Applications are being accepted for the position of Maintenance Services Supervisor (Building Maintenance) with the City of South San Francisco in the Parks & Recreation Department.

The Department
The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well-being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist.
The Building Maintenance Division’s scope of duties includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Provides janitorial, preventative maintenance services, and necessary building and related equipment repairs to all of the City’s facilities, including interior and exterior work.
- Builds and/or installs items involving finish carpentry, painting, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and other skilled crafts work.
- Manages contracts with vendors maintaining, repairing and upgrading building systems.
- Responds to emergency facility-related issues.
- Plans and executes minor maintenance projects, including tenant improvements, building system and energy efficiency projects, facility repairs and capital upgrades.
- Advises and supports the delivery of capital improvement projects.
- Maintains service records and time logs.
- Supports facilities for meetings and other special events.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal Maintenance Services Supervisor (Building Maintenance) candidate will be a highly skilled and results-driven leader with extensive experience in facilities maintenance and building operations. They will have a strong background in overseeing the repair, renovation, and upkeep of City-owned buildings and structures, ensuring all facilities are safe, functional, and well-maintained for public use. The ideal candidate will be well-versed in managing both routine maintenance and larger-scale improvement projects, including HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building repairs. This candidate will demonstrate exceptional leadership abilities and is capable of supervising a team, prioritizing work orders and managing maintenance schedules across multiple City facilities. They will have a deep understanding of facility management principles, construction techniques and the tools and materials required for maintaining public buildings and structures. A strong commitment to safety, regulatory compliance, and efficient use of resources is essential.
The ideal candidate will also be adept at managing budgets, preparing maintenance plans and overseeing preventative maintenance programs to extend the lifespan of City facilities. They will be skilled at working with outside contractors, coordinating complex repair projects and ensuring work is completed on time and within budget. Additionally, the ideal candidate will bring strong communication and customer service skills, demonstrating professionalism in interactions with City staff, contractors, and the public. They will be proactive in identifying opportunities for improving building operations and reducing maintenance costs while fostering a collaborative work environment.
Schedule is 7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Monday – Friday. This position requires in-office work. Remote/hybrid work schedules are not available. This position requires availability and responsiveness during day or night shifts as needed. Occasional on-call work is required for emergencies after hours and on weekends, as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:
Experience: Five years of progressively more responsible journey-level experience in one or more of the following areas: custodial/building maintenance, general contracting/construction (Facilities). Two years of this experience must be at least in a lead capacity.
Training: Equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by completion of college-level courses in management and supervision, plus an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in construction or a closely related field is desirable.
Licenses/Certifications: Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:
The process will first consist of a review of application materials, including responses to supplemental questions, which must be detailed and complete. Applicants whose submitted application materials demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in the best alignment with the required and desired qualifications of this position will be selected to participate in the next phase of the qualification and selection process, which will include an oral panel interview and written exercise, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, April 28, 2026, which will be weighted as follows:
- Oral Panel Interview (70%)
- Written Exercise (30%)
Following this examination, the top scoring candidates will be invited to a final selection interview with the hiring department.

Benefits
Retirement: CalPERS retirement formula is 2% at age 60 for Classic members or; 2% at age 62 for “new members” as defined by Government Code §7522.04(e). Social Security and Medicare participation and the option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account, with a $100/month employee contribution.
Health Insurance: City offers a choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family). For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans. City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.
Vacation: Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.
Holidays: Thirteen total paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.
Programs: 457 Deferred Compensation, Paid Family Leave, Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Employee Assistance Program, Long-Term Care, Disability and Life Insurance Programs, City Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Childcare Programs and Commuter Benefit Programs are available.
Administrative Leave: Entitled to receive 40 hours of administrative leave annually and are also eligible to receive up to an additional 40 hours of administrative leave per fiscal year.
This classification is in an employee bargaining unit.
