Applications are being accepted for the position of Recreation & Community Services Program Coordinator with the City of South San Francisco in the Parks & Recreation Department.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well-being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. 

The Recreation Division sponsors recreation and enrichment programs that meet community needs, address childhood obesity, promote wellness, create a culture of curiosity and learning, enhance the quality of life for the participants, and stimulate economic and community development. The Recreation Division consists of eight program areas, including Aquatics, Classes, Cultural Arts, Preschool and Early Learning, Senior Services, Sports, Rentals, and Youth Enrichment Services, as well as Special Events. Recreation staff are also tasked with operating recreation centers, picnic sites and rental facilities, preschools and select South San Francisco Unified School District after school sites that serve residents of all age groups.

THE POSITION

Under direction of the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor, performs responsible administrative, coordinating, and technical duties in one of the Parks and Recreation programs; and does related work as required. This classification is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program and for the coordinating, supervisory, and administrative duties for the assigned program area.

The current recruitment is for the following program area:

Youth Enrichment Services (YES) Program:

The YES Coordinator is responsible for the operation of one of the City’s Licensed Before and After School programs or the REAL After School Programs, seasonal and summer camps. 

Ideal Candidate

The ideal Recreation and Community Services Program Coordinator will have knowledge of principles, methods, and practices of the assigned program area; management of licensed programs, grant funded programs, and recreational facilities/programs; and principles of supervision, training, and employee development. The ideal candidate will also have the ability to plan, coordinate, and direct the services of a specific program; develop and implement procedures and systems; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; and display outstanding customer service skills.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Training: Completion of at least 12 college units in the following related areas (college transcript must be attached to application):

  • Early Childhood Education
  • Recreation
  • Physical Education
  • Human Services
  • Social Welfare

With a focus in:

  • Child Development
  • Principles or Theory
  • Curriculum
  • Child, Family, Community
  • Administration-Human Relations

Experience: At least 2 years of experience supervising adults and serving in a leadership role, and two years of experience working with elementary school age children in an academic and enrichment program.

Licenses/Certificates: All required licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

• Possession of, or the ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.

• Possession of a current first aid and CPR certificate.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

The most highly suitable and qualified candidates will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview. This assessment is tentatively scheduled for July 16, 2025 and July 17, 2025.

Benefits

Retirement:  CalPERS retirement formula is 2% at age 60 for Classic members or; 2% at age 62 for “new members” as defined by Government Code §7522.04(e). Social Security and Medicare participation and the option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account, with a $100/month employee contribution.

Health Insurance: City offers a choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family).  For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Vacation: Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.

Holidays: Thirteen total paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.

Programs: 457 Deferred Compensation, Paid Family Leave, Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Employee Assistance Program, Long-Term Care, Disability and Life Insurance Programs, City Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Childcare Programs and Commuter Benefit Programs are available. 

Administrative Leave: Entitled to receive 40 hours of administrative leave annually and are also eligible to receive up to an additional 40 hours of administrative leave per fiscal year. 

This classification is in an employee bargaining unit.
