The City of Dixon is excited to announce the recruitment for an Interim Public Works Director (Limited-Term) for a duration of 6-12 months. This interim appointment qualifies for full-time benefits; including CalPERS retirement and is a great opportunity for highly motivated individuals ready to expand and refine their Public Works career.
The Interim Public Works Director will play a critical leadership role during a period of elevated development activity and organizational transition. This position requires a hands-on leader who can maintain momentum on existing initiatives while advancing new priorities across Public Works, Engineering, and land development functions.
This is an exempt, at-will senior management position directly responsible to the City Manager.

Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience may be invited to participate in the subsequent phase of the evaluation process which may include interviews, written exercises, or simulated work problems, after a contingent offer is made Ratification by City Council.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will provide steady, experienced leadership and operational oversight across Public Works functions, including parks, facilities, streets, streetscapes, transit, and recreation. They will ensure continuity of services while maintaining high standards of safety, efficiency, and responsiveness.
This individual will work collaboratively with Community Development, Engineering, Finance and other City departments to align Public Works operations and infrastructure planning with current and future development initiatives.
The ideal candidate will directly supervise and support existing Public Works staff, setting clear expectations, promoting accountability, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
A strong operational background in street and park maintenance is essential, along with the ability to maintain positive labor and employee relations and promote teamwork and organizational stability throughout the interim assignment.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Engineering or related field.
Experience: Seven years of increasingly responsible experience involving the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of public works and recreation programs including street and parks maintenance; including three years of administrative and management responsibility.
Other Requirements: This position requires possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License within 30 days of appointment and a satisfactory driving record as a condition of initial and continued employment.
