Description

The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure providing quality, cost-effective, and timely services for the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. This also includes support of other City Departments providing services to the community.  DPW support includes managing more than 750 fleet assets essential in delivering quality public safety, power, water, sewer, parks, and streets maintenance services to the City.

The Position: 

This classification is the entry level of the City's Automotive Technician series and reports to the Public Works Supervisor, Automotive Technician II/III, or higher-level classification as assigned.  Incumbents in this classification perform routine safety and preventative maintenance inspections of motorized vehicles and equipment.

The annual salary range for this position is $78,600.72 - $100,518.12. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

 

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements: 

Graduation from high school or equivalent.

 

Minimum Experience Requirements:

One (1) year of automotive or heavy equipment (truck or construction equipment) servicing work.

 

Acceptable Substitution: 

Course completion from an accredited institution or an appropriate trade school, or technical coursework from an accredited institution, in diesel or gasoline-powered mechanics leading to an Associate degree or journey level certification may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience.

Desirable Qualification: 

Possession of a valid California Class A driver's license with Air Brake Test is highly desirable.

License/Certifications: 

  • Possession of an appropriate, valid California class C driver's license is required at time of appointment.
  • Possession and maintenance of the following State of California Licenses and Certificates is required prior to completion of the probationary period:

                               Class A California driver's license with air brake test
                               ASE Certifications-A, A4, A5, A6, A7, A8 and A9 or L1 or L3

  • Incumbents shall be required to obtain and maintain any other license(s) and/or certificate(s) that may be required by future regulation for the performance of listed typical tasks.

Other Requirements:  

  • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.
  • Incumbents of this class may be required to work on a shift basis, and/or work unusual hours in emergency situations.
  • Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and /or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations.
  • Incumbents of this classification are required to provide tools for the automotive trade, based on job assignment and fleet composition.

Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview may be required prior to appointment.
