San Francisco International Airport's (SFO) Career Advance Internships are for motivated individuals looking to gain valuable work experience building their skills while playing a vital role in operations at SFO. Career Advance Interns work in one of many offices at the airport supported by an SFO Mentor who will guide and develop through daily tasks and larger-scale projects. Interns are also supported by the Talent Mobility Team and given an opportunity to attend tours, meet and greet with Airport leadership, and other workshops and events aimed at professional development.

 

  1. Administrative Support– As an Administrative Support Intern, you will gain valuable experience providing a broad range of administrative and operational support across the department. This role offers hands-on exposure to office administration, customer service, event coordination, program support, and special projects in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The intern will contribute to daily operations such as front desk coverage, greeting and assisting visitors, responding to inquiries, scheduling, and document preparation, while also supporting workshops, trainings, outreach activities, and division-wide initiatives. This position provides an opportunity to strengthen skills in communication, organization, customer engagement, and professional workplace practices, preparing you for future roles in administration, customer service, and program coordination.
  2. Talent Development – As a Talent Development Intern, you will support the Talent Development team in helping deliver high-quality trainings and development initiatives that strengthen the Airport’s workforce. This role focuses on assisting team members with workshop coordination, program logistics, and maintaining digital learning systems and resources. In addition to supporting day-to-day operations, you will also have opportunities to improve or create new processes and initiatives that enhance employee learning, engagement, and development. This internship provides exposure to training coordination, program improvement, and organizational development, building valuable skills for future roles in talent development and workplace learning.
  3. Talent Acquisition / Recruitment – As a Talent Acquisition Intern, you will support the recruitment team in strengthening the candidate experience and ensuring a smooth hiring process for Airport roles. This position involves assisting with outreach and communication, participating in recruitment events, and engaging with candidates throughout the City and County of San Francisco’s hiring process. You will also collaborate with educational institutions and community partners to promote career opportunities at SFO and help build a strong pipeline of talent. This internship provides practical experience in recruitment coordination, candidate engagement, and workforce development, equipping you for future careers in talent acquisition and talent pipeline development.
  4. Security Access Office (SAO) – As a Security Access Office Intern, you will support the team responsible for issuing ID badges, keys, and permits that are essential to maintaining the Airport’s secure operations. This role places a strong emphasis on customer service, as you will assist employees and stakeholders with access needs while also supporting document processing, audits, and data entry to ensure accurate records. The Security Access Office is a critical part of Airport operations, and this internship offers direct exposure to both service delivery and operational processes. You will gain practical experience in customer engagement, access control, and administrative support, preparing you for future careers in aviation security as well as other professional administrative roles.
  5. Landside Operations – Transit Programs – As a Transit Programs Intern, you will contribute to SFO’s Go>SFO Shuttle service and support major transit expansion projects that connect Airport employees and partners to the workplace. This role involves assisting with service planning, scheduling, marketing, ridership analysis, and supporting the rollout of electric bus infrastructure. You will also gain experience working on initiatives that enhance sustainable commuting options and improve access to the Airport community. This internship provides exposure to transportation planning, program coordination, and sustainable transit operations, preparing you for future careers in urban planning, transportation management, and mobility program development.
  6. Environmental Operations & Sustainability – As an Environmental Operations & Sustainability Intern, you will support initiatives that advance SFO’s commitment to environmental leadership and our 2030 sustainability goals. This role includes assisting with programs that address water conservation, waste diversion, emissions reduction, and pollution prevention. You may participate in zero waste audits, contribute to staff trainings, and support environmental outreach efforts that engage the Airport community. This internship provides hands-on experience in sustainability program support, data analysis, and environmental education, preparing you for future careers in environmental management, sustainability planning, and green operations.

 

Internship Details

  • Schedule: 24-32 hours per week, Monday-Friday between 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Duration: 12 months

 

How to Qualify

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a high school degree; AND
  2. Completion of 90 semester units or 135 quarter units from an accredited college or university by the appointment date.

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams for communication and collaboration.
  • Interest in public service, aviation, or professional development.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Eagerness to learn and take initiative on projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, staff, and external stakeholders, exercising professionalism and sound judgment.
