The Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated and results-oriented Street Maintenance Worker I/II for the Street division. Depending on the candidate's qualifications, the vacancy will be filled at either Street Maintenance Worker Level 1 or Level 2. The successful candidate will work at the City’s Municipal Service Center in the Newbury Park area of Thousand Oaks.

Primary responsibilities:

• Breaks and removes concrete using a hydraulic breaker and handwork
• Repair or replace cracked, raised, sunken, or otherwise damaged sidewalks, curbs, and gutters
• Perform skilled and semi-skilled work in the construction, maintenance, repair, and cleaning of streets, curbs, gutters, storm drains, and related structures
• Perform heavy manual labor in the removal, repair, and finish of concrete and asphalt work
• Operate and maintain a variety of maintenance and construction equipment, including hand and power tools, and light, medium, and heavy motorized equipment
• Conduct traffic control when working in traffic areas of the City; install street barricades and cones; direct and control traffic around work sites
• Maintain records of work performed

The incumbent in this position will be instrumental in directing the planning, design, and construction of public infrastructure projects, overseeing both city-led developments and private sector contributions. This includes the review and approval of subdivision maps, street designs, stormwater management, and adherence to city and state standards for engineering projects. As a vital contributor to the City’s long-term development, the City Engineer will manage the City's Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), ensuring that infrastructure projects are aligned with the needs of our growing community. 

Some of the City's exciting in-progress and upcoming projects that this position will be involved in include: 

• A streetscape project funded with regional grants and state earmarks, celebrating a beginning to development of the downtown area.

This position reports to the Public Works Director and supervises a talented team of professional, technical, and paraprofessional staff. The City Engineer will also act in the absence of the Public Works Director, providing crucial leadership and decision-making in the department. 

A few key aspects of this position are: 

• Leadership & Supervision: Direct the activities of the Engineering Division by assigning, supervising, and evaluating the work of staff and ensure that city projects are completed on time, within budget, and in accordance with legal requirements. 

• Project Oversight: Lead the development and implementation of major street, transportation, and capital projects through plan and specification review, bidding process management, and construction and inspection. 

• Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all private development and public improvement plans comply with state and local codes, including the preparation and review of subdivision maps and stormwater management initiatives. 

• Capital Improvement Management: Administer the City’s Capital Improvement Plan (CIP), including project selection, budget oversight, and coordination with City Council and other stakeholders. 

• Grant Applications & Management: Apply for federal and state grants to fund various public works projects. Monitor the expenditure and compliance of awarded grants. 

• Collaboration & Communication: Provide guidance to other City departments and the public on civil engineering and urban development matters. Represent the City in regional discussions and public meetings.

The City of East Palo Alto is seeking a skilled, passionate individual to fill one full-time Assistant/ Associate Engineer position. The Assistant/ Associate Engineer performs professional engineering field and office work related to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of the City’s capital improvement projects, land development, traffic engineering, public works infrastructure, and daily departmental operations. The incumbent will prepare and review designs, specifications, and related engineering and construction documents. The individual will provide assistance related to consultant requests for proposals for professional and/or construction services. The Assistant/ Associate Engineer will confer with developers, contractors, other engineers, and the general public. The successful candidate will perform a variety of studies and prepare and present staff reports; and perform related duties, as assigned. The City will hire at either the Assistant or Associate level, depending on the qualifications held by the pool of candidates.

Description 

Under varying levels of supervision, performs maintenance and repair of City facilities, roads, streets, water and sewer maintenance activities and performs other duties essential to the maintenance of the City. Classifications

Maintenance Worker III: This is the senior level class in the maintenance series. The City of Menlo Park is seeking engineering professionals, with exceptional technical and project management skills, for Senior Civil Engineer positions in the Public Works Department (Department) Capital Improvement Program (CIP) Division. The Senior Engineer will lead capital improvement projects under the supervision of the City Engineer or Public Works Director. The CIP team delivers projects for City owned facilities including streets, buildings, storm and domestic water, and parks. The Senior Civil Engineer is responsible for executing CIP projects from planning through completion and managing assigned staff.

• 26 City-owned buildings/facilities and their grounds
• A fleet of over 250 vehicles and pieces of equipment
• 97 miles of streets
• Drinking water delivery for 16,000 customers
• Flood protection and stormwater management programs particularly along the San Francisco Bay, San Francisquito Creek and Atherton Channel
• 14 parks, 2 open spaces, 14 playgrounds, 2 dog parks, 9 sports fields, and 14 tennis/pickleball courts
• Efforts to preserve and expand the urban canopy, including 20,000 public trees
• Multimodal transportation services including 42 traffic signals, safe routes to schools and citywide shuttle programs. 

The department has nearly a $40 million operating budget supported by over 25 different special/dedicated funding sources for the varied programs and services provided to the community. In addition, the City has an approximate $100 million capital improvement program, in part due to a successful track record in pursuing grants from a variety of local, state and federal sources. ABOUT THE POSITION

Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator III

($25.51- $32.66 per hour)

PURPOSE: Under general supervision, assists in the operation and maintenance of a Wastewater Treatment Plant on an assigned shift.  Performs related responsibilities as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

In addition to being a full, advanced journey-level position, incumbents are expected to provide lead supervision over wastewater treatment plant maintenance staff.  Employees assigned to this class coordinate and perform the full range of skilled duties to operate, maintain, repair and modify the Wastewater Treatment Plant and the wastewater collection system.  

This position reports to the Utility Systems Supervisor and assists in determining equipment, personnel and material needs.  This position may act as the WWTP Supervisor (or as the Utility Systems Supervisor, if qualified) during periods when the appointed Utility Systems Supervisor is on vacation or absent from work for other reasons.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Assists in the operation of valves and other related controls to distribute flow through unit process and application of chlorine and chemicals to the wastewater.

2. Monitors control equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, blowers, sludge collectors, heat exchangers, sludge thickeners and other related process equipment.

3. Reads meters, gauges and other instrumentation.

4. Maintains a daily record of facility operation, samples collected and corrections to unit processes.

5. Adjusts or alters chemical treatment of the plant as necessary.

6. Collects samples for observation and analysis from unit processes.

7. Performs daily and weekly laboratory analysis as needed for process adjustments and performance indicators.

8. Performs preventative maintenance to equipment, such as routine service, lubrication and cleaning of process equipment and machinery.

9. Operated a wide variety of tools and equipment used in minor mechanical repair and operation of process equipment.

10. Assists in minor repairs to all process equipment as needed.

11. Performs building and ground maintenance, which may involve weed control, gardening and janitorial services.

12. Performs related duties as required.

What You’ll Do

The Public Works Maintenance Leadworker performs skilled work in the construction, maintenance, and repair of sewer infrastructure, road ways, sidewalks, and storm conveyance system. The Leadworker assigns and participates in the work of maintenance crews, operates power driven equipment, and performs related work as required.   This position is responsible for lead supervision of a sewer, street, storm or traffic safety maintenance field crew.
