Are you a detail-oriented accounting professional who wants your work to make an impact in the community? The City of San Bruno is seeking a skilled and motivated Accountant to join our collaborative and service-driven Administrative Services team!
About the Role
This is more than a traditional accounting role — it’s an opportunity to help steward public resources, strengthen financial integrity, and support the programs and services that directly benefit our residents. As an Accountant with the City, you will perform technical and administrative accounting work and apply accounting principles and methods to maintaining fiscal records and systems of the City.
The current vacancy will have a focus on payroll activities. Other duties may include projects such as internal audit and control, financial analysis, budget preparation, purchasing, fixed assets, reconciliation of accounting records, special projects, and related accounting work.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented and highly knowledgeable accounting professional with substantial experience in payroll administration within a governmental or public agency setting. You possess a thorough understanding of payroll laws, regulations, reporting requirements, retirement reporting, and internal controls, and demonstrate the ability to ensure accurate and timely processing of complex payroll transactions. You exercise strong analytical judgment, maintain strict confidentiality, ensure compliance with applicable laws and MOU provisions, and provide responsive, professional service to employees, departments, and external agencies while safeguarding the City’s financial integrity.

Typical Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a degree in accounting, finance, business or public administration, or a closely related field, plus three (3) years of professional accounting or municipal finance experience. Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is currently $96,917 to $118,929. This position is scheduled to receive a general wage increase in January 2027 and January 2028 in accordance with the Teamsters Local 350, IBT Mid-Management Unit Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). This is a represented position.
The City is proud to offer a competitive total compensation package with the following highlights:
- Wellness-focused schedule and paid time off (PTO) program
- 4-day workweek (Monday through Thursday, 9-hours per day) with a 3-day weekend every week.
- Approximately 3 to 5 weeks of vacation per year, dependent on years of service, with the option to cash out up to 2 weeks per year.
- Additional 80 hours of paid time off (Management Leave) annually, with the annual option to cash out those hours.
- Comprehensive medical and dental plan with choice of HMO or PPO program for employee and eligible dependents.
- Defined benefit retirement program through CalPERS, with benefit dependent membership status (Classic-2.7%@55 or New/PEPRA-2.0%@62). More information is available online at CalPERS.

Note:
- Remote work is not available for this position.
- Later this year the standard work week will transition to four (4) nine (9) hour days for a full-time schedule of 36 hours per week with no impact on annual salary.
