The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the city which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill.

The Position: 

This is the second level paraprofessional position in the Staff Aide series requiring the frequent use of independent judgment and interpretive ability related to research, analysis, and report writing. An incumbent in this classification performs work of a varied and responsible nature under general direction with some responsibility for the follow-through on details of assigned projects. This classification is distinguished from a Staff Aide II in that the Staff Aide II – Environmental Programs is a public facing role with specific knowledge of solid waste, source reduction, recycling, and urban runoff pollution prevention.

 • One (1) year of customer service including complaint resolution, public education, or general program administration in one of the following areas: solid waste, recycling, waste prevention, or urban run-off pollution prevention program.

License/Certifications: 
 • Possession of a valid California driver's license is required at time of appointment and for duration of employment.

Desirable Qualifications: 

• Experience preparing State of California grant applications.

What You’ll Do

• Process utility bills for residents and businesses in the City.
• Work with other departments and the City’s waste management service to accurately set up complex utility accounts and process utility bill adjustments.
• Interact with and assist customers to set up, adjust, and/or close their utility accounts and provide general customer service support.
• Reconcile revenue and financial accounting systems, interfacing transactional data between them.
• Create invoices for various departments to collect fees and other sources of revenue.
• Review, reconcile, and record daily revenue transactions.
• Assist with various month-end and year-end accounting tasks specific to the Revenue section.

The Essentials

• Three (3) years of increasingly responsible accounting clerical experience.
• Education equivalent to an associate of arts degree in accounting or a related field. Additional experience may be substituted for some of the required education on a year-to-year basis.

Highly desirable  

• Utility billing and miscellaneous revenue collection and/or customer service experience.

The Department:

The mission of the Finance Department is to ensure that the financial/fiscal activities of the City, its Agencies and Corporations are performed, recorded and presented in compliance with professional and ethical standards. The Finance Department administers the financial affairs of the City, including City-owned public utilities. These functions include: budget administration and control; maintaining a general accounting system and the preparation of comprehensive annual financial reports; collection of taxes, fees, special assessments and utility charges; investment of City funds; procurement of supplies, materials, equipment, and services; operating the City Warehouse; issuance of bonds and debt management; internal auditing; and financial management of contracts, including leases.

The Accounting Division resides in the City's Finance Department and is responsible for providing relevant, accurate, and timely transaction processing and financial reporting services for the City. 

The Position:

This is a paraprofessional position in the classified service and is distinguished from the next lower level of Accounting Technician II in that positions at this level require the frequent use of a high degree of independent judgment and interpretative ability related to a technical knowledge of accounting, computer applications, on-line financial systems, and applicable laws and regulations. While a Senior Accounting Technician can perform work in all areas of the Accounting Division, the current recruitment is within the Accounts Payable section. The Department: 

The Purchasing Division resides in the City's Finance Department and maintains a "centralized purchasing system" that is responsible for all purchasing and contracting activity for supplies, materials, and equipment as well as general and professional services.  The Division also operates a Central Warehouse, with over 3,000 inventory items primarily to support the City's utility departments (Silicon Valley Power and the Water and Sewer Departments). The Division is also responsible for the disposition of surplus property and the City mailroom.

The Division will soon expand its warehouse operations with the opening of a second warehouse to support Silicon Valley Power’s infrastructure projects. This recruitment is to fill the Chief Storekeeper position that will manage operations at the current central warehouse, as the incumbent Chief Storekeeper will be transitioning over to the new warehouse.

The Position: 

The Chief Storekeeper is a classified position responsible for overseeing day-to-day warehouse operations, including:

• Oversee a wide variety of materials, supplies, and related equipment 
• Receiving, storing, and issuing supplies, tools, and equipment 
• Ensuring accurate inventory tracking and efficient material handling
• Providing direction to departments for orders of materials
• Supervising a team consisting of two Material Handlers and one Senior Materials Handler in the efficient requisition and issue of materials and supplies

SENIOR CIVIL ENGINEER OR ENGINEER II

SENIOR CIVIL ENGINEER - $11,233.58 - $15,430.92 Monthly

For the Senior Engineer, the salary range listed above reflects the full compensation potential for this position. Initial placement in the salary range is typically within the first half of the range; however, in certain circumstances (i.e. an experienced lateral candidate) placement at or above the midpoint may be considered. The last 3% of the salary range requires five years of City of Gilroy service and strong work performance – see MOU for specific requirements.

For Engineer II, additional steps (Step F, Step G, and Step H) included in the salary range listed above are available to employees in this job classification after completion of five years of service (Step F), ten years of service (Step G), and 15 years of service (Step H),  one year at the prior step, and a good performance evaluation.  Initial salary placement is typically at the entry point of the range unless the candidate has prior lateral work experience which may warrant initial placement at a higher step.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting for a full-time Senior Civil Engineer or an Engineer II (dependent on qualifications) for the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department. The Senior Civil Engineer classification is an exempt, mid-management level position. 

The Engineer II will play a critical role in designing, managing and delivering Capital Improvement projects that improve essential city infrastructure. Although this position is dedicated to CIP, in order to appropriately respond to community needs, the Engineer II may also provide support to the Land Development and Transportation engineering sections, so adaptability and flexibility are keys to success in this position. The Engineer II is a journey-level position that will work under the direct supervision of a Senior Engineer or City Engineer and will perform professional engineering work in the field and office. Pipeline public projects include completion of the Civic Center Master Plan, design and bid of the new Santa Teresa Fire Station, a $7 million pavement rehabilitation project, a $3 million San Ysidro Park remodel project, and completion of Traffic Impact Fee Study. The City is processing multiple large private projects including an almost one million square foot Amazon data center as well as multiple residential subdivisions and multi-family projects.

ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Gilroy is currently recruiting a full-time Engineering Technician/Inspector at level I or II or III (depending on experience and qualifications) for the Engineering Division of the Public Works Department.
