The Custodian works under minimal supervision and incumbents are expected to perform the full realm of custodial duties, which include a variety of facility cleaning procedures and techniques.

The work schedule will be based on the needs of the department; working no more than 28 hours per week, not to exceed 999 hours in a fiscal year (July 1 thru June 30).  The hours will be from 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM Sunday through Thursday. You may be asked to work any combination of days within that work week. This is a temporary at-will position and does not offer benefits. Hourly rate is determined based on experience.

SUMMARY

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives supervision from supervisory staff and direction from higher-level staff.  Exercises direction over lower-level staff.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the journey-level classification in the Facility Attendant series; incumbents are responsible for providing custodial and operational support to facilities, events, classes, and programs.  Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise judgment and initiative.  Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.  This classification is distinguished from the Senior Facility Attendant in that the latter is responsible for providing custodial and operational support in a lead capacity when assigned.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.

1. Performs custodial duties at assigned facilities, including, but not limited to, cleaning, sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, waxing, stripping, and polishing floors; cleaning furniture, woodwork, fixtures, equipment, supplies, doors, windows, walls, walkways, driveways, and facility grounds; disposing of trash. 
2. Provides operational support for events, classes, and programs, including, but not limited to, set-up and tear-down of tables, chairs, equipment, and supplies.
3. Inspects facilities and equipment, reports issues in a timely manner to appropriate higher-level staff; performs minor facility maintenance.
4. Monitors and enforces rules, policies, and procedures.
5. Maintains logs and records of activities.
6. Receives and responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from patrons; determines issues and resolves or refers to higher-level staff as appropriate.
7. Assists with opening, closing, and securing facilities in compliance with policies and procedures.
8. Participates in required training sessions, including safety drills and other emergency procedures; performs all work in a safe manner in accordance with policies and procedures.
9. Assists with District special events as needed.
10. Performs related duties as assigned.

 
ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS
Incumbents work in both indoor and outdoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels, wet and slippery conditions, chemicals, mechanical and/or electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.  May work in controlled temperature conditions, cold and hot temperatures, or inclement weather conditions.  Incumbents will interact with individuals in interpreting and enforcing rules, policies, and procedures.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Incumbents may be assigned an irregular work schedule, including weekends, early mornings, evenings, and holidays.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess:  mobility, strength, and stamina to perform physical work for extended periods of time; to operate a wide variety of cleaning tools and equipment, and to operate a motor vehicle; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  Finger dexterity needed to operate tools and equipment.  Work activities may require standing, walking on uneven and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties.  Incumbents must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 50 pounds or heavier weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED is desirable.
• Experience in custodial and facility operations is desirable.
   

Knowledge of:

• Principles and practices of custodial and facility operations.
• Safety practices and equipment related to the work.
• Modern office practices, methods, computer equipment, and applications related to the work.
• Principles and practices of customer service, techniques for providing a high level of customer service.

 
Ability to:

• Use, operate, and maintain a variety of custodial, audio-visual, and operational equipment.
• Perform minor maintenance duties.
• Follow District policies and procedures related to assigned duties.
• Maintain facilities and equipment in a clean, safe, and secure manner.

POSITION INFORMATION

The LARPD Senior Services Venture Trips department is recruiting a part-time Recreation Leader II - Van Driver to transport participants on local or regional day trips, as well as occasional overnight trips. The qualified candidate will become part of a team of staff that programs, coordinates and executes social destination opportunities for the age 50+ local population. The incumbent will assist with office coverage, customer service, and trip escorts.

Typical duties include:

• Drives a 14 passenger van or other suitable vehicle transporting seniors and persons with disabilities.
• Maintains accurate trip records.
• Provides assistance to passengers, as necessary, to include carrying, loading or unloading passenger's packages, mobility equipment and other belongings.
• Collects tickets.   
• Answers telephones, provides some assistance to office staff.
• Administers first aid, if necessary.
• Performs routine safety check of vehicles; notes and reports safety or mechanical problems.

Requirement: Must possess or be willing to obtain a Class B drivers license within 3 months of hire date.\

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts and monitors recreational program activities within one or more assigned program areas; performs tasks in accordance with rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.

3. Monitors and enforces policies and procedures with respect to participant safety.
4. Inspects program areas and equipment and recommends maintenance and repair as needed.
5. Maintains records of participation and collects participant fees.

7. Transports, issues, receives, and controls the use of recreational equipment and supplies; monitors equipment inventories and recommends procurement of items as needed.

Must possess mobility to perform medium physical work; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen, and to operate a vehicle to transport materials and equipment to various sites and offices; hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.  The classification supports indoor and outdoor recreation programs requiring frequent walking, running, conducting exercises, and related physical activities.  Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard, calculator, or tools and equipment used in assigned program area.  Program activities may require sitting, standing, walking on level and slippery surfaces, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, stooping, squatting, crouching, grasping, and making repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; the ability to lift, carry, and push tools, equipment, and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds or higher weights with assistance and/or the use of proper equipment.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED is desirable.
• One year of relevant recreation program support experience.

 
Knowledge of:

• Recreation program services, operations, and activities.
• Relevant laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Proper care and use of recreation equipment, materials, and supplies.
• Principles and practices for providing high level of customer service.
• Principles and practices of recordkeeping.

TRANSPORTATION SPECIALIST

(Senior Citizen Van Driver)

$14.64 - $17.80/hr., Part-time, No Benefits

DEFINITION:  Under supervision, drives the City’s 7-15 passenger van(s) and provides responsible, safe transport for senior citizens and the physically disabled.  Schedule may include evenings, holidays and weekends; work schedule will not exceed 28 hours per week.

LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:  All applicants MUST attach proof of Class B Driver’s License with passenger endorsement at the time you submit your employment application.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:  The employee must have the ability to:

• Transport seniors and disabled community members to and from appointments.
• Have the ability to operate a wheelchair lift including correctly loading the passenger onto the wheelchair lift and effectively securing the individual to the vehicle using the appropriate tie downs; assist passengers entering and exiting the vehicle; keep daily records and logs for attendance, mileage and maintenance concerns.
• Complete a thorough pre-trip and post trip inspection of the transportation vehicle on a daily basis.
• Maintain a punctual schedule of picking up seniors for their appointments to ensure a high quality of service.
• Maintain vans, including weekly wash, motor pool inspection, weekly inventory of emergency supplies, and securing the vehicles in the City yard at the end of the night; Contact immediate supervisor and motor pool supervisors when mechanical failures arise.
• Ensure the safety of the community including passengers and personal care attendants as well as other drivers and pedestrians throughout the City.
• Ensure all passengers are safely seat belted in and that safety precautions are adhered to at all times.
• Answer phones and interact with the public in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
• Navigate the City of Fontana efficiently including adhering to speed limits and follow all traffic laws.
• Follow appropriate cash handling procedures including writing out a receipt for all customers that pay for a ride at their pick up time; Complete a daily transportation log which includes establishing the pickup times for the route’s passengers.
• Double check the day’s schedule and follow up with the transportation office to ensure that all passengers have returned home safely either through the senior services transportation vehicles or on their own accord.
• Operate a computer and related software.
• Establish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
• Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
• Perform any other tasks or functions deemed necessary to the daily operations of the employer.

EXPERIENCE: Successful candidate will have a valid Class B California Driver’s License with passenger endorsement, a good driving record, and some bus/van driving experience. 

WORKING CONDITIONS:  This position requires prolonged sitting, reaching, twisting, turning, grasping, making repetitive hand movements and occasional walking on level, unleveled, and slippery surfaces, bending/stooping, and crouching in the performance of daily duties.  May be required to lift, carry and/or push object weighing 10 pounds or more.  May work in all weather conditions and be subject to vibrations when holding onto steering wheel, work around moving traffic and often works with constant interruptions.  The employee must have good vision and hearing abilities.
