Applications are being accepted for the position of Emergency Medical Technician with the City of South San Francisco. This is a non-benefited, part-time/hourly position.

The Department
The South San Francisco Fire Department provides its residents with service in fire suppression; first-responder and ambulance transport emergency medical services; hazardous materials response; urban search and rescue; marine rescue and fire prevention, investigation and public education. The Department operates five (5) fire stations throughout the City, plus an Emergency Operations Center and Fire Training Tower and is comprised of 92 dedicated staff members.
The Position
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (may include but are not limited to the following):
- Under general supervision, engages in medical aid treatment and transport activities to protect life.
- Drives, operates, and maintains all assigned department apparatus and equipment.
- Assists and participates in training programs; public education.
- Accurately completes electronic patient care reports, physician certification statements, and incident reports.
- Performs other related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (may include but are not limited to the following):
- Mobility to work in both emergency and non-emergency settings.
- Ability to lift or carry up to 110 lbs.
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle under both emergency and non-emergency conditions.
- Strength and stamina to perform service duties.
- Vision sufficient to meet department standards.
- Hearing and speech sufficient to communicate in person and via radio.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience: None
Training: Must be at least 18 years of age with a high school diploma or equivalent.
Licenses/Certificates: All licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Possession of a valid EMT Certification or National Registry, and the ability to be certified by San Mateo County EMS Agency.
- Must possess a valid CPR “Healthcare Provider” card, American Heart Association or equivalent.

- Copy of current Emergency Medical Technician Certificate
- Copy of current CPR Healthcare Provider card (American Heart Association or equivalent)
- Copy of current Driver’s License
- Current and original DMV printout (no older than 30 days from the date of this application)
NOTE: Applications must be filled out in their entirety. Failure to complete the application and/or supplemental questions or failure to include a required attachment will disqualify the applicant from the recruitment process. Failure to list work experience, education or training or indicating “see resume” in the work experience section of the application will be considered an incomplete application and subject to disqualification.

A conviction history will not necessarily disqualify an applicant from appointment. Determinations are made on a case-by-case basis with consideration given to the nature and recency of the conviction and relationship to job duties. All City standards must be met before the final appointment is made.
