduct lifeguard rotations and monitor staff performance.
Ensure staff maintain a “rescue-ready” posture and remain alert while on duty.
Assist in planning and leading weekly and monthly safety trainings.
Monitor pool chemicals and water quality.
Open, close, and secure facility as needed.
Provide customer service, event support, and light facility maintenance.
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum Age: 18
Experience: At least 6 months of experience as a lifeguard.
Preferred Certification: American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Outdoor environment with exposure to sun, wind, and pool chemicals.
Variable hours, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
Ability to work in loud or quiet environments depending on location.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED
Pool maintenance equipment, hand tools, and cleaning supplies.
Radios and phones for communication.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Frequent swimming, walking, sitting, and lifting.
Regularly lift/move 25 lbs, occasionally over 100 lbs.
Prolonged standing, climbing, and reaching.
