The City of Thousand Oaks has an excellent promotional opportunity for a Landscape Maintenance Worker I/II in the Public Works department.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Perform skilled work in the pruning, care, and maintenance of trees and grounds maintenance, including chemical application duties
  • Perform heavy manual labor in the care and maintenance of trees and in performing grounds maintenance
  • Install, repair, and program irrigation systems and controllers
  • Perform graffiti removal
  • Perform routine and emergency work from an aerial lift bucket
  • Assist in overseeing the work of contractors
  • Assist with encampment and abandoned property clean-up efforts (e.g. supporting police personnel in non-enforcement and enforcement situations, or contracted services by posting, documenting, collecting, storing and/or disposing of private property or debris)

 

Note: Work Schedule – 4/40 (Monday – Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Position involves performing after-hours emergency work on an “as needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis.

Ideal Candidate

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Some experience in gardening or landscape maintenance
  • The ability to operate and maintain landscape maintenance equipment
  • Knowledge of proper landscape, irrigation, and tree maintenance
  • The ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing 50 pounds or more and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds
  • The ability to work in tight and confined spaces, including precarious places, on elevated platforms and aerial devices, and in inclement weather conditions
  • Pride in their personal work product; demonstrate initiative
  • Commitment to safe work practices and procedures
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Basic computer skills

 

Education

  • A minimum of a high school diploma, or equivalent.

 

Experience

  • A valid Class B California driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsement.
  • Two years of experience in the operation of light, medium, and heavy-duty construction equipment.

 

Work Schedule: Monday – Thursday, 6:30AM to 5:00PM.

May perform after-hour emergency work on as “as needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis. Must be able to respond to on-call responsibilities at the Municipal Services Center within 30 minutes.

 

Requirements:

Level I: Ability to obtain a valid Class B California driver’s license with air brakes and tanker endorsement within six months of employment.

 

Level II: Two years of experience at a level comparable to the Landscape Maintenance Worker I with the City. A valid Class B California driver’s license with air brake and tanker endorsement.

Perform after-hours emergency work on an “as needed” basis and on-call duties on a rotating basis.  Must be able to respond to on-call responsibilities at the Municipal Service Center within 30 minutes. 

 

Special Requirement:

  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Classification is part of the US Department of Transportation (DOT) program and is regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA). Pre-employment and random drug testing are requirements of the program.
  • Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT) to obtain a valid Class B California driver's license.
