DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:

Maintenance Worker I (Part time)

This is the entry level class in the maintenance worker series. Positions in this class normally perform a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled maintenance tasks. Although trucks and other motorized equipment may be operated by a Maintenance Worker I, the equipment is used on a training basis or for tasks which are repetitious in nature. Under this training concept, positions assigned to the class of Maintenance Worker II which become vacant may reasonably be filled at the Maintenance Worker I level, with the understanding that reassignment to the Maintenance Worker II class may be expected following successful job performance and personal development.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Perform a variety of maintenance work in the construction, maintenance and repair of streets, parks, sewers, storm drains, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, parking meters and other public facilities.

• Break out old concrete work such as curbs, sidewalks, and gutters.

• Operate power mowers, edgers, sewer rodders, and other hand-operated and power tools in the performance of maintenance and repair activities.
• Drive vehicles as required and assist in routine care and upkeep of such vehicles.
• Assist in moving and installing park and recreational equipment.
• Install, maintain, and repair sewer system mains, sprinkler systems, pipes and facilities.
• Inspect, maintain, and repair parking meter devices.

THE POSITION

The Human Resources Department is accepting applications for the Regular and Full-time position of Building Maintenance Worker II in the Public Works Department.  The normal work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 –5 pm; a flex schedule may be available.

DEFINITION

To perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the maintenance and repair of City buildings, mechanical equipment, and related facilities.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey level class in the Building Maintenance Worker series and is distinguished by the ability to perform the full range of duties assigned with only occasional instruction or assistance as unusual or unique situations arise.  Positions in this class are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from the I level.

This class is distinguished from the Senior Building Maintenance Worker in that the latter performs advanced journey level work and provides technical and functional supervision to assigned staff.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives general supervision from the Building Maintenance Supervisor and receives technical and functional supervision from the Senior Building Maintenance Worker.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES - Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Perform semi-skilled and skilled building maintenance work involving carpentry, painting, plumbing, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) tasks in the repair and maintenance of City buildings, equipment, and facilities.
• Maintain and repair mechanical systems such as boilers and air conditioners and other air cooling systems; maintain and repair lighting systems in buildings and other city facilities, including parking lots.
• Install, repair, and troubleshoot electrical systems; set-up, test, and maintain burglar and fire alarm systems; repair and maintain a variety of power generators and power compressors.
• Install, repair, and maintain plumbing fixtures/equipment including toilets, pumps, and faucets.
• Install and modify modular furniture configurations, including electric supply; install, repair, and paint/stucco sheetrock.
• Inspect and repair doors, locks, windows, floors, lockers, gates, roofs/down spouts/gutters, and ceilings; inspect various maintenance projects; build forms and mix/pour concrete.
• Work collaboratively with outside vendors and contractors in identifying unusual problems and/or maintaining and repairing City facilities and buildings.
• Report potential safety problems related to City facilities, clean up spills and unsafe conditions as identified; lock and unlock doors of City facilities.
• Repair and maintain ice machines, high pressure wash systems and pumps, and a variety of stoves, refrigerators, dishwashers, laundry washers/dryers and related small appliances.
• Perform set up for events and classes including stage and podium, audio-visual and public address systems, lighting, generators and related equipment.
• Evaluate job needs; purchase parts and supplies if not available in Central Stores.
• Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public using principles of good customer service.
• Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

• General methods and practices used in a variety of building trades, such as carpentry, general construction, electric, plumbing, painting, and heating/air conditioning systems.
• Tools and equipment used in a variety of building construction and maintenance trades; use and purpose of general construction tools and equipment.
• Basic computer skills related to data entry/retrieval.
• Basic principles and practices of record keeping.
• Principles and practices used in the performance of a variety of skilled building trades work, involving carpentry, general construction, electrical, plumbing, painting, and heating/air conditioning systems.

Ability to:

• Learn to perform semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of City facilities, equipment, and related facilities.
• On a continuous basis, know and understand operations, and observe safety rules; intermittently analyze problem equipment; identify and locate equipment; interpret work orders; remember equipment location; and explain jobs to others.

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Experience:

• Two years of increasingly responsible experience performing building maintenance and repair work similar to that of a Building Maintenance Worker I with the City of Roseville working in operations and maintenance of a commercial or institutional facility performing building maintenance work such as electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing, and heating/ventilation/air conditioning (HVAC) tasks.

Training:

• Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade GED, or higher level degree; course work or training in one or more of the building trades is highly desirable.

License or Certificate

• Possession of a valid California driver’s license by date of appointment.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under direct supervision of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs a variety of labor and skilled work in the maintenance of streets, parks, street medians, storm drains and related facilities; performs related work as required.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
The Maintenance Worker I is an entry level class in the maintenance series.  This class requires individuals with an aptitude for street and park maintenance work, good physical condition, and a willingness to learn with the opportunity to obtain skills in a variety of maintenance areas.  This class is distinguished from the Maintenance Worker II class in that the Maintenance Worker II is the journey level class of this series who are fully competent to independently perform a number of assigned tasks skillfully and safely, operate equipment, vehicles and power tools as a regular responsibility, and serve as a lead on work projects and crews.

The Maintenance Worker II is a journey level class of this series. Incumbents are competent to independently perform a number of assigned tasks skillfully and safely.The operation of equipment, vehicles and power tools is a regular responsibility of this class, and provide limited lead responsibilities for small crews as required. This class is distinguished from the Senior Maintenance Worker class in that the Senior Maintenance Worker class has supervisory skills and provides day-to-day lead responsibilities and training to other Maintenance staff, directs field work through a crew leader, and performs the most complex work assignments.

Under general direction, this positions plans, coordinates, and directs the cleaning, service maintenance, repair, and overhaul of District vehicles for an assigned operating division. • Consults with representatives of vehicle and parts manufacturers in regard to District performance requirements, vehicle and equipment wear, failure trends, and other issues.
• Enforces Cal/OSHA laws and District safety rules and regulations.Submits industrial injury reports following OSHA guidelines.
• Initiates and signs all department turn-around documents, including job vacancies and job postings. Ensures the confidentiality and security of all division personnel records.
• Performs periodic personal inspection tours of all division maintenance facilities, including individual shops and buses, during on-duty hours.
• Initiates and responds to correspondence, telephone calls, and emails.
• May be required to temporarily replace or act in the position of the senior District staff member to whom this position normally reports, and may be required to perform some or all the senior staff members representative functions in these situations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Business Administration, Management, or a similar field.

Experience: Six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in heavy duty-coach maintenance, at least three (3) years of which involved supervisory and/or management level experience and responsibilities equivalent to an AC Transit Senior Maintenance Supervisor.

Cadet Firefighter #2693

The Cadet Firefighter Program is designed to allow students an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge of fire department operations.  Fire Department Cadets spend a minimum of 48 hours per month at the firehouse, participating in calls for service, station duties, and training.  Cadets will also be expected to attend department-sponsored community functions outside of their 48-hour monthly commitment.  Though the goal is to immerse the cadet into all aspects of fire department life, they are not allowed to participate in situations deemed Immediately Dangerous to Life and Health (IDLH).

Minimum Requirements

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:

• High school diploma or GED, or completion of a job or technical training program in general construction, street maintenance, grounds keeping, building trades, or a closely related field; and

• Four years of directly-related work experience; and

• Must be able to work occasional nights and weekends; and

• Must possess a valid California Class C Driver's License and a satisfactory driving record; and

• Must possess knowledge of the basic principles, methods, materials, tools, terminology, techniques, safe work practices, and problems associated with the maintenance of streets, sewers, storm drains, grounds, landscaping, buildings, vehicles and equipment. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

The Maintenance Worker II may be exposed at times to raw sewage and associated waste matter.  In the event the State of California issues regulations requiring technical certification of sewer maintenance workers, employees in this classification will be required to obtain and maintain the technical certification required by the State.

ABOUT THE POSITION
 
The City of Gilroy is recruiting for part time Maintenance Worker Assistant positions. The current vacancies are in the Parks/Landscape and Streets/Waste Water/Trees Sections of the Public Works Operations Division. However the position can be later assigned to any of the sections (Water, Streets/Waste Water/Trees or Parks and Landscape) within the Public Works Department, Operations Division.
 
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
 
Under direct supervision of a Senior Maintenance Worker and under the guidance of a Maintenance Worker I/II, perform work in one of the three following sections as assigned: Water, Streets/Waste Water/Trees, and/or Parks and Landscape. Employees in this job classification may rotate/transfer between the sections noted above as determined by the City. Employees in this job classification are in a learning mode and initially will receive direct supervision. As the employee learns the job, less direct supervision may be required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

Water Section:

• Assist in the performance of general maintenance work on the water system, as well as repairs and replacement of water mains, water services, fire hydrants and water meters.
• Assist in the performance of building maintenance on water system facilities.
• Learn and assist in the taking of water quality samples per State of California regulations.
• Learn and assist in the reading of water meters.
• May assist in the performance of backflow tests on City-owned backflow assemblies.
• May assist in the performance of cross-connection surveys on City and private premises.

Parks and Landscape Section:

• Assist in the performance of landscape and ground maintenance around public buildings, recreation facilities, rights-of-way, and open areas.
• Assist in the performance of irrigation maintenance and repairs as necessary.
• Remove garbage and litter from assigned facilities.
• Clean and maintain park buildings and restrooms.
• Assist in park development when required.

• Assist in the performance or coordination of necessary plumbing, carpentry, painting, and related building maintenance and vandalism repair as assigned.
• Assist the Recreation Division, other City departments, allied agencies, and the public to coordinate maintenance schedules with the use of assigned facilities.
• Assist in the performance of work to support the Recreation Division such as reservations, ball field preparation and clean-up, and special event preparation and clean up.
• Advise a supervisor and/or take appropriate action when laws, regulations, and policies pertaining to public use of the parks and municipal facilities are not being followed.
• May be assigned to work in different facilities throughout the City.
• May assist in the requisition, procurement, and storage of janitorial supplies.
• May perform support services during major functions that occur in City facilities.

Streets/Waste Water/Trees Section:

• Assist in the performance of general maintenance, cleaning and repair work involved in streets, sewers, trees, and storm drains.
• May assist in building maintenance as assigned.

All Sections:

• Learn how to operate and provide daily maintenance on equipment, vehicles, and hand and power tools as assigned.
• Participate in related training programs.
• Assist in the preparation and maintenance of accurate records and reports.
• Assist in investigating service requests and complaints.
• Learn and conduct inspections as assigned.
• Perform disaster relief work as required.
• Perform related work as necessary and required.

REQUIREMENTS, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Minimum twelfth grade education or a G.E.D.
2. Six months of construction, maintenance, or landscape experience or training is qualifying.  Prior work for a public agency or other similar service industry desired, but not required.
3. Subject to recall on a scheduled and/or emergency basis.  May be assigned to work varied shifts, holidays, or weekends to meet the needs of the City.
4. Possess and maintain a valid California Driver License (Class C) and a safe driving record necessary to operate assigned vehicle(s).
5. Employee is encouraged to obtain a Class A Driver License. If the employee obtains and wishes to use his/her Class A Driver License, the employee must participate in the Department of Transportation Drug and Alcohol testing program, which includes submission to random drug and alcohol testing.
6. Pass a post-offer medical examination, which includes a drug test.
7. Pass a Department of Justice criminal record check for employment as well as a background/reference check.
8. Prefer non-tobacco user.

Fire Cadet

The City of San Bruno Fire Department offers an exciting opportunity to serve as a Fire Cadet for the upcoming 2019 calendar year.  Our one-year Fire Cadet program is an unpaid, volunteer work experience program that offers hands-on training, and introductory knowledge of firefighting skills, fire service tools and equipment.  Cadets respond to emergency calls, render Basic Life Support, and participate in training and in the daily station duties. 

Cadets must be willing to commit to 24-hour shifts, two to four times per month.  The cadet program is one year in length.  Upon completion, this one year program meets the manipulative training and experience requirements in obtaining a California State Fire Marshall’s Office State Firefighter I certification.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

· State of California EMT or National Registry EMT certification

· Possession of a valid driver’s license and a driving record with minimal violations

· Possession of a Firefighter I Academy certification (or proof of “student in good standing” letter signed by an Academy Instructor if currently enrolled)

· 18 years of age at the time of application
