The City of Dixon is pleased to announce an exciting career opportunity! We are currently recruiting for the position of Public Works Operations & Maintenance Superintendent (Manager) in our dynamic Public Works Department. This key leadership role plays a vital part in shaping the heart of our community. This position will be responsible for planning, organizing, implementing, and supervising a wide range of Public Works Operations — including maintenance and operations of parks, landscaped areas, recreation facilities, streetscapes, streets, municipal buildings and facilities, and fleet.
This is a mid-management classification with broad responsibility for overseeing Public Works Operations. The Superintendent is entrusted with a variety of complex, high-level managerial and supervisory duties and receives administrative direction from the Public Works Director. The role also involves both direct and indirect supervision of Public Works Operations personnel.
Exam Process: A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that they, among those competing, are better qualified in terms of related education, training and experience may be invited to participate in a written exam and/or an interview process (weighted 100%). The most qualified candidates from this process will be placed on an employment eligibility list. Note: the examination process may be changed as deemed necessary.
Employment Processing: Those selected will be subject to pre-employment drug testing, physical evaluation and fingerprinting. In accordance with Federal law, an employee must provide proof of identity and legal right to work in the United States.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate for Public Works Superintendent is a hands-on, service-oriented leader who thrives in a close-knit but growing community where flexibility, collaboration, and visibility are essential. This individual will oversee public facilities, parks, buildings, streets, streetscapes, fleet, and daily operations, ensuring that core municipal services are delivered efficiently, safely, and with a high level of accountability. With broad experience in public works operations, the successful candidate will be comfortable managing multiple service areas, prioritizing competing demands, and responding effectively to emergencies, weather events, and community concerns. Strong knowledge of preventative maintenance, asset management, infrastructure preservation, budgeting, and cost control is essential to maintaining high service levels while positioning the organization to meet future growth.
In a developing organization, the Superintendent must lead by example while maintaining a visible presence in the field, mentoring and supporting staff, and fostering a culture of teamwork, safety, and professionalism. The ideal candidate will communicate clearly and work collaboratively with Engineering, Community Development, Finance, and other departments to align operational needs with ongoing and anticipated development initiatives. Approachable and responsive, this individual will value strong customer service and community trust, recognizing the importance of positive public interaction in an engaged and expanding community.
Education:
Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by college level course work in engineering, business or public administration, or related field. Possession of an Associate’s Degree or higher in supervision, and management, construction management, or a related field is desired.
Experience:
Five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in the construction, maintenance, and repair of public works facilities (e.g., parks, streets, buildings, fleet, recreation facilities), including at least five (5) years of supervisory experience.
Other Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
May require the ability to obtain a Class B or A Driver’s License, as designated by management.
Requires possession of a valid California Pesticide Applicator's Certificate.

CalPERS TIER DEFINITIONS - MOU INTERPRETATION OF CALPERS TIERS
CalPERS Annuitants will be limited to only 960 hours in a fiscal year and this position is full-time.
Retirement: CalPERS Retirement System (2% @ 60 formula for Classic CalPERS members and 2% @ 62 formula for new CalPERS members). The City does not participate in social security.
Medical: CalPERS Medical Insurance Plans, including HMOs and PPOs. City will contribute an amount up to 85% of the premium for the Kaiser (Region 1) health plan. 2026 Maximum Employer Medical Contribution for family will be $2,583.18.
Bilingual Pay: $150 per month upon certification.
Standby Pay: $60/weekday evening; $150/weekend day; $150/holidays
