Description
The Department of Public Works is looking for a highly motivated Information Technology (IT) Technician. Under general supervision, the IT Technician will be responsible for supporting the IT staff with general desktop support and access control systems support. General duties include imaging PC's, installing software and hardware, documenting procedures, keeping accurate records, providing advice to users of application software, and training users to make appropriate and safe usage of the IT infrastructure. The IT technician will also be responsible for providing superior customer service in working with both internal users and other departments in maintaining records in the card key management software.
The Department
The Department of Public Works is unique by being one of the few departments in San Mateo County to have its own internal, full-service IT unit, Business Systems Section. BSS is a small group of dedicated IT staff who are responsible for a wide range of roles in Information Technology: from handling core IT functions to providing GIS support to handling access control.
Working in BSS, staff have the opportunity to learn and work with many different aspects of technology including desktop support, enterprise application support, design/ implement/ maintain server, and network infrastructure, creating GIS maps and spatial applications, internet/ intranet web design and support, databases, and even some programming opportunities.
The ideal candidate:
- Has strong desktop support, troubleshooting and “break-fix” skills; familiarity using helpdesk ticketing systems (Samanage, JIRA, ServiceNow, etc.) and knowledge bases (Confluence)
- Has working knowledge of enterprise software platforms (Microsoft O365) and directory services (Active Directory)
- Has thorough knowledge of computer software and hardware and a variety of internet applications, networking, and operating systems (Windows); ability to image Windows workstations using imaging tools (Windows ISO, Clonezilla) and/or deployment platforms (SCCM, MDT) to deploy and maintain computers and laptops.
- Has familiarity with public sector procurement; experience purchasing software licenses, technology equipment and supplies.
- Has great troubleshooting skills, attention to detail, and have the ability and interest to quickly master new technology.
- Has the ability and interest to quickly master new computer applications.
- Is a problem solver with strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills to effectively communicate with diverse groups.
- Is able to maintain confidentiality with sensitive customer and internal information.
- Has the ability to work well and independently in a multi-disciplinary, fast paced environment.
Expected position hours: 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M, Monday through Friday. Time subject to change based on organizational need. Occasional on-call duties may be required. This position will be fully on-site at 555 County Center, Redwood City, CA 94063.
Examples Of Duties
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Managing technology asset inventory; deploy, setup, and maintain inventory of technology devices such as laptops, workstations, servers and peripheral equipment; prepare decommissioned equipment for surplus pickup and/or storage; order equipment and supplies as required.
- Manage technology procurement; purchase software licenses, computers and related hardware, conference room equipment, and supplies as needed.
- Write user operating instructions for departmental applications and equipment; present training, documentation and other materials to user groups and individuals.
- Participate in departmental systems planning activities.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
User Support
- Maintain helpdesk service tickets; Serve as technical resource and primary point of contact for departmental system users; provide desktop and end-user support by in person (including visits to remote sites), remote session, telephone, or email.
- Troubleshoot and assist users in solving operational hardware and software application problems; evaluate problem severity and resolve or escalate to appropriate personnel or vendor for resolution.
- Support the department’s use of audio-visual systems including laptops, televisions, and projectors; set up and provide technical support for presentations, virtual meetings and conference rooms (Teams, Zoom Room, etc.)
Desktop Support
- Install, configure, maintain, troubleshoot and upgrade department computers and peripheral equipment. Deploy and maintain computer images, drivers and software packages.
- Using Active Directory maintains and establishes user accounts and profiles; Onboard and offboard users
- Through end-point management software (SCCM, XDR, Tenable, etc) performs routine system administration functions according to desktop security policies, which include monitoring and adding applications, users and devices, monitoring and deploying security patches.
- Provision and support mobile devices (Apple).
Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to qualify is:
- Education: Possession of a high school diploma and technical certification from an accredited college in a specified area with coursework in computer science, information systems, or a closely related field.
- Experience: One year of full-time experience performing information systems equipment installation, system support, and/or user support duties.
For the Desktop support area
- Computer networks and systems, their operation, support, development and migration.
- Computer hardware and software products in use on the department and across the industry.
Physical Requirements:
- Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, walks, sits, and reaches by extending hands and arms in any direction on a consistent and daily basis.
- Communicates verbally by listening and talking on a consistent and daily basis.
- Uses finger dexterity to pick, pinch, and type; grasps objects with fingers and palms; and perceives attributes of objects by touch on a consistent and daily basis.
- Occasionally uses upper extremities to exert force to push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more; lifts and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis.

Open & Promotional. Anyone may apply. Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.
The examination process will consist of an application screening based on the candidates' application and responses to the supplemental questions (weight: pass/fail). Candidates who pass the application screening may be invited to a panel interview (weight:100%). Depending on the number of applicants, an application appraisal of education and experience may be used in place of other examinations or further evaluation of work experience may be conducted to group applicants by level of qualification. Applicants meeting the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through any subsequent phase of the examination. All examinations will be given in San Mateo County, California and applicants must participate at their own expense.
