About the Position

The San Carlos Recreation Department is looking for seasonal summer Recreation Leaders who are responsible, energetic, and enjoy working outdoors with children in a fun and positive atmosphere.

 

Recreation Leader positions are fun!  The City works with applicant’s interests and strengths to place them in the appropriate Recreation Leader opening.

 

The Recreation Leader I classification is the entry-level position in the Recreation Leader Series. The Recreation Leader II classification is the second-level position in the Recreation Leader Series. Positions in this part-time classification perform routine, basic work under direct supervision, in the planning and conducting of a wide variety of recreation activities. Receives supervision from a Recreation Department staff member; may work under functional supervision of a Recreation Leader II or Program Coordinator as assigned.

 

Work schedule: Seasonal Recreation Leaders are assigned to the Summer Day Camp and Youth Center programs working with children ages 4 -12 years. This summer’s camp program runs from June 15 - August 14, 2026. Training for Recreation Leader I & II will take place the week of June 8, 2026 (mandatory in-service training). Recreation Leaders must be able to work during this time period for at least 8 of the 10 weeks and have the ability to plan and conduct exciting youth recreation activities.

 

Positions in this seasonal classification perform routine, basic work under direct supervision, in the planning and conducting of a wide variety of recreation activities. Positions require a commitment of 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Shifts may vary based on camp needs.

 

Essential Duties

 

As a Recreation Leader for San Carlos Parks and Recreation you will:

 

  • Be a part of a motivated, enthusiastic, and responsible team focused on making a difference in the community.
  • Learn valuable leadership skills with monthly professional development and training opportunities.
  • Assist in Community Events including, Hometown Days, Music in the Park, Art and Wine Faire, and Movie Nights.

 

As a Recreation Leader working Summer Camp, you will help implement and perform some of the following activities:

 

Summer Camps

  • Daily enrichment and recreational activities.
  • Directing program participants and managing behavior as appropriate.
  • Ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for youth participants.
  • Supervision and facilitation of Youth Center special events and participants.
  • Site maintenance duties and inspection of recreational equipment.

 

We are offering two types of Summer Camps, Adventure Camp for children ages 4 to 12, and Sports Camps (Flag Football, Volleyball, Softball, Baseball, and Multi-Sport) for ages 5-12.

 

The following dates are tentative and subject to change based on the needs of the City:

Hourly Salary Range (effective January 12, 2026)

Recreation Leader I: $19.34 - $20.30

Recreation Leader II: $21.32 - $25.91

• Provide excellent customer service to families by communicating with them daily about their camper’s experience.

• Provide thoughtful and constructive mentorship to volunteer participants.

• Performs site maintenance duties.

 

Knowledge of basic City recreation programming.

 

Ability and skills to organize people and activities; energetically perform job duties; comprehend and follow brief oral and written instructions; assist willingly as needed. Establish, maintain and foster cooperative working relations with others contacted in the course of work.

 

Recreation Leader II

 

•   Works directly with the public.

•   Assists with summer program planning and implementation.

•   Serves as site or program supervisor while supervising program participants.

•  Directs program participants as appropriate, maintaining discipline and control in a fast-paced environment.

• Provide leadership, energy and camp spirit for campers, constantly assessing group dynamics and the needs of individual campers.

• Provide excellent customer service to families by communicating with them daily about their camper’s experience.

 

Knowledge of basic City recreation programming; techniques of working effectively with adults, children, including individuals who have special needs as related to recreation programs.

 

Ability and skills to organize people and activities; energetically perform job duties; comprehend and follow brief oral and written instructions; assist willingly as needed.  Implement program plans; work with minimal supervision. Establish, maintain and foster cooperative working relations with others contacted in the course of work.

 

Education and Training

Recreation Leader I

Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of this classification. A typical qualifying background would be prior supervisory and/or leadership experience working with adults or children in a large group.

 

Recreation Leader II

Sufficient education and experience to satisfactorily perform the duties of this classification. A typical qualifying background would be graduation from high school, and 500 hours experience as either a Recreation Leader I at the City of San Carlos or 500 hours at an equivalent classification in another municipality, or equivalent experience in a comparable setting.

 

Special Requirements

Must be at least 16 years of age.  Speak clearly and understandably; ability and dexterity to run, jump and climb; lift and move equipment, such as tables and chairs; hear alarms, bells, and voices; to reach. Willingness and ability to work flexible, part-time hours, including evenings and weekends.

 

Licenses and Certifications

Possession of an appropriate California driver's license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles is desired.
