Description

The County of San Mateo's Department of Public Works is seeking applications for the position of Electrician

 

Electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems and equipment in and around County buildings. This position requires the ability to work independently in different locations with minimal supervision. While much of the work is performed independently, the Construction Services section is characterized by a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.


Construction Services Section
Construction Services offers specialized crafts services that go beyond routine maintenance provided by the Facilities Operations and Maintenance section. We partner with the County and Cities to deliver carpentry, graffiti abatement, and lighting district services. Our skilled team, including craftsmen, maintenance workers, utility workers, and office support staff, handles diverse tasks from remodels to new construction projects. Trades represented include electrical, plumbing, carpentry, and painting, ensuring comprehensive solutions for our clients.

The ideal candidate for this position will have:
  • Eight or more years of experience performing Journey-level facilities maintenance electrical work.
  • A Journeyman's Electrician Card (certificate).
  • Excellent computer skills including familiarity with mobile applications.
  • Experience with IT cabling.
  • The ability to work independently. 
Electricians work at various locations throughout San Mateo County (County Facilities/Buildings, San Mateo Medical Center, Hall of Justice, Maguire Correctional Facility, Maple Street Correctional Center, Youth Services Center, and multiple Community Resource Centers within the county).

The selected candidate for this job must undergo a thorough background check by the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office and fill out a comprehensive security clearance form. They must maintain their security clearance throughout their employment and be cleared to work in locked facilities that house incarcerated individuals.

 

 
Examples Of Duties

 

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: 
 

  • Estimating, constructing, installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical services, requiring journey-level skills.
  • Installing conduit, pulling wire, and installing electrical equipment.
  • Cleaning and repairing electric motors and other equipment.
  • Troubleshooting electrical systems.
  • Performing layout work.
  • Performing preventative maintenance work.
  • Planning, coordinating, and supervising the work of assigned helpers.
  • Performing related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Education an Experience:

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is: 

A minimum of five years of experience working as an Electrician or completion of an apprenticeship program with journey level status as an Electrician and demonstrated proficiency in electrical work.


Licensure/Certification: 

  • Possession of a class C California driver license or equivalent.
