Description

The Dixon Fire Department is opening their Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit position for someone to attend the Fire Academy in January 2026. The "Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit" is an entry-level classification designed for recruits with a current paramedic license to gain firefighting, fire rescue, and fire prevention skills and training necessary through an accredited Fire Academy. Training may include firefighting techniques and procedures; emergency medical training; technical rescue and hazardous materials training.

EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING:  Following successful completion of the academy, Firefighter/Paramedics will be placed in a full-time, regular appointment and required to successfully complete an 18-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS will be applied. A copy of the DD214 form must be filed at the time of application.

Ideal Candidate

This position will attend an accredited academy and receive on-the-job training to learn more about the Firefighter/Paramedic field.

Education: 

Graduation from a paramedic training program that meets the requirements for licensing in the State of California by date of appointment.

Successful completion of High School or possession of a G.E.D.

For out-of-state candidates: Must possess a valid National Registry certification at time of application. Must have applied for a State of California Paramedic license by the time of application and must possess a valid State of California Paramedic License by the time of appointment.

Experience: 

Some work experience performing firefighting and/or paramedic services is desirable.

License, Certificates, and/or Other Requirements:

Passing score (>70%) on the Fire Candidate Testing Center written test (FCTConline.org), to be placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List. The list from FCTC will be pulled the week after the recruitment closes.

Accreditation by the County of Solano as an EMT-P is required within six (6) months of appointment.

Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) by date appointment Certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for BLS provider by date of appointment.

Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) OR Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP) by date of appointment.

Certification in Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) OR Basic Trauma Life Support (BTLS) OR International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) by date of appointment. Current Candidate Physical Ability (CPAT) card issued within 1 year prior to date-of-appointment for Trainee and Academy Graduates only.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS - BENEFIT SUMMARY SHEET

Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs.  City gives an allowance toward the cost of insurance.  Maximum Family Medical Benefit Allowance (2025): $2,025 per month.

Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). Upon completion of the Fire Academy, members will be transitioned into the Public Safety Retirement system. 

Bilingual Pay: $100 per month upon certification.

What does it take to get hired as a Firefighter/Paramedic Recruit?

1. Application - Apply during the open application period. Applications, supplemental questions and FCTC documents will be reviewed and screened, and the most qualified candidates will be invited to continue in the examination process.

2.  A valid California satisfactory driving record - Attach DMV Printout obtained from an official California DMV Office - www.DMV.ca.gov) with your application. The online Driver Record is not an official document, but the City will accept either this or an official copy. The City will also accept an out of state/country DMV record. However, you will need to obtain a California State Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment.  

3. Written Test - Pass the written test from the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center at FCTConline.org to be placed on the FCTC Statewide Eligibility List. We will be pulling the list from FCTC the week after the recruitment closes. Click on the link above to register for upcoming exams and to learn more about the process.

4. Physical Agility - Must possess a valid Cal-JAC CPAT Card from FCTC or will need to participate in the City of Dixon Fire Department Physical Agility Exam.

5. Paramedic Skills Test - Qualifying candidates will be required to pass the Paramedic Skills test.

6. Oral Interview - The top-performing candidates will be invited to interview.

7. Chief's Interview - The top-performing candidates placed on the eligibility list will be invited to a Chief's interview.

8.  Livescan – Candidates who pass the oral interview will then be fingerprinted (Livescan) at the Dixon Police Department.

9. Background - A hiring eligibility list will be presented to the Fire Department. The Department will determine which candidates will proceed to the background process. If selected, a comprehensive background investigation will be conducted.

10. Conditional Offer of Employment - The Department may extend a Conditional Offer of Employment, if your background meets the standards.

11. Pre-Employment Medical Exam - Qualifying candidates will be scheduled for a medical evaluation and a drug and alcohol screening.
