The City of Dixon is excited to announce the recruitment for an Interim Public Works Director (Retired Annuitant) for a duration of 6-12 months. This interim appointment qualifies for full-time benefits; including CalPERS retirement and is a great opportunity for highly motivated individuals ready to expand and refine their Public Works career.

The Interim Public Works Director will play a critical leadership role during a period of elevated development activity and organizational transition. This position requires a hands-on leader who can maintain momentum on existing initiatives while advancing new priorities across Public Works, Engineering, and land development functions.

This is an exempt, at-will senior management position directly responsible to the City Manager.

The City of Berkeley is seeking a General Services Manager to join the Finance Department! In this role, you will act as the division head and will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the programs and activities of the General Services Division. You'll supervise staff, oversee procurement and mail services, and ensure compliance with City policies.

Responsibilities include oversight of a centralized Purchasing function. Working with departments, the Division identifies equipment, goods, and services that will meet the City’s needs and creates cost effective purchasing and maintenance agreements. The Division also issues and awards all non-construction bids and Request for Proposals, and opens all construction bids to obtain the best competitive pricing. The General Services Manager also works to enforce compliance of all City procurement and contracting policies, maintain the Purchasing information on the City’s website, and assure that customers and vendors have online access to needed information and forms.

EDUCATION
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college with major course work in accounting, business administration, information technology or public administration or a related field.

EXPERIENCE

The City of Berkeley invites you to apply for the position of Equipment Superintendent in the Public Works Department—a critical leadership role at the center of the City’s fleet strategy and sustainability goals. Working in close partnership with the Public Works Operations Manager, you will help shape the future of Berkeley’s diverse and highly visible municipal fleet.

The Equipment Maintenance Division includes 14 full-time technicians and two supervisors, and the Equipment Superintendent is directly accountable for ensuring safe, efficient, and fiscally responsible fleet operations. This role offers the opportunity to lead and innovate while managing two repair facilities and overseeing a fleet of more than 570 vehicles and equipment assets, including light-duty vehicles, on- and off-road heavy equipment, refuse trucks, generators, and emergency vehicles.

A key focus of this position is advancing the City’s fleet electrification and clean transportation initiatives, including navigating California’s Advanced Clean Fleets regulations and collaborating with Engineering to plan and build the required charging infrastructure. You will work closely with user departments—primarily Police, Fire, Parks, Public Works, and the Zero Waste Division—to ensure the right equipment is procured, maintained, and deployed, while providing clear and actionable reporting on fleet condition, utilization, and lifecycle costs.

Equivalent to graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a major in criminal justice, public administration, urban affairs, statistics, or a related field and at least two (2) years of professional experience in crime analysis or systems operations.

Experience in a law enforcement environment working with GIS, familiarity with National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) protocols, and a State Department of Justice Crime Analysis Certificate are desirable.

Must successfully complete a Police Department background investigation and evaluation, including a criminal history investigation. Must be able to travel to various locations within and outside the City of Berkeley to meet the program needs and to fulfill the job responsibilities. A little about Central County Fire Department:

The Central County Fire Department proudly serves the communities of Burlingame, Hillsborough, and Millbrae and its members come from different backgrounds to share the common goal of providing exceptional emergency/non-emergency services to members and visitors of our communities. Formed in April 2004, the Central County Fire Department (CCFD) provides all-risk fire protection, emergency medical and community risk reduction services to 70,000 residents and tens of thousands of visitors each year.

Our service area encompasses approximately 15 square miles, and our communities are a primary stopping point for San Francisco International Airport’s 53 million-plus passengers each year. Our jurisdiction has wildland urban interface areas and neighborhoods consisting of single-family homes, multi-residential buildings, retail and business districts, schools, hotels, a regional hospital, care facilities, as well as a large industrial area. Our two major highways, 101 and 280, and two commuter railways (BART and Caltrain) are vital transportation links between San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

We have seven strategically located and professionally staffed fire stations, in addition to an administrative headquarters and a training facility. Our daily staffing model consists of seven engine companies, one ladder truck, and one Battalion Chief, 24 hours a day, every day. We maintain a State of California Type I heavy rescue Urban Search & Rescue (USAR) unit that is cross staffed daily in addition to a Type 6 wildland unit. Many of our Special Operations trained personnel are members of California Urban Search and Rescue Task Force 3. The Department responds to approximately 9,000 calls for service annually.

Our Prevention Division manages several significant community risk reduction initiatives including vegetation and hazard abatement programs, plan reviews, comprehensive code enforcement activities, and fire investigations. They also produce and deliver numerous programs throughout the community.

Distinguishing Characteristics

The Principal Development Services Inspector classification is a single position classification allocated to the Development Services Division of the Department of Planning and Development.

The Principle Development Services Inspector is distinguished from the Senior Building Inspector and Supervising Construction Inspector in that the Principal Development Services Inspector is assigned continuing full supervisory responsibilities over the Senior Building Inspector and Supervising Construction Inspector, professional, technical and support staff; coordinates the activities of inspection operations across the Building, Land Development Engineering and Fire Marshal sections of the Development Services Division; whereas the Senior Building Inspector is responsible to supervise a phase of the inspection program and to perform the more difficult or more specialized inspections. The Supervising Construction Inspector is responsible for a major segment of a program area of construction projects and for supervising staff.

Position Duties

As part of the Engineering Services Division, Survey Section of the Public Works Department is responsible for delivering land surveying services on a variety of City projects including street widening/improvements, storm and sanitary facilities, library/community center/fire station sites, and airfield projects. These land surveying services include, but are not limited to the following: topography, property acquisition, construction staking, pavement marking layout, and monument preservation.

The Survey Section is currently recruiting to fill one (1) Instrument Person vacancy. An Instrument Person performs a variety of sub-professional surveying and engineering functions of moderate difficulty either on a survey crew in the field or in the Survey Section office.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

• Acts as instrument person on a survey party.
• Records field notes and prepares maps and sketches from survey data.
• Sets up, adjusts, and operates all types of survey instruments.
• Provides lead direction and training to other survey personnel.
• Uses modern, survey-grade Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
• Calculates grades and enters data into field books.
• Turns angles and extends horizontal line using a total station.
• Uses the level to obtain vertical control.
• Uses the level, total station, rod, targets to perform topographic surveying in order to describe the existing features of a piece of land in order that it may be reproduced as a plan map.
• Locates survey points by measurement, magnetometer and from maps of former surveys.
• Assist with transferring electronic field data to a PC workstation, processing and interpreting the data, and checking for errors.
• Assists with producing high-quality, computer-generated topography maps and tables using sophisticated engineering software.

This is the journey level class in a four class surveying series. This class differs from the next higher class of Survey Party Chief in that incumbents of the latter perform sub-professional surveying work and are usually responsible for completing only a segment of a surveying program or project.

Position and Duties

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services is recruiting for Part-Time, Unbenefited Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions in the Recreation Services Division (RS) for the Citywide Aquatics programming.

The Lifeguard classification is covered by the Minimum Wage Police and pay starts at $18.45 hourly.
The Instructor Lifeguard classification is covered by the Pay Floor Rate and pay starts at $30.48 hourly.

These positions may be required to work variable shifts between the hours of 6:00 AM – 8:00 PM, Monday – Saturday during the dates of June 15-August 8. Additionally, a MANDATORY training for both Lifeguard and Instructor Lifeguard positions will take place starting the week of June 8, from 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. These positions are part-time, unbenefited with a limit of less than 20 hours per week or less than 1,040 hours per year. There is no guarantee of hours or longevity. All programs adhere to Santa Clara County, Public Health guidelines to ensure the health and well-being of staff. Face coverings and Personal Protective Equipment are provided. Staff may assist with daily health screenings, cleaning, and sanitization in City programs following the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. 

Note: Candidates are not required to possess the Lifeguard Training certificate at the time of completing the application or to interview for the position. If selected for the position of Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will offer Lifeguard Training certification classes, if needed. If selected for the position of Instructor Lifeguard, the Citywide Aquatics program will be offering Lifeguard Training and American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor's (WSI) certification classes, if needed. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training certification and the American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor certification age requirement are at least 15 years old.

If selected to move forward in the conditional offer process, the Lifeguard certification pre course swimming skills test that consists of the following:
•a 300-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke.
•a 2-minute tread using legs only
•the ability to retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, to the surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds. 

Lifeguard:
Lifeguards supervise the conduct of swimmers to maintain safety in the swimming pool. Lifeguards also enforce swimming pool rules and may participate in swim instruction programs; observe swimmers in swimming pools; provide warnings to those who violate the safety rules of the pool and expelling them, if necessary, because of willful disobedience of the rules; rescues swimmers who are in distress; and administers artificial respiration when necessary, according to the prescribed method. Lifeguards may also train and direct the work of lower-level workers as assigned and participate in pool maintenance. Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard Training’s Authorization Certificate is REQUIRED for the position of Lifeguard. 

Instructor Lifeguard:
In addition to the duties identified for Lifeguards, Instructor Lifeguards also organize and conduct swimming instruction classes for beginners, intermediate, or advanced swimmers at a swimming pool. Duties will include teaching swimming to children, adult individuals, and groups. Instructor Lifeguards may officiate at competitive swim meets. Instructor Lifeguards must also be able to instruct in the techniques of swimming and lifesaving. Possession of a current American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Authorization Certificate (WSI) is REQUIRED for the position of Instructor Lifeguard.
