The Department:
The Water and Sewer Utilities Department is a utility enterprise that provides planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of the City's water distribution system, sewer collection system, and recycled water system. The Position:
This is the entry level maintenance position for the Water and Sewer Utility. Typically, you will be assigned to a crew, and will perform semi-skilled work on water or sewer infrastructure. This position will require odd hours and sometimes extended days if jobs run long. You will come in contact with raw sewage, working in knee deep mud, and working around trenches, often on busy city streets.
Under direction, this position operates, maintains, inspects, repairs, and rehabilitates or replaces the water, sanitary sewer, and/or recycled water systems of the City of Santa Clara. This position performs heavy physical labor while performing planned maintenance and repair or emergency response for the City's utility systems and the associated appurtenances.
This position requires one (1) year of related experience. Related experience may include job duties such as pipefitting, plumbing, commercial or residential construction, underground construction, landscaping, paving, steelworker, HVAC, paving, and heavy equipment operations.

The annual salary range for this position is $81,975.60 - $104,936.40. This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

Minimum Education Requirements:
Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.

License/Certifications:
Possession of a valid Class C California driver's license is required at time of appointment
Within one (1) year of appointment, a valid California Commercial Driver’s License, Class B or above, with endorsements for Air Brakes and Tank Vehicle, is required
Within one (1) year of appointment, a valid Water Distribution System Operator Certificate (Grade D-1 or above) issued by the California Department of Health Services, is required
Maintenance of the required (or up-graded) certification is a condition of continued eligibility to hold status in this position
Other Requirements:
Incumbents of this classification may be required to work shift work, weekends, and unusual hours in emergency situations and to be available on an "on-call" basis
Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations
Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job classification

Candidates must attain a passing score on each phase of the examination process to qualify for the Eligible List. A department interview may be required prior to appointment.
