The Skilled Trades Internship Program has three (3) internship opportunities among three (3) of our plants: Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center*, Rinconada Water Treatment Plant, and Santa Teresa Water Treatment Plant.
 
NOTE: Advanced Water Purification Center is categorized as a Wastewater facility, and interning at this facility only qualifies for Wastewater treatment operator licenses. Both Rinconada and Santa Teresa water treatment plants are conventional T-5 drinking water facilities.
 
INTERNSHIP LOCATION STATUS:
This internship position will require the selected candidate to report on-site 100% of the time, adhering to strict safety protocols. Interns will be placed at one of three locations, the Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center, the Rinconada Water Treatment Plant, or the Santa Teresa Water Treatment Plant.

 

• Currently enrolled in or completed an Engineering, Science, or Water Related Program in the last six (6) months.
• Pursuing state certification to be an operator at a Drinking Water Treatment Facility or an Advanced Water Treatment Facility. (PLEASE NOTE: high school graduates are automatically qualified to take the entry level Grade T1 state exam and obtain their certification right away)
• Community service and safety orientation.
• Curious and mechanically inclined.
• Able to do shift work.

• 5 am start, shift pass down.
• Learning safe work practices.
• Training with a certified water plant operator to perform plant rounds and associated duties.
• Performing basic water sampling and analysis.

The Department: 

The Department of Public Works (DPW) constructs, maintains and improves various components of the City’s infrastructure and provides quality, cost-effective, timely services to the residents and businesses of Santa Clara. DPW is responsible for a wide variety of programs throughout the city which include implementation of solid waste and urban run-off pollution prevention programs, design, construction management, inspection and maintenance of City streets, bridges, storm drain systems, traffic signal systems, building facilities, fleet, street trees, landscaping and the closed landfill.

The Position: 

This is the second level paraprofessional position in the Staff Aide series requiring the frequent use of independent judgment and interpretive ability related to research, analysis, and report writing. An incumbent in this classification performs work of a varied and responsible nature under general direction with some responsibility for the follow-through on details of assigned projects. This classification is distinguished from a Staff Aide II in that the Staff Aide II – Environmental Programs is a public facing role with specific knowledge of solid waste, source reduction, recycling, and urban runoff pollution prevention.

Labor Relations Unit (Position Code 834) 

Valley Water Telework Program: Eligibility for telework will depend on the type of work performed, operational needs, and the ability for the employee to perform the essential functions of their job duties while teleworking. These positions are returning to the fire district in 2025, and we’ll be hiring three people to operate the chipping crew.  This position is expected to be active from approximately May through November.  The actual start and end dates will be dependent on weather and snow conditions and may be extended beyond 6 months, but no more than 9 months from the employment start date.  The eligibility list established from this recruitment will be used to fill current and future vacancies.  

The Chipping Crew Members work under the direct supervision of the Division Chief of Fire and Life Safety or their designee.  

The primary purpose of this crew is to operate a residential chipping program for the local community. This includes responding to chipping requests, traveling to those addresses with a truck and chipper, chipping the material, ensuring a clean site upon leaving, potentially hauling and dumping the material at a temporary holding site, assisting with loading, and ensuring activities are adequately tracked. The applicant must be comfortable working in outdoor environments under varying weather conditions and lifting objects frequently up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 50 pounds.  Chipping crew members will also assist with community workdays utilizing the truck and chipper or assisting with cutting and hauling combustible materials and filling green waste dumpsters.

The Position: 

Silicon Valley Power (SVP), the Electric Department of the City of Santa Clara, is seeking an experienced Senior Instrument and Controls Technician.  

The Senior Instrument and Control Technician is a senior level technical classification. The Position has a key role in the optimization of the Preventative Maintenance program and the development of SVP’s Maintenance philosophy. This classification performs maintenance and repair on all instruments, control systems, and electrical equipment in the City's power generation facilities.  The incumbent inspects, repairs, tests, adjusts, installs, and removes all power plant electrical, DCS/control, and instrumentation systems and equipment including:

• Monitors, maintain, and repairs gas turbine, steam turbine control systems, generators, transformers, and switchgear.
• Maintains, calibrates and repairs plant electrical, instrumentation, and control systems.
• Performs routine and advanced trouble shooting activities
• Maintains logs, manuals, records, drawings, schematics and operating procedures in a neat and professional manner.
• Provides written reports on control system conditions when required.

The annual salary range for this position is $187,857.48 - $240,516.72.  This position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range.

 

 

One of the following education requirements:

• Education equivalent to graduation from high school and
• Four (4) years of electric generation operation and maintenance experience in a medium sized electric generation power plant or the equivalent is required, two (2) years of which must have been at above the entry-level
• Two (2) additional years of electric generation operation and maintenance experience with an electric generation power plant or the equivalent is highly desirable. 
• Three (3) years of operations and maintenance level experience above the entry level with work assignments in the City of Santa Clara combined cycle generation facilities may substitute for the above experience requirements.

License/Certifications:

Possession of a valid California driver's license is required.
 Possession of the following certificates are required within one year of appointment for the duration of the appointment:

• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Pipeline;
• Department of Transportation (DOT) Qualified Operator for Natural Gas Compressor Station;
• Department of Transportation (DOT) Drug Testing Program for Natural Gas Pipeline and Compression Station Operator;
• Qualified to wear a respirator;
• Qualified electrical worker, who is qualified to do switching, required within two years of appointment and for the duration of the appointment; and
• Incumbents shall be required to obtain and maintain any other licenses(s) and or certification(s) that may be required by future regulation by Federal, State and/or industry requirements.

Physical Requirements:

• Incumbents may be assigned to work on a rotating shift schedule.  Incumbents must have the ability to work, as assigned, to schedules that may include Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and non-traditional work hours; and a willingness to work overtime as required.
• Employees are required to pass initial and periodic comprehensive background checks, which may include fingerprinting, to meet Federal, State and/or industry security requirements. Incumbents hired before 6/16/04 are grandfathered from the initial background requirement.
• Must be able to identify color and materials normally used in the electric trade.
• Must be able to lift twenty (20) pounds in awkward positions and fifty (50) pounds from the floor to the waist.
• Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, lift, reach, walk up and down stairs, and climb ladders at elevations of eighty (80) feet or more as necessary to perform assigned duties.
• Must be able to wear respirator and any other appropriate safety equipment.
