The Position
The City of San Bruno Fire Department is offering a unique career opportunity to those who desire a challenge and wish to work in a dynamic urban setting. The City seeks a self-motivated Fire Inspector to ensure that the City’s fire inspection program provides an excellent level of service to the surrounding community. Under the general supervision of a Fire Battalion Chief / Fire Marshal, the Fire Inspector performs the full range of fire inspection duties including fire and life safety inspection, plan review, code enforcement activities, and assistance with fire investigations.
The Fire Inspector is a hard-working and dedicated individual with experience and ability to perform a full range of fire prevention duties, including inspecting residential, commercial and industrial units for compliance with safety laws and ordinances, as well as maintaining complete and accurate records of fire safety codes, regulations, ordinances, inspections, violations, and penalties.
In addition to the technical duties involved with fire inspection, the Fire Inspector will have opportunities to educate and enrich the San Bruno community by planning and conducting public education programs and outreach regarding fire prevention, make presentations to civic organizations and school groups, as well as observing fire drills in schools, convalescent homes, businesses, and other places within the City.
The Fire Inspector will also work cooperatively with internal City departments on inspections and projects, provide expert guidance and direct support for plan check reviews, including providing professional-level reviews, comments, and recommendations to ensure that work conforms to current fire code standards and established City policy and procedure.
This position upholds fire inspection best practices, serves as an integral team player and demonstrates flexibility, cooperation, and communication, adheres to labor and safety guidelines, ensures compliance with policy and procedures, respects the cultural and ethnic diversity of the community, represents the City with dignity, integrity, and the spirit of cooperation in all relations with staff and the public, and performs in a manner that upholds the values of the City.
In addition to one year of experience in fire and life safety prevention inspection or a related field (two years of firefighting experience may be substituted for the one year of fire and life safety experience experience), a special requirement to be 21 years of age or older (per Health and Safety Penal Code 830.37), and the successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will possess a California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector I and/or II certification and certification from the International Conference of Building Officials (ICBO) or International Code Council (ICC), and demonstrate a successful track record of:
- Upholding high standards of integrity, accountability, and professionalism in fire prevention and code enforcement activities.
- Communicating clearly and effectively with business owners, contractors, City staff, and the public.
- Working collaboratively as an integral member of the Fire Department team.
- Exercising sound judgment while managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.
- Promoting public safety through proactive education, compliance, and community engagement.
