Description
The City of Dixon is seeking a highly qualified and motivated law enforcement professional to serve as Police Captain for the Dixon Police Department. This command staff position plays a key role in shaping departmental operations, supervising division personnel, and assisting the Chief of Police in advancing the department’s mission of professional, community-focused policing.
This is an exciting opportunity to join a respected police department in a growing community that strongly supports public safety. The selected candidate will help guide departmental strategy, oversee operational divisions, and contribute to organizational development during a period of growth that includes a planned renovation and expansion of the department’s police facility.

Ideal Candidate
Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. Any field of study is acceptable. Master’s Degree is desirable.
Experience:
Eight (8) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including two (2) years at the rank of lieutenant or equivalent supervisory/management rank with a POST-regulated California law enforcement agency.
Other Requirements:
Possession of, California POST Management Certificate at time of appointment.
Completion of the California POST Command College, FBI National Academy, or a
comparable executive leadership development program is highly desirable.
A valid California driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record are conditions of initial and continued employment.
Must successfully complete a background investigation as a condition of initial employment with the Dixon Police Department.

CalPERS Retirement
There is no participation in Social Security. CalPERS will determine whether the employee qualifies as a Classic or New Member under Government Code section 7522.04.
Medical Benefits
The City contributes up to 70 percent of the CalPERS Region 1 family rate (currently $2,127 per month) toward a CalPERS medical plan. If no medical plan is selected, the City provides $600 per month.

Delta Dental PPO or DHMO and VSP vision coverage.
Life Insurance
$25,000 basic life insurance policy provided by the City.
Deferred Compensation
Optional participation in traditional or Roth deferred compensation plans.
Vacation
Vacation accrues at 12 days per year. Prior qualifying service may be considered for increased accrual.
Holidays
Twelve paid holidays annually plus two floating holidays.
Sick Leave
Earned at one day per month with retirement service credit conversion options.
Administrative Leave
104 hours per year with cash-out provisions.
Long-Term Disability
Income protection equal to two-thirds of salary after 60 days. Premiums paid by the City.
Vehicle
Leased vehicle provided.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS: A limited number of candidates whose applications show that, among those competing, they are better qualified in terms of related training and experience will be invited to participate in the following search schedule:
Review of Applications - Week of April __, 2026.
Take-Home Component (based on own qualifications and resume) - Send out Week of April __, 2026.
Two (2) Panel Interviews (Technical & General) followed by a presentation - Tentatively Scheduled for week of May __, 2026.
PHS Submission - Request to be sent tentatively May __, 2026.
Department Interviews - Tentatively Scheduled for June __, 2026.
EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING:
Process includes a Personal History Statement (PHS) review, Poly exam, extensive personal background investigation, credit history, pre-employment medical, with drug test, and psychological assessments.
Failure of any component during the exam process eliminates the candidate from further selection processing.
All appointees are required to complete a field training program and successfully complete an 18-month probationary period, and in accordance with Federal law, are to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.
