The Sustainability Aide is an entry-level position that provides essential program, technical, customer service, and field support to the Sustainability Division’s solid waste, water conservation, energy, and electric vehicle (EV) charging programs.
This role is ideal for individuals interested in environmental programs who demonstrate strong communication skills, attention to detail, and an interest in data-driven problem-solving within a local government setting.
This is a part-time position, up to 29 hours per week, not to exceed 1,000 hours in a fiscal year. Work hours are flexible within City business hours; two to three days per week is preferred.
Primary Responsibilities
- Provide customer and permit counter service by responding to public, contractor, and developer inquiries related to solid waste, recycling, water conservation, energy, and EV charging programs.
- Process and review Construction and Demolition (C&D) permit applications and plans, including verification of recycling requirements, authorized haulers, and Green Halo documentation.
- Support sustainability-related development review, including solid waste space planning, trash and recycling enclosure requirements, and coordination with other City departments.
- Assist with data collection, entry, tracking, and basic analysis for waste, recycling, edible food recovery, water use, debris, energy, and EV infrastructure programs.
- Support compliance and implementation of State regulatory requirements, including SB 1383 edible food recovery and organic waste diversion programs.
- Assist with GIS-based sustainability mapping, including trash and recycling enclosure mapping for development projects and updates to sustainability-related maps in coordination with the GIS team.
- Provide program support for energy and infrastructure projects, such as streetlighting replacement projects in coordination with Southern California Edison (SCE).
- Assist with sustainability budgeting support, including tracking program expenditures, maintaining records, and supporting basic budget documentation.
- Support public outreach and education efforts, including staffing events, conducting surveys, and preparing materials and documentation.
- Maintain accurate records in City databases, prepare spreadsheets, draft basic reports and memos, and assist with routine administrative tasks as needed.

Ideal Candidate
The Ideal Candidate should possess:
- Bachelor’s degree (or current enrollment in a Bachelor’s degree program), with coursework in environmental science, sustainability, planning, engineering, geography/GIS, public administration, or a related field
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrated interest in sustainability, environmental programs, or climate-related topics (self-study acceptable)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel; comfort working with spreadsheets and data
- Interest in or exposure to GIS mapping, data analysis, or technical tools (training provided)
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment
Experience or coursework in GIS, data analysis, budgeting, graphics/design, energy systems, or Spanish language skills are a plus, but not required.
