Applications are being accepted for the position of Recreation & Community Services Program Coordinator with the City of South San Francisco in the Parks & Recreation Department.

THE DEPARTMENT

The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well-being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space. The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist.

The Recreation Division sponsors recreation and enrichment programs that meet community needs, address childhood obesity, promote wellness, create a culture of curiosity and learning, enhance the quality of life for the participants, and stimulate economic and community development. The Recreation Division consists of eight program areas, including Aquatics, Classes, Cultural Arts, Preschool and Early Learning, Senior Services, Sports, Rentals, and Youth Enrichment Services, as well as Special Events. Recreation staff are also tasked with operating recreation centers, picnic sites and rental facilities, preschools and select South San Francisco Unified School District after school sites that serve residents of all age groups.

THE POSITION

Under direction of the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor, performs responsible administrative, coordinating, and technical duties in one of the Parks and Recreation programs; and does related work as required. This classification is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program and for the coordinating, supervisory, and administrative duties for the assigned program area.

The current recruitment is for the following program area:  Youth Enrichment Services (YES) Program.  This is a grant-funded position and is subject to grant funding.

The YES Coordinator is responsible for the operation of one of the City’s Licensed Before and After School programs or the REAL After School Programs, seasonal and summer camps.

The ideal Recreation and Community Services Program Coordinator is a passionate, organized professional dedicated to supporting the growth and development of youth through engaging, safe, and inclusive enrichment programs. They have experience coordinating youth-focused activities and supervising staff, with the ability to manage daily operations while ensuring compliance with licensing and safety regulations.  They are a positive role model and strong communicator who builds meaningful relationships with youth, families, schools, and community partners. This individual excels in customer service, brings creativity to program development, and can effectively balance administrative responsibilities such as scheduling, registration, and basic budgeting. A successful candidate is dependable, proactive, and adaptable, with a genuine commitment to creating enriching experiences for youth.  This is a direct service position, working with school-age children.

QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

Training: Completion of at least 12 college units in the following related areas (college transcript must be attached to application):

  • Early Childhood Education
  • Recreation
  • Physical Education
  • Human Services
  • Social Welfare

With a focus in:

  • Child Development
  • Principles or Theory
  • Curriculum
  • Child, Family, Community
  • Administration-Human Relations

Experience: At least 2 years of experience supervising adults and serving in a leadership role, and two years of experience working with elementary school age children in an academic and enrichment program.

Licenses/Certificates: All required licenses and certificates must be maintained as a condition of employment.

  • Possession of an appropriate valid California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record.
  • Possession of a current first aid and CPR certificate.

THE SELECTION PROCESS:

The process will first consist of a review of application materials, including responses to supplemental questions, which must be detailed and complete. Applicants whose submitted application materials demonstrate knowledge, skills and abilities in the best alignment with the required and desired qualifications of this position will be selected to participate in the next phase of the qualification and selection process, which will include an oral panel interview, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, May 19, 2026.

Following this examination, the top scoring candidates will be invited to a final selection interview with the hiring department.

Benefits

Retirement:  CalPERS retirement formula is 2% at age 60 for Classic members or; 2% at age 62 for “new members” as defined by Government Code §7522.04(e). Social Security and Medicare participation and the option to participate in 457 deferred compensation plans. City contributes equivalent of 1.5% of base pay towards a medical after-retirement account, with a $100/month employee contribution.

Health Insurance:  City offers a choice of medical HMO (two providers) or PPO plan, and offers vision and dental coverage. City pays 100% of vision and dental premiums for employee and eligible dependents. Employees shall contribute 10% of the HMO premium cost based on category of coverage (single, two, family).  For PPO, employee pays cost difference between PPO and HMO plans.  City provides 100% City-paid short- and long-term disability insurances. The City offers a discretionary benefit account for employees who demonstrate health coverage elsewhere.

Vacation:  Fifteen to thirty working days annual vacation, based on the length of service.

Holidays:  Thirteen total paid holidays per year plus one floating holiday.

Programs:  457 Deferred Compensation, Paid Family Leave (exchange with Paid Parental Leave for PA & IAFF units), Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts, Employee Assistance Program, Long-Term Care, Disability and Life Insurance Programs, City Recreation Classes, Reduced-fee Childcare Programs and Commuter Benefit Programs are available.

Administrative Leave:  Entitled to receive 40 hours of administrative leave annually and are also eligible to receive up to an additional 40 hours of administrative leave per fiscal year.

This classification is in an employee bargaining unit.
