THE OPPORTUNITY

The City of Pacifica is a beautiful coastal community, just south of San Francisco with an exciting opportunity for customer service orientated individuals to join our team as a Recreation Leader within our Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department. 

The Parks, Beaches and Recreation Department within the City of Pacifica works closely with the community providing programming to youth, seniors and all citizens.  We strive to foster a collaborative and collegial atmosphere among staff while providing high quality programs, activities and events to the community and neighborhoods. We take pride in offering excellent community service while remaining adaptable and responsive to our residents' needs and expectations. The City provides structured recreational activities and educational opportunities for up to 60 middle school students during the school year at two sites, monthly special events, and summer camp at three sites. 

Currently, we have openings for our morning, weekday shifts. However, Recreation Leaders often work in a variety of programs and shifts through out the week.

SALARY

Recreation Leader I/II: $13.00 - $16.00 per hour

Recreation Leader III/IV: $16.00 - $19.00 per hour

Recreation Leader V: $19.00 - $21.00 per hour

This is a part-time, at-will, non-benefited position. Hours are limited to less than 1,000 hours per year.

The City of Redwood City Invites Applications for:

Youth Development Leader

ABOUT THE POSITION

In working for the Distance Learning Program, individuals will have the opportunity to be a part of a team of dedicated development leaders who are passionate about the community and inspiring students to reach their full potential.

The City of Redwood City is working with schools to provide youth with opportunities to excel in school and participate in recreation activities. The City is looking for youth development leaders to help support distance learning program in planning, organizing and conducting structured academic support, recreation enrichment activities in a variety of settings selected by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. Youth Development leaders typically assist in conducting academic support and academic enrichment recreation activities, as well as assisting with two other components of the after-school program, life skills and health awareness. This position will report directly to the Recreation and Community Services Program Coordinator and will work approximately 20-28 hours per week, Monday - Friday during the school year (August 2020 to June 2021 depending on site assignment). The distance learning programs will be closed all school holidays and district-wide teacher training days.

Typical duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Provide structure academic support, plan, organize and conduct recreation enrichment activities for youth.
• Supervise recreation participants, insuring that proper safety precautions are observed in assigned activities.
• Maintain and care for equipment; prepare activity calendars, bulletin boards, lesson plans and/or coaching strategies as appropriate to help promote and plan activities effectively.
• Assist in organizing, promoting, directing and staffing; report to supervisors orally and in writing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 18 years of age; any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Education & Experience

• Completion of 48 units of college or pass Instructional Aid Test
• Completion of AA degree or Early Childhood Education certificate is highly preferred
• A passion to work with youth
• Ability to work effectively and develop a team environment
• Some experience in a recreation setting preferred but not required.

Licenses & Certificates

• The incumbent may be required to travel between various locations during their scheduled work shift.
• Possession of a valid California Driver License with a satisfactory driving record is required.

Knowledge of:

• Leadership Techniques.
• Basic Math and English
• Specialized recreation activities.

Ability to:

• Assist students in homework and provide academic support
• Plan, organize and conduct a wide variety of recreation activities for all age groups and genders.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Depending on area of assignment, previous knowledge of and experience participating in the activity and/or sport is desirable.

Licenses: Depending on area of assignment, a valid, Class C California Driver’s license may be required. Possession of or ability to obtain a first aid certificate. Possession of or ability to obtain a CPR certification. Completion of Mandated Reporter Training Certification may be required.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision the aide assists in planning, organizing, and implementing preschool programming for children ages 3-5 years old. Program hours are M-F PM 8:30am – 1:00pm and/or MWF 8:30am - 1:00pm. Approximately 15 – 30 hours a week. Substitute and floating positions also available 8:30am - 1:00pm.

DEFINITION: Under general supervision, the Field Monitor provides operational support and supervision of Mill Valley parks, outdoor fields, offsite facilities, and occasionally the Mill Valley Community Center. Responsibilities will include but will not be limited to patrol and observation of outdoor facilities, ensuring compliance with facility regulations and use guidelines, general customer service, light office tasks, and the performance of other related work as required. This is a part-time, year-round position.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Monitor user activities in department facilities and enforce all rules, regulations, and safety principles.
• Patrol field, park and offsite facilities to monitor rental schedules and permitted use.
• Act as a liaison to the outdoor recreational community for the Recreation Department.
• Provide quality customer service and information for all Department facilities, classes, programs, and events.
• Maintain appearance and overall environment of facilities by completing daily tasks and cleaning as needed.
• Occasionally assist with the coordination and execution of Department-sponsored outdoor events or classes.
• Maintain records and reports as required.
• Enforce all rules, regulations and safety principals.
• Willingness and ability to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays.
• Ability to take the lead in completing assignments when working with a partner or on a team.
• Respond professionally to emergencies, provide care as indicated under the scope of training.
• Deal tactfully and courteously with the public and build positive relationships with other staff.
• Actively attend and participate in required staff training.
• Reads and follows diagrams and instruction written in English.
• Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
• Perform related duties as required.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS:
Candidates receiving a conditional job offer must pass a pre-placement fingerprint review. The employee must satisfactorily complete an evaluatory period before obtaining regular status. Candidates must possess a current CPR/AED and First Aid certificate and be comfortable calling 911 in an emergency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

• Set up and take down tables, chairs, audio-visual equipment, and other related material and equipment.
• Greet public and provide general information for all Recreation department classes, programs, and events.
• Daily janitorial/maintenance duties such as routine and special cleaning of restrooms, community center rooms (i.e. wipe counters, vacuum floors, sweep walkways, empty trash receptacles, replace paper products and litter pick-up).
• Monitors guest activities in the community center and enforce all rules, regulations and safety principals.
