Job Announcement: Tree Care Specialist

The Public Works Department for the City of Carmel-by-the-Sea seeks a highly-motivated, service-oriented team member for the full-time role of Tree Care Specialist. The selected candidate will perform routine and semi-skilled tree care duties including planting, watering, trimming, pruning, and removing trees and stumps in addition to completing a variety of forestry, parks, and beach maintenance duties.

Essential Functions: 

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Climb, trim, and prune trees, plants, and shrubbery to promote health, correct damage of disease, improve appearance, provide a safer environment, and/or to provide clearance of streets, sidewalks, signs, and lights.
• Remove fallen trees, dead limbs, and other debris resulting from storm damage and other conditions.
• Diagnose and treat tree insect and disease problems.
• Install, inspect, and maintain tree cables and braces.
• Inspect for safety, operate, and maintain forestry equipment including climbing belts, spurs, flip lines, ropes, hand saws, power saws, boom lift truck, chipper, pruners, loppers, and related equipment.
• Use high ranger vehicle to access upper tree canopies.
• Determine limbs to be removed; rig ropes in trees and determine placement of ropes for easiest and safest removal of limbs; check location of power lines, personnel, equipment, pedestrians, and traffic before cutting limbs.
• Grind and remove stumps.
• Participate in the selection of equipment and plant materials needed for work assignments.
• Inspect citizen requests for service to determine urgency and needed maintenance, evaluate work being performed, and respond to questions or complaints from the public.
• Advise public concerning plant or tree questions on private property including plant identifica­tion, insect and disease problems, and pruning, trimming, and care techniques.
• Inspect other City grounds including parks, trails, street trees, landscaped median islands, playground equipment, park signs, and barrier rails; perform corrective safety and other actions.
• Install and remove holiday lights and decorations.
• Plant trees, shrubs, and flowers; water and fertilize in accordance with standard procedures.
• Apply herbicides, pesticides, growth regulators and fertilizers; conduct spraying tasks involving insecticides.
• Perform grounds maintenance or other public maintenance work when not assigned to tree trimming duties.
• Perform other job-related duties and responsibilities as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:

• One year of work experience involving tree maintenance including tree trimming and climbing experience.
• Completion of twelfth grade supplemented by specialized training in tree care or landscape maintenance. 
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license and a Pesticide Applicator license.

Please note: In terms of the work schedule for this position, it will normally be 40 hours, Monday – Friday each week with the daily work hours determined by the supervisor. However, the City will maintain the flexibility to schedule weekend work in lieu of, or in addition to, the normal Monday – Friday schedule as operational needs dictate.

The County of Yuba is currently recruiting for a Parks and Landscape Coordinator in the Community Development and Services Agency. This experienced technical and administrative support class oversees and coordinates the parks and landscape program for the Community Development and Services Agency (CDSA); provides technical assistance, review and evaluation for program operations; oversees the administration of contracts, leases and agreements; oversees operation of County operated campgrounds; oversees park impact fee collection and performs related work as assigned. This position may require lead direction of  a small group of subordinate staff on a project or day to day basis, depending on the assignment. This position reports directly to the Public Works Project Manager on all critical functions related to the parks and landscape program.

Working Conditions: Residential, commercial, or industrial properties, parks and campgrounds or other facilities under inspection and potentially under construction. Work with exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals, uneven footing, inclement weather, temperature extremes or other potentially dangerous conditions. May require work with exposure to potential hazards at various construction sites.  

Examples of Duties:

 Plans and oversees the maintenance, operation and improvement of work for County parks, campgrounds and roadside landscape corridors, including specific lighting and landscaping districts; makes periodic inspections to ensure proper performance of maintenance activities.
 

Responds to, investigates and resolves complaints related to assigned areas.
 

Administers County’s Volunteer Campground Caretaker Program; solicits volunteers, administers screening process including acceptance and termination, and oversees the volunteers in their roles as campground caretakers.

This position requires a demonstrated competency and increasing independence, knowledge, and ability in performing routine and special assignments in the Parks Maintenance Division.

This is a part-time position assigned to parks maintenance, which includes weekend rotation in parks and assistance to other departments in emergency and non-routine situations. Maintenance Worker is an entry-level position and receives general supervision from Parks Maintenance Supervisors and ongoing training on a wide variety of equipment, operational rules, guidelines, procedures and methods.

IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

Performs mowing, weeding, trimming, pruning, cultivating, fertilizing, pest control, planting and cleaning of lawns, trees, plants, and parks; removes and disposes of trash and litter; maintains park and maintenance equipment, buildings and facilities; maintains irrigation systems; performs construction and demolition of park facilities, drainage, low-voltage electrical and irrigation systems for new, expanded and renovated park facilities as part of capital improvement projects; performs minor plumbing or building repair duties; supervises and coordinates Sheriff’s Work Program personnel; operates small trucks, dump trucks, ride-on and walk-behind mowing equipment; may be required to operate heavy equipment; utilizes a wide variety of construction tools and mechanical equipment; may be required to interact with customers on site or when requested; may be required to utilize department or City-wide software applications to maintain records or perform various duties. Involves significant time walking, stooping, bending, squatting, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating hand and power tools, equipment, and vehicles on a daily basis. Considerable time spent working outdoors in occasional extreme heat and cold; applying pesticides and chemicals to plants, lawns, shrubs and trees.

JOB-RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: Standard and job-specific methods, materials, terminology and safe work practices of maintenance, construction, and gardening/landscape work; maintenance equipment and tools.

Skill in:  Physical stamina and strength to operate a variety of tools and equipment, perform physical tasks for long periods of time, and ability to lift light and heavy loads (20-90 lbs); physical flexibility to move objects and operate equipment; demonstrate ability to safely operate and drive vehicles and equipment.

The Position

The Administrative Assistant is an entry-level position within the division tasked with providing key support to full-time staff through the following types of assignments:

• A current typing certificate, within the last 12 months, demonstrating a minimum net proficiency of 30 wpm, must be submitted along with the application. Certificates must be provided by a recognized source, i.e. employment service, business school, etc. Employees of Suisun City who are currently working in a position that requires a minimum net typing speed of 40 wpm are exempt from obtaining a typing certificate.

The Town of Portola Valley is seeking two motivated planning professionals to join the team.
