POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

DESCRIPTION 

We are seeking a collaborative, service-oriented individual to conduct a variety of code compliance duties with competence and professionalism. The Code Compliance Officer I/II will be responsible for conducting inspections and investigations pertaining to violations of the municipal code provisions in zoning ordinances, sanitary regulations, business license regulations, building standards and nuisance abatement ordinances.  The Code Compliance Officer I/II must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be self-directed, exercise discretion, and excellent judgment. 

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Conduct technical field inspections and investigations to determine compliance of residential, commercial, and industrial buildings with zoning ordinances, conditions of zoning variance, special use, and other conditioned permits
  • Receive and investigate public concerns; conduct on-site inspections and determine existence and type of code violations
  • Prepare cases for court proceedings and legal review, mediation, warrants, etc. in coordination with the City Attorney's Office
  • Testify or represent the City as a subject matter expert in court actions, depositions, and proceedings as necessary
  • Issue corrective notices, administrative citations, and orders to comply with code violations; interpret and explain municipal codes and ordinances to members of the public, contractors, business owners, and other interested groups
  • Input case notes into the Tyler Enterprise Permitting & Licensing system

Ideal Candidate

Ideal Candidate:

  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Knowledge of codes, ordinances, laws and/or regulations governing one or more of the following: Land Use/Zoning, Building, Housing, Plumbing, Electrical, and Mechanical Nomenclature
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships including interacting with the public in potentially volatile situations

 

Requirements:

A Valid Class C California driver's license.

Code Compliance Officer I: Requires one year of work experience involving considerable public contact, preferably in a governmental planning or building safety department. Completion of required P.O.S.T. training including PC 832 Arrest, Search and Seizure certification within six months of employment.

Code Compliance Officer II: Requires two years of experience at a level comparable to the Code Compliance Officer I. Completion of required P.O.S.T. training including PC 832 Arrest, Search and Seizure certification.
